Oh god I hope the people get the tape recording of The Smashing Pumpkins and the reference to it falling off the car at the end!

This video is a sequel to "1979" with those kids being older. After filming "1979" The Smashing Pumpkins flew out to play a concert. The tapes for the music video were left on a car roof and the driver left. They were lost and they had to come back and re-shoot it. Nice tie-in!

But I believe the real inspiration for smashing pumpkins is new order - "love vigilantes" as you may know that NO is a big influence on Billy Corgan. It may apply to whipping boy, too. So, I would rather say both of them rip off new order. And maybe whipping boy ripped off more since they used it as the main signature riff in this song.
