I like the vocal ornamentation supplied by Malas-Godlewska at the end of Ragin's performance. Whoever wrote the aria interpretations did a dramatic and attractive job, although some people argue about the "lack of authenticity" of some of the interpretations. Ironically however, Sony overlooked two very experienced, superior Baroque singers of the time, Andreas Scholl and Maria Cristina Kiehr, when they made their selection, whose voices and technique come far closer to the castrato sound.
these vidz go great with Fencing videos! no doubt, (considering his value and importance), Farinelli was permitted to carry a rapier! but how good was he with it?
ok i was reading up on what they did to farinelli in that time period. but do you mean to say that there were others who werent as successful who also "said goodbye to their "manhood"
Think of it as opera singers today.. many are trained, but few make it to the stage. Same with castrati.. many were castrated but few were able to live from singing due to lack of popularity.
Im learning about this in my music class and it sound cool it is messed up what they did to him to make him sing like that. Check out Alessandro Moreschi.
Joseph Haydn, who came within hours of being castrated, recalled how enthusiastic he was about it. A chance visit from his father stopped it just in time. But it wasn't so must the castration his father objected to. It was because it would have barred JH from the priesthood. Different times, different values.
Farinelli amassed a huge fortune and died a wealthy man, so wouldn't feel too sorry for him - Moreschi maybe, not Farinelli.
@Zantorc Yes, we need to re-instate that tradition and castrate a lot of leaders as well as religious nuts on this planet. Castrating all clergy, for example, will be a fine start. :)
Hermisisima epoca?
I have this record, it was edited 1000 times in the recording and has two soloists, a soprano and tenor alternating for their appropriate passages of notes

is a conncecuence of castilian so is a dialect only with a great power that catalan and gallego don tot got. i must say that force that literature give to portuguese.
??? ce n'est pas farinelli qui ici, dsl. C'est juste un mixage entre plusieurs voix (féminineset masculines) pour imiter au mieux la voix d'un castrat. En revanche il existe un enregistrement d'un des derniers castrats du début du XXe.
"you mean obrigado" but the portuguese is a concecuence of castilian The only thing is that got the power of lenguage for the brilliant liteartura more than catalan or gallego. gracias
Your wrong about that. Portuguese evolved from galaico-portuguese, a mixed language in galiza and northern portugal. We are not a regional language like catalan.
Arias such as this one prove that Nicola Porpora was much more than merely a conductor and a voice teacher for famous castrati. I am glad that this aria is available to us, although I would like to hear it sung also by Scholl, Jaroussky, Marian, and/or Wong.
I dont understand one word but obviously a lover is in pain , beautiful performance, thanks much for posting.

of course, the common use in italy at that time was to castrate them as a child and not everybody was famous or succesfull

wasn't it easier to let women sing opera? no, they had to make a man sound like a women..

You're judging this from a modern perspective eg:
Joseph Haydn, who came within hours of being castrated, recalled how enthusiastic he was about it. A chance visit from his father stopped it just in time. But it wasn't so must the castration his father objected to. It was because it would have barred JH from the priesthood. Different times, different values.

@dragaoastro69 Sorry dear, but catalan is not a "regional" language.
7 milion people in four different countries speak catalan.
Anyway, "regional languages" concept represents only a political point of view.
