@chuckmorris9 Hi! As long as you don't just use a plain sand, then a regular dirt will do just fine. I do recommend on adding some compost dirt into your mix for optimal growth.
I use the old clear plastic salad greens containers and place my seed in there in seed starter soil. Now I have about 20 avocado plants. It does take months in a sunny window when you use soil.
I just read your answer to my cutting question. Since I have about 5 plants growing....I think I will cut one and see what happens. But thanks for replying anyway!!
I didn't start my seed in soil. I planted the seed in soil after the roots took over the cup! I was just wondering if it's okay to cover the whole seed. I see in some other pictures that their seeds are only half covered. My real question now is.....if I cut off the top...do you think it will branch out? I'd hate to cut anything after coming this far.
@PaTudie Truthfully, I haven't started any avocado seeds directly into the soil. I wouldn't really know by experience if it would work, but I have heard that it will still grow. :)
I have grown Pinkerton & Fuerte from seed in water & transplanted them into pots. Now I am waiting for them to grow pencil thick stems so that I can graft fruiting scions on them. I read DamarisStyles state that small root growth is visible at the top! I hope the seed is not placed upside down. The root should emerge at the bottom in the submerged portion underwater.
Your baby avocado's look really healthy. Mine have roots but they are no where near as healthy as yours. I peeled more of the skin off as I think you advised, and a little root is starting to grow from the top, but I just don't know whether to keep going or start again? I've had them on the window sil since October! :o(
@DamarisStyles I recommend you keep it. :) Just grow another seed along side. They really respond very well to a lot of sunlight, but don't put it where it's getting direct sunlight. The best place to start it is near a window that get's the most daylight. Good luck!
Hi, I haven't completely peeled the skin off and actually looking at your photo perhaps I should to this. They are in the water, as yours are. It might be coz they're on the windowsil and I'm in England so maybe it's a little cold for them? But I will definitely peel them completely and let you know how it goes. :o)

I've got 11 seeds on the go. It's been about 6 weeks now one is definitely growing a root but no sign of cracking at all and another is showing a little root, but ALL of them have mold on them. What am I doing wrong? :o)
@DamarisStyles Did you peel the skin off the seeds? I tried the same thing, had some with the skin on them and they molded. Also make sure your seed is 1/2 - 3/4 in the water. they love water. Show me a picture, maybe I can see more and help you out more.
@4GreenEarth2 Thanks! I'm noticing a big difference between fully ripened avocados to still hard, not ripened avocados and their seeds. It seems that avocado fruits that are fully ripe (the skin is turning brown) seems to affect the seeds inside by it slightly cracked already. Not sure if it works the same up north.
@MyInspiredCreation I'm in zone 5 in the western states - pretty cold right now. But I am going to see if I can grow a couple of avacado trees from seed. Just waiting for the fruit to ripen. I also started a mango with one on the way & my pineapple is doing great indoors. So, we will see. Praxis55712 is in southwestern MN - he is growing all sorts of plants indoors - cocoa trees, pineapples, mangos!. check his videos! Thanks for posting this video! Sure helps!
One of my avocado plant just stopes growing and the bud turned brown. But has a strong root system do you think trans planting it would help? Oh and it split in half today.
@The5KidRock Where do you have it, indoors/outdoors? And what split in half, the seed or the plant? If the root system is strong, and showing new sets of roots (white color) then the watering is fine. It might have to do with the amount of light. These are tropical trees so they do need sunlight. Putting it by a window would be very beneficial. If the trunk/branch/stem is turning brown, it's normal. Just wait for the leaves to start coming. :)
I have an avacado growing now, it just set out a new set of leaves... but i thought it may be diseased or dying... beacause all of the older leaves fell off, is this normal?
@GardenNewbie It's not really "normal" for the old leaves to fall off unless it's many months old. It's concentrating all it's energy to the new growth. Do you have it by a window or under a grow light? Are you changing the water or just adding to it? I recommend, if you can put it by a window. If you are using direct faucet/tap water, I suggest that you just add water to it and don't exchange the water due to the chlorine.
@dianemummvideos I grow them indoors and also in my patios. I did put my much older avocado plants out where it was getting direct sunlight, it was doing fine at first but after a while, it just got too hot and the leaves were showing burnt marks and it slowed down it's growth. They were only between 6-10 months old then. I guess too young for the florida summer heat.
will the plants grow avocados of there own ? and will it grow to be a full grown avocado tree ?

@PaTudie I'm sure it would, but you would have to be careful where you cut it. I wouldn't know how to do that. ^^

@rsrawat1947 Nice selections. Roots tend to find their way in dirt. They may grow upward but eventually will go down. Plants are smart. ;)

Im growing acouple alvacado seeds and i was wondering, will these plants when they grow up have alvacados or do they need to be pollinated???

@c42681 They are best to be grafted. Do a google search.
walker11288 3 months ago
@c42681 Sorry for the late response. They will fruit, but you do need more than 1 avocado plant to have successful fruiting trees. :)
