  • PARLIAMENT + THE PUBLIC OPPOSE NUCLEAR WEAPONS

On 14.3.2007, the government faced the biggest rebellion on domestic policy since Labour came to power in 97. 161 MPs voted against the replacement of Britain's nuclear weapons facility, Trident.

72% of the British public opposed the replacement. Faced with such oppostion, the government stated that the decision to replace the system was 'not irreversible'

UK GOVERNMENT BEING FORCED TO ACT COULD REALISTICALLY ENSURE WORLDWIDE DISARMAMENT:

  • A framework for total, parallel disarmament already exists in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) lodged at the UN. This is already supported by China, India and Pakistan, and the majority of the world.

UK support could prove decisive in making nuclear disarmament a reality:

Defence Secretary Des Browne has now offered for the UK to "host a technical conference of nuclear weapon states on the verification of nuclear disarmament, before the NPT Review Conference in 2010".

  • Nuclear disarmament is a lovely idea, but it is now, and has been for sometime, impossible.
