  • so an aux cord will work?

  • Great job. It worked. Thank you

  • @mariosonic233 DICK THAT'S NOT HOW YOU DO IT

  • I use Izotope RX to rermove background noise and clicks. Works great.

  • you did not say what program you used to convert to cd, or how you burned to cd. get your title right !

  • what about the lame dll?

  • thankyou for the video , im unsure about the bells and whistles every body is going on about your way works and that is all that matters , at the end of the day it is probably only as good as the equipment that you use i am just happy to be able to have a copy on the computer

  • For the best quality, you should use a dedicated sound card to record.

  • BLOODY BRILLIANT THANKS VERY MUCH

    MICK

  • How do u just record the record player. I have a jack hooked up to the mic outlet on my laptop, but i pick all background noises and its bad sound sound quality. PLEASE HELP!!!

  • i think you are knowlegable? do you know about ''intel wireless display'' i got netgears push2 TV and cant find intel wireless display on my computor? thanks can you help?

    samson07@shaw.ca

  • check this video out, its awesome... youtube.com/watch?v=-8CDxWKy2IM

  • Thanks for the video, very helpful. I will give it a try

  • You should name the file "I'm an. Annoying English poof".

  • hello. I made a cd from a two sided cassete once using the stop to chaange sides and using once using the pause. when I playback i get sounds from both sides simontaniously. what is the problem?

    James

  • @26Bigdogs Could be one of two causes: either the playback head on your tape deck could be poorly aligned, or the tape could have a problem known as "Print-through"

  • what about CD to LP? I want to know, I looked all over the Internet! WTF! :(

  • Doesnt work, theres very little sound and hardly anything on the graph.

    help

  • man you are so slow

  • Audicity is great. but, you guys should try Dak's Click and Pop Assassin - Click, Pop And Hiss Filter/program. very easy to use and does so much. saves time by removing the clicks and pops itself. Audicity does a great job but you have to manually go into the track itself and do the editing yourself. can't go wrong with either.

  • Thanks for the instructions. Is there anything similar (i.e. free) to transfer VHS to digital format ? It'd be great to get some old stuff off those tiny tapes I used for my old video camera before they get lost.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks so much, this worked brilliantly!

  • This is brilliant It's really easy and worked well, thanks!

  • Hello! I have tried to record a mix using my turntables, mixer & audacity using this method but with mixer. The sounds quality i get is terrible, very distorted! I have tried changing many different but cant find how to get rid of the distortion. Can anyone help with this? Thanks

  • @PhatBoySky Something, somewhere along the line, has its gain up too high.

  • Don't you have to apply the RIAA de-emphasis EQ curve?

  • @fastfourier666 That's a good question. I didn't, but this turntable had a small preamp which I imagine would take care of that

  • IT ALL BETTER BE FOR FREE! OR ELSE!

  • Thank you

  • Nice song Help Beatles

  • Damn, I just got rid of my old turntable for a USB one that came with audacity.

At least it has HUGE speakers, I guess...

  • you just saved me a ton of money, Thank you Awesome!

  • You just saved me a ton of money. Thank you. Awesome!

  • Hi Digiwizuk,

I've been reading around this subject. Some believe a pre amp is needed.

    What's your opinion, please?

It seems to work for you on your demo without a pre amp.

    Regards

  • Very helpful, but I am going to try it on my computer and see if it works.

    Thank you very much!

  • thanx! that was simple...It is a project that I have to start now...and I didnt know it was that simple.... :)

  • Haven't you taken stereo and made a mono CD?

  • Im trying to pay attention but its hard because your amazing voice is so distracting. ^_^

  • Hi have recorded cassette tape which was a copy and saved it as a WAV format Media player will play it but will not burn it on to a cd.states there is nothing there. Can I overcome this ?

  • Omg that my fav song lol (-;

  • Comment removed

  • Why would you want to convert vinyls/cassettes to digital form? That is soooooooooooooo gay! Just buy the CD or go to iTunes! Shit!

  • @VideoUploaderTester

Actually, youre the gay one. If you did your research, you would know that ITunes quality blows, and they don't have everything. Also, not everything was released on CD! Go find me Anthrax's Metal Thrashing Mad, or Megadeth's 1985 version of Killing Is My Business. Neither are on Itunes. And only the Megadeth record was made on CD, but the original is incredibly hard to find, and converting from cassette to mp3 is much more convenient. Idiot.

  • @Metalhealth93 You must be either a nigger, a chink, or a kike :)

  • I tried one song from a cassette tape deck & it worked, but sounded "tinny".

The vocals were great, but the background instruments sounded tinny like it was missing something. The tape plays fine thru the tape deck. Is their an effect to correct this? or do I need to adjust the volume? The cassette tape is HX Pro.

Any help u can provide will be appreciated.

  • Extremely helpful

  • I already have Sony ACID Music Studio 6.0, will this work the same with this software?

  • Helpful, thanks!

  • Nick,

You could not have made this any simpler. I really dug your first song selection! I saw the Beatles twice and it was awesome. In a few days I will start the process of putting my past into the present. Thank you so much.

    Bob

  • How long can I record a track? (I want to convert a ~2 hours long track into cd) can I do that is one track or shall I split it into many? :)

  • @thegreatMSG A standard 700 MB CD will hold up to 80 minutes of audio. Sounds like you'll want to split it up into two files for two discs.

  • Thanks for the info, Good Stuff !!

  • You do realize going through the microphone input monauralized the source, did you?

  • Comment removed

  • @19CACTUS51 The problem was it came through mono - the Audacity waveform proves it. Most mic inputs are mono, so to talk about it like you can reliably get stereo through that source. When I plug my TT into my mic input I get left channel only in both channels, so it's not absolute.

  • @JRNelsonSr - Trying this in the form of an answer video, it might not be so clear. The differences in the two stereo channels aren't as visually obvious as I thought they'd be - a few moments like George's descending guitar riff stand out, but much of the time the two channels respond equally. The fact that the scratches at the start of the record are equal still suggests mono - surface noise is always stereo - but it's not going to show on this little screen.

  • So helpful! Thank you!!!

  • yes have the headphone and the mic socket, have tried mini jack to mini jack in both, but audacity does not recognise where the sound is coming from, on your vid at approx 2.57 minutes that particular action I cannot do, if I try to scroll down it won't let me, it just stays blank, it is a brand new laptop so cannot figure what is up, have right clicked speaker in the right bottom it brings up vol preferences but does not recognise a mic, any help please.

  • @steven3433 This video is a couple of years old now, I have posted an updated version using Vista, if that's any help?

  • @DigiWizUK So happy I found your post. Bought a turntable 3 years ago, just couldn't work out how to use Audacity.. Dumb blonde, lol..

  • I have downloaded audacity and when I go to change the sound input, ie microphone, it will not let me choose anything, ie microphone, audio input, it just blanks it off, can you tell me what I am doing wrong.

  • Great video! Thank you

  • Can you make a video, where you yell " FOR SCOTLAND!!!" ?

  • Superb video, thnx Nick.

  • Excellent video! Expert advice! You should upload your video to Ewisdomtv

  • I respectfully disagree that you don't need a phono preamp. Buying one is hardly a bad strategy. Yes, you can get by without one, but they're cheap enough that you don't need to. There are good, inexpensive preamps out there (Behringer makes a nice one for about $20). Buying one is a GOOD strategy, as it will greatly simplify your recording process.

  • Thank you. You are awsome! Just a suggestion: you may want to reshoot the video with a better resolution. The screen is hard to see and at times it goes out of focus. Nevertheless, thanks for the demonstration!

  • Attention record rippers! If you do not have a pre-amplifier, you do not need to buy one! Doing so is a waste of money because it is a bad strategy and you would be wasting your time. Simply buy left and right RCA plugs that are wired to a 3.5 millimetre plug. Connect the left and right RCA plugs to the tape recorder output of your amplifier.

  • I am using Audacity 1.2.6. I did buy a pre amplifier for $22 and it is working well for me. At first it was too loud and everything distorted and I had to eliminate the Microphone boost on my computer. Slime Tron 5000 please comment: you probably know more The only problem I had with them are: 1. I have no line in imput to my sound card and 2. my amplifier is big & bulk and in the basement and is connected to several other components & is a big hassle for me to move it.

  • What version of Audacity are you using?

  • I went further than adjusting my microphone volume and found that there was a microphone boost under "advanced" on my microphone volume control panel. When I took the "boost" it seemed to work exceptionaly well. I am recording to almost the 0 level but reach it very seldom. If I find problems with this I will report on this site.

  • Do not connect to the microphone socket. Instead, connect to the line-in socket of your sound card whilst you begin the feed from the RCA tape recorder output. On my integrated amplifier and receiver, the output is called 'TAPE REC'.

  • @SlimeTron5000

Where is the "line-in socket" for my sound card located? I feel like an idiot for even asking this question!

  • Tell me your sound card. Or, you can read the operating instructions. Or, you can guess.

  • I record with no preamp and the volume is too low to hear well in a car. I add a custom audio phono preamp with a output level of 500mV and all the recording goes to 0. I adjust the micorphone imput on my computer control panel to low or zero and it makes no difference. ???? Thanks

  • Monitoring the audio using playthrough

The simplest way if you wish to hear what the monitored input sounds like is to go to the Audio I/O tab of Audacity Preferences, and enable Software Playthrough. Don't enable this option if you are recording sounds the computer is playing with the sound device's "Stereo Mix" or similar option, because this will lead to echoes or even failure of the recording.

  • Mr Digiwizz: Please tell us more about the turntable. Does it have inbuilt pre-amp? Does not seem possible to run it in without. ---With respect of cassettes, they would have their own pre-amp out, so I suppose a nice low level is o.k., but the turntable needs RIAA pre-amp. --That aside, Audacity impresses.

  • DigiWiz:

My CDs are clear but not loud enough to be heard clearly in the car. Did your turntable have a pre-amp in it? Mine does not. Do you suggest using one? My recording levels never get over the 4/5 level. Also will minimizing Audacity while recording and using my computer for other things at the same time as recording hurt the quality of the recording? Thank you.

  • Can you do How to Convert Laserdiscs or VHS tapes to DVD or VCD - For Free! please?

  • Can you do How to Convert Laserdiscs to DVD or VCD - For Free! please?

  • What if my record player doesn't have an output to plug the cable to?

  • Margarita: Try coming out of a headphone outlet from phone. Read this whole comment section. there is a lot of information in it.

  • THANKYOU1. After I followed your instructions and did the noise reduction before the song instead of during it, eveything worked great. and they transferred easily to VLC of my windows media player and burned beautifully. i have 300 vintage bluegrass albums that will now come back to life. Thank you again.

  • Does any body know how to do the oppisite of this? Like how to transfer mp3 and cds to tape cassettes?

  • @tinpax1

Why would you wanna do this?!!

  • Hey tinpax1: You could transfer a cd to a tape by just purchasing a boom-box with a tape recorder, than tape it off the boom-box. You'd need a boom box with a tape recorder, and these usually also have an am/fm radio included in the unit.

  • If you want to turn a whole album into a cd should you do it one song at a time or can you record one side of the lp, clean it up and then do the same for the other side?

Thanks. This was something I have been searching for a way to do.

  • Even if this weren't useful, I'd still just enjoy this dude's voice.

  • Thanks Nick ,Just what I needed

    Clear and easily understood

    even I understood it

    Thank you again.

  • Excelente ! las instrucciones son sencillas y sin tecnicismos y tu docencia buenísima ! Gracias Compañero.

  • thank you very much.....didnt realise how easy it was....im glad i camr across your page......cheers.

  • Thanks dude this was a lot of help!

  • this has been really usefull man thank you

  • A couple of things I like to do is click software playthrough to hear what I'm recording as I'm recording. If you don't want it to distort, just turn down the microphone input volume a smig. Works like a charm!

  • i've linked up a dictaphone to the computer - dictaphone headphone socket to computer mic socket - i can't hear whats being recorded??

  • You may have your microphone unchecked?

Try using the line in instead or go to Control panel on your PC & then then checking the sound devices.

  • Also is there a limit to how long of an audio clip you can record within the programme?

    Thank you again

  • Hi everyone, Qu I have downloaded version 1.2.6(which does not have the same interface as shown in the demonstration). I have hooked everything up &when I press record in the programme I can not hear what is being recorded. Can anyone suggest anything so I can hear what is being recorded without having to press stop?

Also I would like to save a few mp3's from one tape, is it best to record at once then cut & save or record each one separately?

Thank you for your help everyone in advance

  • @tkulsoom

What you should do is connect your computer in a set of external spraks via the headphone connection on your computer. Your audio device will be connected via the microphoneand headphone jacks. Therefore you hear what is been recorded

  • I downloaded audacity on my laptop then opened this you tube video. i followed it step-by-step and had numerous differences as i went along. then i learned i had downloaded the BETA version. i removed the BETA version and downloaded the correct version for my operating system and wala....it works. i am learning the process but it can be done as it was presented. maybe i was lucky.

  • I tried this. Haven't gotten it to work yet. I have a SONY cassette player hooked up to an amplifier. The in and out jacks of the cassette player are hooked up to the amplifier. I bought the leader with phono/minijack. Which in/out do I hook it up to... On the cassette or amplifier? I'm connecting to a Macbook that does not have mic jack. The headphone jack is in AND out so I guess I connect to that?

  • Wow. That is clever and By the way, where did you get that record player from?

  • i forgot to add that you can listen to whats been recorded by using a audio splitter and a head phone. ;)

  • actually i bout the imic thing for my mac but the vinyl software didnt work so audacity finished the job. great tutorial!

  • Thank you so much! Tried it yesterday and already got 3 cassettes done by last night! Worked great and you're right, didn't cost me a penny!

  • I've got FVD suite on my laptop. It transfers audio to mp3. It also transfers videos to either video formats like AVI, FLV, WMV, MOV, MP4 or PSP or audio formats like MP3, WAV or OGG.

  • Thanks mate, a huge help (no pun intended)

  • Hey

I have done exactly as demonstrated but it doesn't record, there are no waves..Please help.

  • Great video, I have tried myself to convert my Casette Tapes to MP3 in the exact same way but all i get when i press play is static noise, ive tried 3 different casette players and a number of tapes with no result and the headphone jack works as i can use a real headphone set and listen to it.

    Any ideas?

  • Your version of media player may not have the correct codecs, try updating to the latest version

  • Would this set up work for converting a dj mix to cd, using 2 turntables and a dj mixer?. I dj as a hobby and would love to put some of my own dj mixing onto a cd so it can be listened to on a hifi or in the car. Would it be a case of just connecting the lead from the computer to the mixer?

  • Yes, that should definately work, I've done things like this many times myself.

  • Big thanks man!

  • All my songs i have put on to the wav option keep making like a whammy sound and some parts of the songs, anyway i can stop this????

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you. It worked perfectly (although tracking down the LAME encoder was a little tricky). You just allowed me to make a mother's dream come true. I'm preserving her child's voice from 15 years ago. This means so much to her.....

  • Tutorial is good, but why is the turntable plugged into mic input, which is mono and not in line input, which is stereo? and where is a phono preamp?

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you!!!! This was awesome and it really helped!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!!!!

  • I am familiar with Audacity -- I have used it to trim and edit audio for use with videos. I have a few vinyl albums I would like to convert but I don't know how to get the output from my stereo. My turntable has the amplifier built in and there are no output jacks, only places to connect the speakers. Can you give me some advice. Thanks.

  • Do you have a headphone socket on your stereo? use a mini-jack to mini-jack cable to connect that to your computer.

  • thanks for that great help

  • I have a little problem and I need help. I'm following everything he says but I cant get the music from the tape recorder to play on the computer. What am I doing wrong???

  • make sure you are plugging into you Mic input on your computer and not your headphone/or speaker jack, these are commonly confused

  • This was so awesome info. I actually plugged my tascam 4 track into my computer and used audacity to make my own CD of my own music!

  • I'm surprised he's getting anything usable. usually the RIAA equalization curve is needed for vinyl playback..common in any phono preamp, but this player could have it built in. (often a lot do not!) he didn't play with the windows mixer for inputs, which can cause no sound input to come up and be recorded. mic inputs can also be too sensitive for line level audio from a phono preamp and come out distorted.

overall a good tutorial, but could be issues based on the turntable you use.

  • is he putting the jack from his turntable into the microphone input on his laptop? I didn't think you could do that (at least my friend says you can't, I have a laptop, can someone please help me with this?

  • yes u can

  • How do you get the cracklyn out the vinyl sound

  • Go to the effects tab of audacity, scroll down to noise removal. That is the effect you want.

  • damn this helped me out alot im now capable to record my own music and i will

  • Vinyl and cassette are so cheap now.

I just picked up ten cassette tapes for

dollar at a thrift shop going to convert to

    compact disc.

  • what is the exact name of the connector he used in the microphone jack? i'm looking to buy one if I can find it.

  • RCA to 1/8 stereo plug

  • and how u do it on cassette camera??

  • Can I still do this with a laptop? where do I plug in the rca cord? In the mic?

  • It would have been better to use a cassette player over vinyl as more ppl would have that. Not many have vinyl anymore. I was a bit confused. I'm trying to convert my cassettes.

  • With cassettes, use your headphone jack(it is output signal) to your mic input on your laptop and follow the instructions on the video. The type of cable you need is 1/8 stereo to 1/8 stereo.(if u go headphone jack to mic input). On turntable the cable is RCA to stereo 1/8 plug. Make sure cable is stereo plug going to ur pc. Stereo plug has two small black rings on the end of plug.

  • Thanks for such valuable information. Can you please explain the difference between a wave and mp3 file. What is the advantage/disadvantage of each? Thanks

  • but what do you do if your turntable has phono leads coming from the deck? Yours has removable leads, but many don't.

  • Buy female RCA plugs to 1/8 stereo plug, that should do the job.

  • WOW! What a life safer. I am putting tapes onto my computer that are EXTREMELY PRECIOUS to me! And I have you to thank :)

  • thank you so much i tried it and it worked like a charm!!

  • Thank you so much! I was able to take my dad's ancient German lessons from cassette and put them on my computer! Now i don't have to spend all the money for a new CD program! This was a lifesaver!!

  • Thanks Mate!! Solid tutorial - i really appreciate it...

  • Thanks

My Dad is over the moon with delight!!!!!!

  • Thanks you SO much for this! I was trying to figure out how to transfer a cassette to digital that is VERY precious to me. You have really made my week!

  • holyy shit it worked

  • you can also purchase a behringer usb audio interface if computer doesnt give a clear transition of audio.... also highlight the wave form , ctrl A, then use noise removal ... and switch the step two lever at a lesser setting... hope that helps...

  • Great help

  • did you try this already

  • thanks a lot for help!!!! that's so cool to use this programme for converting for free!!! i'm very imprest about how powerful the pc can be ..that's amazing..we can do almost wathever we want ^_^

  • You also have to make sure your computer's sound card supports direct recording-many dont. In this case, you'll need a simple audio interface like an Imic.

  • Great tutorial....learnt a lot from that.....many thanks..

  • This is one of the best Tutorials on this process i have seen

  • Wow... just converted an old Bob & Tom tape (Lollapaloozers) from 1993... a BIG Thank You! :-D

A tip for others: I have one of those "new vintage" Emerson record player/radio/CD player/cassette player things (made out of wood) that I bought in 2006... and all I did was plug in one end of a Belkin 3.5mm Audio Cable ($9.88 at Walmart, with all the iPod stuff) into the headphone jack of the player, and the other end into my Dell laptop's line in jack. Worked like a charm for me! Hope this helps.

  • HI DIGIWIZ, looking @your Turntable It appears to be a ceramic cartridge. Can I still get a high enough output signal from a Magnetic cartridge or is a phono preamp necessary? Thanks!

  • Very informative. I watched this before converting some old casettes into WAV files. One tip: In Audacity, if you select Edit, then Preferences, make sure the box for "Software Playthrough" is not checked. If it is checked, you can listen as the casette is played and being recorded by the computer. However, I noticed that some of my audio picked up an echo effect when I tried this. If the box is not checked, you can't hear the tape while the recording is being done, but there's no echo.

  • Great tutorial! I said it in Youtube before -- I will say it again -> This tutorial business is better left for grown up adults.

  • Connected audio in to the computer microphone jack follow the direction but still have no sound please help what going wrong

  • Very helpful video.Saved me a few quid and a few hours of fustration. Thanks very much for posting.

  • very good - thanks

    =^..^=

  • OK, wich version of Audacity needs to be downloaded???? Thanks!!

  • i ve added the tape to the pc and its on file and i can t transfer it to a mp3,how do i do it????if anyone can email me i'd be greatfull

  • thanks worked it out now. ::)

  • Thank you so much!

  • I got a stereo, and trying to play tapes.. I got a rca cable, red, white and yellow. For tapes when playing in the stereo. I play the tapes. but when I'm trying to use audacity, it sounds distorted. On the microphone symbol, it goes to 0:( any tips

  • lower the recording volume in Audacity, or in control panel-sounds and audio devices.
