What I don't get is how Mai's theme flows on so well from the first one with the opening, while this one... ugk.

I think Mai's the one you're intended to fight, music-wise. IDK, might be wrong.

Blue and Red, Mercy and Cruelty, Sorrow and Anger, Wisdom and Power, Ice/Water and Flame. Something as simple as coloration and such can really tell a lot o.o

Also blue means mercy, while red/crimson can mean strength. Is this why Mai is shown to have a less complex pattern?

From what I've read:

"The symbolic meaning of the color crimson was of fire and associated with power and importance - a color which stood out."

Seeing as she uses fire, the Crimson makes sense.
