I set a password, mac address, and I set it as non broadcasting. The name of the network is not broadcast. To connect you need the password and the network name.
Another thing you can do, it's what I have done. Is to first of all, use Static IP's over Dynamic ones. Secondly, limit the IP Address Range that your router allows. It sounds stupid, but think about it. My routers IP Address Range only allows for the IP's that I use, nothing more, and every IP I use, is Reserved to a specific system on my network. So, even if my password were to be figured out by someone, my router will not assign them an IP, it would be out of range. NO IP= NO ACCESS
One way to effectively kick people off is to discover who they are. Devices can be used to locate the source (home, apartment, etc) of a signal accessing your connection. At the same time, programs used by hackers can hack their connections as well, allowing you to monitor until info is found to identify your suspect. If either method is successful, hire a lawyer and sue the scum for all he has - including his computer.
i use wpa2 (AES) with a 63-character long password consisting of random upper-case, lower-case, numbers and symbols. Hopefully this will be enough to secure my network....
Also i wanted to add that most people run WRT54g linksys router, the best thing i can say is go with DDWRT firmware, gives LOADS of features that most people will probably never use.
MAC filter can work because you need to know the exact MAC address that is open and if the computers are turned on, there will be no MAC addresses available.
MAC filtering, disabling SSID broadcast, and removing your router's antennae stay amongst the top and best performing implementations to prevent your tech-ignorant neighbor from downloading movies over your internet connection, period. 95% of the posters here wouldn't even know where to start to identify/spoof an authenticated MAC address, much less understand what happens when there are conflicting MAC and IP addresses, and less so know what specific packets to listen.
The most important thing in security is that there is no such thing as being totally secure (unless of course your computer is not connected to the outside world at all). All these security measures are what we call Defense in Depth. They allow different layers of security to make it difficult (but not impossible) to break into. So any security measure is better than nothing, even WEP because chances are most people won't know how to break it, unless they're into security and such.
No. MAC isn't an IP. A MAC address is a unique number that is used for wireless cards. A MAC address never changes, unless you "spoof" it. Spoofing a MAC address is not hard at all. (Even my WRT54GL router can do it... with the default firmware)
So... you're telling me that MAC address filtering is a good way to secure your router... what stops someone using a MAC address spoofer? Not very much.
uMM some one connecting to your network when its broadcasted freely is not hacking. MAC address filtering can be broken in a few minutes it is not hard to do. I would suggest turning on WPA or WPA 2 ontop of it.
i did but i forgot to mention it i have wpa-psk and mac filter and on top of that i check my network every week just to see how its going and whos conntected
Security slows down your internet connection. Use MAC Address filtering and disable your SSID and no one can connect to your router unless you input there MAC Address.
This guy doesn't understand wireless security. If you're not an expert, don't answer the question as if you are. All of the methods he listed for securing the wireless network are only effective against people who possess little to zero wireless networking knowledge.
Home networks are most easily secured using WPA2 PSK and using a long and strong passphrase. Do not bother disabling SSID beacon because it provides no benefit against an even moderately skilled intruder.
You are right, this guy is saying all the fundamentals like he is teaching Junior High. Sure you can activate WPA2 PSK and MAC Filtering and Limit device access but note that we are talking about a home network. Only the dumbest hacker will waste so much time trying to crack even WEP2 on a home net.
i think he knows what he's talking about. He didn't mention the first step though. That would be to make sure you've set up your router with a NEW username and password. I can't count how many networks i've seen with WEP passwords but the router's password was still "Admin/Admin" :)
1. Turn of SSID beacon 2. MAC address? Dude you can spoof as all MAC layer traffic and be viewed with a wireless sniffer. To secure your wireless do WPA2 PSK for home use and use a long and hard key that can not dictionary attacked...

Remember MAC Addresses can be spoofed. But hiding the SSID, WPA2, and MAC filtering is usually more than enough to stop the script kiddie next door
mewrox99 2 years ago
@mewrox99 I agree, i always setup WPA2 and mac filter, i run alot of wireless stuff so hiding doesnt work in my case.
Its too easy to spoof MAC's, also WEP is easily cracked, would not suggest it either.

is wireless lan the same thing as wifi? if so then whats so different about wifi?

MAC filter sucks, you can spoof a client's alreddy allowed,.
good security;
1.Enable WPA (NEVER WEP, and chose a wpa key 10-20 dig long, and make sure it's not a word you would find in a dictionary)
2. dissable SSID broadcast
3. change the default SSID

MAC filtering is COMPLETELY worthless. Very easy to fool MAC filters.
Chris has a lot to learn about wireless security.
Hidden SSIDs are also worthless.
Use WPA or WPA2 with a long pass phrase with symbols, capital and lower case letters.
stchman 2 years ago
Well, actually you can also change a MAC adress of your PC Wireless device...
So you can scan a network for MAC adresses, choose one that is authorized and type it into yours. Then access will be granted.

@squibbae WPA2 PSK is extremely hard to crack... It CAN take years (literally) to decrypt a WPA2 PSK hash.
I suggest you read and learn before you slate someone for answering a qwestion correctly...
