I know its better without abs i drive both all the time and i prefer not driving with abs. but still it works better braking on all four wheels than tapping the handbrake. That would make most people loose control even more.. i actually tried your tip today and strangely enough i stopped alot faster with regular brake than only handbrake.. and more controlled.. so wierd...

Totally preventable.

Assume the road will be very slippery and crest very slowly.

Downshift if rear wheel drive.

Apply brakes very gently so wheels, especially steering wheels, do not stop turning and cease steering ability.

If unable to stop, signal and simply pass the uphill car.

to fozzy.. what i meant by slowing down is by driving slow in the first place (from the moment you put it into drive and getting out onto the street, etc) if you speed up too fast towards the hill, then yeah there isn't going to be much time or distance to slow down to avoid the crash as this was the case in this incident. If the driver would have just driven slow from the time he started, the crash would had been avoidable.

@ken1792 how can you slow down if your on a hill were the gravity is pulling the car faster than you can slow down. have you ever drived in snow and ice. if you brake, you lose traction and go faster. if you change down the gears too much you lose traction and game over. there is not much you can do in this situation. if she/he was doing 30mph down the hill to start with then yes, i would say moron, but we dont know so it should not be said.
