He is not even close to the greatest, just look at his dismal playoff stats. Then the way he bowed out in an indecisive manner to free agency, which screwed the Leafs future as he was one of their only assests. True enough, but even in a 6-team league, the odds of winning the championship 4 times in 5 years (like they did in the 40s/50s) are relatively slim. Sundin was a very good player, never the best of his time. The Leafs of the "old days" had some of the biggest names ever enscribed on the Cup.
Perhaps I am just a mark for the old guard (and Canadian players), but Sundin will never stand out, for me, as the greatest ever.

Sundin / Ferguson / MLSE ruined the team, mostly the latter. I used to stick up for him as a player (very good offensively) He was a lousy captain, no heart, the Leafs have gotten further in the playoffs when he's injured. (Roberts and McCauley) He should have waived his no trade clause, now he is hated by many Leaf fans who would have missed him. He is the best offensive player the Leafs have ever had but not the best overall, not even close.

Saying Clark is a greater player Sundin is just a ridiculous statement. Sundin has over 1300 points in 1300 matches. It doesnt make any sense at all. I mean, Clark isnt a bad hockey player, but he isnt even close to Sundin in any part of the game.
For us Swedes team loyalty sometimes means more than producing goals. Mats is a legend in Sweden, but in all honesty he has always been more loyal to the Leafs than Three Crowns. many of us just wish for hem to finally get the S. Cup. yea im totally for canadian players too.. only a few euros impress me.. but sundin with the right team behind him could of had a stanley cup, buts lets face it... the leafs management before... well lets not even call it management... but n e ways after gilmour and clark left... sundin never had a real chance at a cup... only the leafs and habs have won cups like that... but u just cant compare todays game to back then

Okay, once and for all. Mats is NOT the greatest Leaf ever.
He was very talented and gave us a decade plus of great play - but most people saying that have never seen the true Leaf greats ever play. Teeder Kennedy, Conacher, Armstrong, Primeau, Salming, Bower, Broda ... c'mon, watch some tape and learn your history before making those kind of extreme claims.

A waste of talent playing in Maple Griefs. He wasted 13 of his years playing for them and some of you trash him sayin he has no heart? Grinding year after year in a team that has no potential what so ever to win the cup... Thank god not all ML fans are that ungrateful.

it's only few, most leafs love and respect him. he's what a leaf should be, he broke the records with no ego, never complained, and made everyone on the team matter. a great leader and a class guy, rare to find anyone like him.

Sundin / Ferguson / MLSE ruined the team, mostly the latter. I used to stick up for him as a player (very good offensively) He was a lousy captain, no heart, the Leafs have gotten further in the playoffs when he's injured. (Roberts and McCauley) He should have waived his no trade clause, now he is hated by many Leaf fans who would have missed him. He is the best offensive player the Leafs have ever had but not the best overall, not even close.

for all the people that are still holding a grudge on Sundin, you need to let go. the reason he stayed and didnt want to be traded was because he thought they still had a chance to make the playoffs and they did still have a chance. and as to him not resigning, well, he was unsure about his hockey future for half a season, and he still had interest in returning to the leafs, he just wanted to win a stanley cup as well

Because he fucking backstabbed us by not letting us trade him. He made it clear he wasn't gonna re sign so we try to get something for him and sundin was a huge baby and wouldn't be traded.

Saying Clark is a greater player Sundin is just a ridiculous statement. Sundin has over 1300 points in 1300 matches. It doesnt make any sense at all. I mean, Clark isnt a bad hockey player, but he isnt even close to Sundin in any part of the game.

For us Swedes team loyalty sometimes means more than producing goals. Mats is a legend in Sweden, but in all honesty he has always been more loyal to the Leafs than Three Crowns. many of us just wish for hem to finally get the S. Cup. Mats has given his whole career to the Leafs, and what a career it has ben.
