I've tried Open Solaris in the past . It's a bit of a ram hug . The package manager was developed by the creator of Debian . Ian himself . That's why it looks SO MUCH like the Synaptic Package Manager . Ian left Debian and joined Sun the turncoat . Anyway . The future of Open Solaris is uncertain .

Have you ever ever heard of Nexenta? It's more or less an Ubuntu distribution built on top of the OpenSolaris kernel. You don't have to pay for anything with it, and it's in active development, with it's latest beta being released on July 28th.
