  • Definitely agree with those lauding the infinity engine games... this and Planescape: Torment solidified my long-standing casual interest in video games, and I've never had quite the same engaging play experience since. (Not that there aren't great games, just not ones I've connected as fully with as some in that era).

  • I wish i could have a selective amnesia that would allow me to start this game fresh without remembering all the 20,000 playthroughs i did in it.

This, and Planescape: Torment are forever my favorite RPGs, they just don't make them like this anymore...

  • This game doesn't fuck around. One of the best I've played, for sure.

  • I've been playing this so long that I can quote this entire thing!

  • It's times like this that I wish BGII was more like Oblivion, with the 1st person POV, so you could take in greater detail the true malice of Irenicus and the torture chamber.

  • @TheIlluminatus503 That's the thing though...Irenicus had no malice for the Bhallspawn and his/her crew, even as he tortured them. He was as empty inside as his gaze at 2:40 in the video. Though his emotionless, methodical approach might make it even more disturbing to witness in detail.

  • Piotr Fronczewski i tak lepiej brzmi w tym intro :)

  • Till this day I remember this game very well. It wasn't the combat, nor the story that made this game special. I don't even remember most of the quests.

What I do remember are the characters. Imoen's laughter. The hesitation in Aerie's words as she spoke of her past. Jaheira's screams as she discovered Khalids body. The stories Jan used to tell, and the amazing way the story of Keldorn ends.

It's the characters that made this game great. It was always about the characters.

  • I played really a lot of games and I have no doubt BGII is the best one ever made. If we talk only about plot PT is better, but overall BGII wins I think.

  • o holy **** ^^ the sequence after 2:17 scares the crap outta me xD

  • This is the 5th best PC game in the world... according to meta critic.

  • @Walsh2571 It is the best game in the world according to me. :)

  • They need to remake this game with better Graphics. I would buy it.

  • @knight4justice

They're remaking it in Dragon Age Origins. Find the user "bgredux" for their videos so far.

  • The freedom to choose in this game is really awsome! evil, good or neutral roads based on your own personality..romances,craftings of rare items found trough the world making into imba weapon/armors,your own personal stronghold be it castle, guildhouse etc etc.. a easy game to play yet really hard to truly master.. the only standout minus i find with this game is the starter dungon.. for a new player it could kill interest a bit fast before they give the real game a chance

  • i played the first one and jizzed in my pants, i played the second and literally passed out lol

  • Best game I ever played

  • "It's a definitive role-playing experience, and the only reason it can't be called the best game in its class is because in a sense there's nothing available that compares to it."

  • And on the seventh day the Lord created D&D...

  • Man this intro's tight :D

    Saervok and Irenicius FTW :)

    Two memorable villains.

  • By the way. The Evil guy is wicked. Too bad his name is Joneleth.

  • @PinoyPsychoPath yeah but people call him Jon

  • When I played this game, I felt that I was in this world. Seriously. No games ever made me feel that.

  • If you are going to hate on modern games. Hate on all the generic shooters! At least WoW is RPG'ish.

  • epic and best game ever made ,respect !

  • the books were hilariously stupid.

  • This is probably the best game ever. I don't find much competetition.

  • I would be willing to sign up for a petition to remake baldurs gate or atleast continue the game like it was with a few better graphics but all in all not changing the game system relevantly ! Is anyone else so fanatic thats whats more BG ? ; )

  • @soppapoika buy the expansions for more of that stuffz.

  • @soppapoika Better graphics? That seems to come with game system changes automatically, judging by games like NWN and such.

I'd love another Baldur's Gate styled game, including the looks. No zoom and being able to look from 20 different sides - just, the top-down isometric look once more. Maybe a bit more 3D-ish (I'm fine with 2D, but we know that won't sell since people these days always want shiny graphic first >_>), but no DAO/NWN-styled graphics. And indeed, the same game system.

  • @Mercurite There is a massive mod community for the Baldur's Gate games adding hundreds of hours and bug fixes galore!

  • @countingdown27 I'm aware. I have even tried a rather large number of them. But mods are no substitute for a full game, though they can be fun to play with.

  • This IS the best Computer RPG ever created, and i think it will be the best forever.

3D Graphics was the death of decent RPGs.

    Dragon Age my ass.

  • BARBARIANS.

  • i'd reccommend the books on baldur's gate too for peeps who havent read them as they are really good i thought, especially the first two by Phillip Athens. Just thought i'd mention it to BG fans ^^

  • The books are fucking terrible. Not anything like the games at all. Minsc does not have red hair, damnit!

  • @iranicus Protip: the books suck!

  • @dujl fuck that the books were awesome

  • @Dfnoboy Sure, if you like fanfic sort of stuff. This is a great game, the books were not great literature.

  • Bioware ftw for RPGs

  • Baldur's Gate

    Icewind Dale

    Planescape: Torment

All were made with the same engine. Are those the only three that Black Isle worked on with this engine? What other games are like those 3? ty reply

  • @Biake22 The entire Baldur's Gate saga (BG1+TotSC, BG2+ToB) was created by Bioware. Black Isle has produced Icewind Dale series (IWD1 + HoW, IWD2) and Planescape: Torment. As far as I know, these are the only Infinity Engine games. The engine was also created by Bioware.

  • This is really amazing game, the best game ever!

Black Isle studios maked sooooo good games :)

  • @Backwayonly Baldur's Gate wasn't made by Black Isle. It's a Bioware product. But I agree on that, Black Isle did create many awesome games :).

  • @Raviniax Actually, Black Isle did assist Bioware on creating all their RPG titles on the Infinity Engine which the Interplay/Black Isle logos on the gameboxes testament. I doubt the games we all love would have been the same if Black Isle had not helped designing the games. Nevertheless, we can look forward to a Baldur's Gate III from Atari/Bioware (Atari owns the license, and Bioware hopefully will become the developer), although it will probably be in 3D :(

  • @jsrh1986 A modified Dragon Age engine with 6 characters and 4th edition rules would be FAR BETTER than anything we have nowadays. Every decent RPG is one character based! Doubt Bio will do it as Atari is nearly bankrupt. And a different publisher that doesn't own them, right?

  • BioWare, not Black Isle.

  • OK... I can bench press 300lbs+ (135KG+ ) in an undershirt any day of the week... but when I was playing this, and I woke up and found out Jaheira left me... crikey... I shed a few tears...

Who can't relate to Minsc and Boo ???

    .... This game is EPIC...

Mass Effect is in the ballpark, but not quite there.....

  • Something I've always wondered about... Who exactly are the men who kidnap the PC and the party? I though that Irenicus hired some mercs or somebody but they must have been pretty powerful to neutralize the party so easily. And then you never hear anything about them afterwards...

It's also possible they were some of Bodhi's vampires, I suppose...

  • Does anyone know from actual experience whether the IE games will work in Windows 7 ? I'm fearing that they may not. I'm not going to upgrade until I know for certain.

  • They work on my Windows 7 64-bit edition so yes, they are going to work for you.

  • And Baldur's Gate 1 works on Windows 7 64-bit too, so do not afraid to upgrade to 64-bit experience.

  • That's valuable, reassuring info. Cheers.

  • Yes. The only restriction is for Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast which works only on english editions Windows 7.

  • best game ever

  • Best RPG ever.. Loving it!

  • Best Dungeons and Dragons based game EVER period!

  • I'd argue that Torment is slightly better...

  • @Faithintheword You mean BEST GAME EVER period!

  • @Faithintheword Sorry, Planescape:Torment is the best, Baldur's Gate 2 is the second best D&D game...

  • THE BEGGINING RULES!

  • Lilarcor: You know, my last owner always said I was 'sharp' and 'edgy'. He was such an ass!

    LOL!

  • New spells (high and lower level), new items, etc. etc. A strange imp and a certain NPC who can join your party who is strangely familiar - and a bit handy as well. I can't remember any more . These were the days when developers used to treat their customers - and enjoyed it. There's no praise high enough for them makers of the IE games. They are the standard imo.

  • The thing I like about this game is learning spells...memorizing in book, so logical, yet so innovative. I dont know the storyline coz i've only started playing it. Can someone tell me is BG2 ToB the expansion? What does it add? Is the storyline anything like BG2 SoA? (i could just google, but i cbf)

  • Yea it's an expansion of BG2:SOA

    The plot:

War breaks out because there are too many Bhaalspawns, everyone fights everyone, with everything leading to a climactic fight between the strongest bhaalspawn.

    SPOILER!

    SPOILER!

    SPOILER!

At the end you are given three choices:

    1. Return to your mortal life to live peacefully.

    2. Banish Bhaal's evil presence and become a good deity.

    3. Become an evil deity by absorbing Bhaal's evil presence.

  • BG2 ToB is the expansion and allows you to play and max out character levels. I havent played it myself. I just started SoA after playing BG1 with the Tutu mod. These are truly classic and awsome gaming. I like these games because it reminds me of playing D&D - Its not just the style of game I like, but moving the characters around reminds me of playing D&D on my kitchen table as a kid. Great story telling as well...

  • Throne of Bhaal is well worth getting. I can't remember how many chapters it adds but it's a generous amount of extra gameplay. And the quality of the gameplay is, imo, stunning. Watchers Keep is a brilliant dungeon. The level cap is raised to 40 (?) There's too much goodness to tell you about - just buy it ! BG2 + ToB = art.

  • The infinity engine games are works of art, but I never did get around to play TOB... I did put countless hours in playing the other games in the series. For me, I just couldnt get into the high level spells, ect.

  • It's one of the best value expansions of all time imo - if not the very best. Watcher's Keep alone makes the experience worthwhile. A fitting end (sob) to a great series : the greatest. The people who wrote this series hit an artistic peak which no-one else has risen to since. And most of them were involved in making P :T too. There are no games of this quality appearing today and no good reasons for wasting money on new hardware imo. BG2 + BG1 + P : T = the benchmark.

  • I agree, best games ever...I can't understand people glorifying morrowind or final fantasy..both are highly inferior to these games, not just in story but in stupid gameplay(morrowing-waving with your sword like playing quake with an axe, and final fantasy boring 1000 same fights). These games are so simple, but have so good and complex story, easy to learn gameplay and great characters...I never get bored of infinity engine games.

  • morrowind, oblivion, final fantasy, baldur's gate, mass effect, dragon age - all of them are excellent games in their own different ways.

  • @Thunderer7 I wouldnt say highly inferior, for example ff7 is one of the greatest game made..its just so different than bg..dont compare them...

  • @Thunderer7 have you seen these fucking graphics. get fucking real fanboy

  • @unpalpable7

    Graphics don't mean shit.

  • @unpalpable7 this is the best RPG ever released, it resurrected the a dying genre, and now, in large part because of this game most games have RPG elements.

Granted, games with better technology have been and will be released.

As im sure there will be games with better story and characters (like mass effect 1 & 2).

But this is the Alexander the Great of video games, because it got so many things right that its kind of a miracle (much like Fallout 1 and 2).

  • @Thunderer7 both are inferior... in your opinion? Oh right then. You know, there's this thing about personal subjective opinions...

  • @Thunderer7

Everyone's entitled to his own opinions. If I like final fantasy, or If I like The Elder Scrolls, does that make me a "Bad Person"? Does it make me "Stupid"?

  • Unfortunately, i am too young to appreciate this series.. :(

I think the closest game that i really got into that is near that era.. was Age Of Empires II

  • 23 years old and you say "too young"? My cousin is 20 years old and he played this series.

  • did u read all of my profile? I believe i stated that im only 15..

    :D

  • Oh, I didn't read that. However, even if you are 15 years old, I think you should still play this game. Everyone should play it.

This is the best game ever made (BG1+TotSC and BG2+ToB). I played many games in my life and there was no better and epic game than BG.

  • sure enough...I was 12 when I first played Baldur's gate and I still play it alongside with fallout, divine divinity, neverwinter nights, arcanum and even vampire the masquerade, when I get bored. Comparing it to today's RPG standard (which are full of bullshit if you ask me) these are way too sophisticated and I say fuck Bethesda, play anything done by Black Isle, Troika, Interplay and the old SSI games... And being too young to appreciate Baldur's Gate? That's not possible:)

  • frankly i am 17 and i am not to young this series is awesome

  • What?

  • nvm lol just mee being annying =)

  • 1:07 "(...) walked the Earth (...)"

Earth? This planet is called Toril, not Earth. In polish dubbing in intro, there was also "Earth", but I thought it was mistake in translation. Now I see it was mistake in original version.

  • perhaps they walked the earth, not Earth?

  • As far as I know "earth" in english has only one meaning - name of our planet. But maybe I'm wrong.

  • I'm not a native speaker, so I won't argue though the dictionary says something else - that it can also (apart from many others) refer to 'ground' which could make sense. doesn't really matter anyway.

  • The noncapitalized "earth" can mean dirt, or ground, or land. Think "Earth Magic" that mages and elementalists use in many fantasies. It's not magic of the actual planet, but of rocks, sand, and dirt.

  • Thanks for explanation :)

  • Damn if only dark isle was still around imagine if they made a new baldurs gate game with the jefferson engine that would of been awesome

  • Yes this game holds even now would love another game like this its says that dragon age (or something) is the spirutal son of baldurs gate

  • i love this game! nothing since has come close to it IMO (even the newer Bioware games)

After replaying it many times, the only thing i hate is getting out of that damn prison/cave area at the beginning! lol (and the limited voices you can pick)

why cant anyone create something similar? Create another story, SAME game play, many more options, character depth, char.s and VA's, update in graphics & Challenging quest/fights etc

DA:O doesn't look very good especially with their ref to BG tag line

  • It runs perfectly on XP and - at first glance - also on Vista. Good programming probably. What didn't they get right. ? As soon as Baldur's Gate (1 & 2) can't be played on PC i'm ditching my computer. There will never be anything like these games again.

  • I agree! I know everyone likes something and has his own taste in games, cars or whatever..but when someone compares suxor "rpg's" like Morrowind and similar ones to Baldur's gate, that's insane. Story, characters, gameplay sistem and everything else is far, far superior. I hate rpg's where i have to swing my sword like playing Quake 1 only using axe as a weapon xD. Jumping and gaining acrobatics xDD..that's ridicilous. Baldur's gate 2 is the best rpg of all times.

  • I'll ditch mine as well :D We can do it together in protest

  • It would be a pointless but deeply symbolic protest !

  • it says on the system requirements it needs windows 95 / 98, so will it still run with xp?? cos i im reli starting to want this bad boy xD

  • Baldur's gate 2 Shadow's of Amn can work for XP. Baldurs gate 1 will only work for Vista.

  • bg1 works on xp, there are black square glitches on some animations but you can find a way to fix it. Look also for widescreen mode game looks great with it.

  • I play both BG1 and BG2 on XP and they both work fine.

  • Is there a Baulders gate 3 any one know?, & if so is it available for consoles like x-box or just pc only?

  • No, there isn't. Dragon Age is supposed to be a spiritual successor to Balder's Gate though and will come to PC/PS3/360 towards the end of this year.

  • I havent played this yet Well i need to buy it first lol but i loved the first baldurs gate and this looks amazing cant wait to get it!!

  • Just get the complete package, Baldur's Gate 1 + Tales of the Sword Coast and Baldur's Gate 2 with Throne of Bhaal. With all these you can try the Big World Project which merges them all into a single continuous game and add huge mods like The Darkest Days, Shadows of Soubar, Dark Side of the Sword Coast etc....

  • i might have to do that :D

  • BG2 rules! A bloody good story!! harharhar

    Jansan rules.

  • The Infinity Engine games in general were stunning, but the two Baldur's Gates have to get the top prize. Best games ever, simple as that. Kings of the imagination. Never before or since has any team put so much love and so much talent into making a game.

  • Thank you for posting this....it takes me right back to when I first played this game.

What a great game........you know it is great when you play it over and over!

  • Best game ever made, nuff said... WoW don't even come close...

  • i love this game..no matter how often i played it,alway's gorgeous!

The story is so full of fantastic ideas,so many quests and the interaction between the characters makes such a lot of fun to listen to.

    Still my favourite game <3

  • @Flaggius You can't deny that WoW has set a very high standard when it comes MMORPG's and has become one of the biggest and most popular game ever made this far. That being said, you can't even compare the Baldur's Gate series with a game like WoW...one is solely for online play while the other is driven by a vast singplayer experience, that can be re-experienced over and over again for decades. MMO's eventually die out, while games like Baldur's Gate will always be played :)

  • @jsrh1986 You can play Baldur's Gate in multiplayer so it does compare well ;)

  • @Flaggius Amen World of warcraft is a load of shit and it's so overrated too.

  • @Flaggius A guy was saying that Planescape:Torment is the best game ever made-now who must i believe?

  • @ningeaBLADEclanuBECA Both are equally excellent candidates for that title.

  • @ningeaBLADEclanuBECA

Personally I think Planescape is better, but it's so close it's down to individual choice. They are both brilliant.... Planescape IS better though. :)

  • @kalcaron Planescape had a great story, as did the Baldur's Gate series, but Planescape had one major flaw. You had to create your character just as the game designers wanted (very high wisdom) or you would miss half of the story and sidequests. Of course, there was no mention of that when you first played which pretty much sucked.

  • I forgot how hardcore it is :) awsome!

  • This game is amazing. I had some difficulty enjoying Neverwinter Nights because, going through it, I kept thinking about how much darker and higher quality BG 2 was.

  • I totaly agree, best game was BG2, but IceWindDale had some interesting stuff too, but BG2 was AWSOME!

    WE ONE ONE MORE ;)

  • For those of you who want to get the game LEGALLY, there are many auctions for this game on ebay. I just looked myself and even came across an auction for a 4-game pack that includes BGI, BGII, and expansions for both. And they are very affordable.

  • When i was about 6 this intro scared the shit out of me

  • Same :)

  • this is the best game I ever played.

I gonna take it for 1 more spin

  • one of the best games.

  • Everyone who has gotten bored with the first dungeon should download "Dungeon begone!"-mod. After numerous playthroughs even I find some quests boring to do like the De'Arnise Hold. But it does not change the fact that this is and probably will be the best RPG I have ever played.

  • I didn't get bored there! It's the only place with a narrow story and no quest mess which you get when you get out.

  • i so agree with you ... out of all the games ... no matter how new BG2 really hit ma heart ... man i have so mucg alove for this game ... for time i played it i was living inside the game ... i dnt know why they never continued to make another

  • cause Black Isel got shut down and ToB is "The Final Chapter"

  • Hard to watch !

As a hardore RPG addict and playing (I think) almost every main stream RPG including many Japanese RPG's, BG2 has been the best of all.

The story, the sidequesting, graphics, itemisation and gameplay is superb.

If I watch this now, I feel deep emotions. And I believe that if a good movie or book or RPG can really touch you inside, it's good stuff made by good people.

Only FF10 and Zelda:OoT could give me some minor emotions, but BG2...is really in my heart forever.

  • Hehe same with me, however morrowind is the game I have this kind of feeling for :), although its not very mainstream, its not even dnd.

Out of dnd baldurs gate and nwn are great, and besides that ff7 is awesome.

  • This is the best game ever made!!!!!!!! Never encountered a game that provided true RPG like this game does. Baldur's Gate 2 SoA can call itself Mother of all RPGs

  • i agree. its not just a high quality product its also an unreached piece of art.

  • can i import my guy from BG 1 into BG 2?

some1 told me its possible but i jst wanna know b4 i get BG 2.

  • it's possible. that's also the way to get that golemn suit easterthing thingy. you need the golden pants or something from BG1 and add it with some items in BG2, so anyways.. it's possible :)

  • cheers

  • This game was/is the mothafuckin shit.

  • They really dont make em like this anymore. I just got done playing Planescape: Torment, and, dont get me wrong, it was good, but nowhere near the quality of this game. This one and the first one are IMO the best games ever made and probably will be till I die.

  • You're not kidding. The original and this, the sequel will always have a special place in my heart. I got bought the original Baldur's Gate for christmas when I was about 10. I loved it so much haha. Keeping my eye on Dragon Age Origins though by bioware. It's full 3d so I doubt it will be as big as baldurs gate by bioware definately seem to be emulating the bg style that worked so well for them in the past.

  • I love this game but im stuck in the graveyard cause im trying to find a key or something to find the little ghost boy's teddy bear but whenever i go into a tomb it is always so difficult can someone please help????

  • theres a theif in the copper cornet in the backrooms. he has the teddy bear. and i cant believe i remember this stuff, its been ages since ive played this game, ive played ALL of the bg games, with every character build. the most epic saga ever

  • Theres a thief in the back rooms upstairs with the boys teddy, you just have to talk to him and he gives it to you.

  • best game ever made

  • This was my favorite game of all times. Still is and always will be. I wish there was more of this series for the PC, that you could play Imoen or even Saravok in it.

  • Wow, that wasnt much help, but thanks anyway I guess.

  • i agree, but i'm bummed about it cause i can't get out of the stupid drow city... agh! or are you supposed to wait for the beholder for a really long time? (i guess that would be "beat the drow city") :/

    still fkin awesome game...

  • I STILL consider this and BG: TOTSC to be the two best games ever made. I doubt I will ever play a game of this caliber ever again. Ive already played probably hundreds of games.

  • I can understand BG2, but why TotSC? The added quests were fun, I'll give you that, but they were totally irrelevant to the main story in BG1.

    Just curious...

Oh, and I highly recommend you play PlaneScape: Torment - it's a gaming experience unlike any other. =)

  • Oh, thats what I meant about BG actually. I didnt mean to add tales of the sword coast. But the funny thing about planescape is that I have never actually played it. If the story is as good as BG and BG2 im all for it. You know where I can find a copy now?

  • Well, the game's out of production, as far as I know, and eBay auctions tend to go at pretty expensive prices due to it's rarity.

There are... other ways to obtain it... but I won't help you there. =)

As for P:T itself, well, the story, characters and setting are unparallelled by any other game, in my honest opinion.

There is a huge amount of text in the game, however - an estimated 800,000 word count - so if you have no patience for that sort of thing, I'd think twice before buying it.

  • Wow, that wasnt much help, but thanks anyway I guess.

  • When I spoke of "other ways," I was referring to illegal means such as BitTorrent... oh, nevermind.

Just play it if you get the chance - you won't regret it.

  • The game was re released last year sometime. I saw it in game not so long ago, you get BG1, ToTSC, BG2 and SOA on just 4 dvd discs. Who else remembers the 5 cdrom epic that was baldurs gate lol.

  • o ya, I remmeber BG1 when ti first came out...I was like 10 or younger I think...when I first saw it on teh computer desk I thoguht my dad had gotten it for himself or something and wasn't for kids...but he had gotten it for me and my siblings :D...onyl problem wtih BG1 is the length adn the way it runs...enter BGtutu :D I <3 BG2

  • best.game.ever.

  • I like this better than the original! But the whole series is one of the best around.

  • <3 <3 <3 this game so muth !!!

i think im gona download some mods and beat it agan ;) then whath this wideo i understand that i never play this game as bad guy lol, so ill create a badass char and show the world how bad can bhaalspawn be ..!! hehe

  • This Game Rlz ... 4 ever ... Bg 1 & bg 2 ...

  • das beste rollenspiel bis 2008. ich denke nich das jemals irgend ein anderes game da ran kommt..

  • This is in my opinion the greatest game of all time. It just gives you so much! This game is very inspiring.

  • I couldn't agree more. This game was pure artistry. I don't know how many times I've beaten this game, but I'm still not sure whether I've done everything there is to do. There are a lot of good mods out there too. The characters are extremely detailed and entertaining, and every quest feels purposeful and epic. This game brought forgotten realms to life like no other. They just don't make 'em like this anymore. . .

  • i cant describe with words how much i love this game

  • i love this game, i got it for xmas 2000 and i just loved it, the best game i ever played...

  • I love BG....

  • Very powerful game, and inspiring as well. It has a wonderful story that involves you till the end of the whole saga. BG Brings me good memories. the best rpg d&d, for me.
