I don't exactly know what this commentators have against a very young athlete who, despite the injuries, despite the fall on the injuried knee right before competing and despite an illness came here and nailed a silver medal, but they should be ashamed of some of their comments. Do they even know what sport is?
@Ki104ytr Patrick Chan has taken up the mantle quite well, and Stephane Lambiel is still out there churning out incredibly complicated and artistic exhibition programs. Mind you, both skaters are greater artists than Plushenko. Plushenko is merely the master of jumps. Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of him too but figure skating is far from deserted.
@missperfection77 Figure skaters are not artists, they are SPORTSMEN!!!! I don´ t understand why people keep repeating this nonsense. Are they professional dancers, painters, actors, sculptors, photographers, singers etc???? No!!! They are athlets!!! Some skaters might have nice interpretation but compared to professional dancers they are laughable, believe me!!!
@SimonaCB Well yeah thats exactly my point. THey truly are laughable which is what they need to improve on. Figure skating is the only sport i bother keeping tabs on because it's the perfect combination of art AND athleticism. Except the problem is that most of the emphasis is placed on the athleticism which is why most skaters are so boring to watch. Plushenko is amazing because he's SO godly athletic that he's interesting anyway, but lambiel has both.
@missperfection77 I am so very tired of the Americans! Plushenko is the best jumper, but not only a jumper! Look at his old programs! Therefore he is the king! Tribute to Nijinsky, Moonlight Sonata, Adagio , Tango and flamenco, Gipsy dance, Bolero etc. And yes, Simona is right! This is a sport!!!! Figure skating is a sport! And one thing: Plushenko is superstar in whole world. But Chan will be .. maybe.
@lala630312 Okay figure skating is MORE than just a sport okay? That's why it is so amazing. Are stephane lambiel and Yuna Kim the only ones who understand that? T________T If you look at Kim Yuna, the ONLY thing that truly stands out about her are her jumps in terms of athleticism. She's one of the most inflexible skaters I know (her spirals are so unspectacular) and her spins are of average speed (except the layback is good). What makes her special is her artistry.
@missperfection77 I never said, that FS is only a simply sport. That is a artistically sport, but SPORT! I love Lambi, but he can't jump. I hope you saw the videos, what i sent to you. I help to you, look at this!
THIS IS PERFECT!!!!GREAT JUMPS AND HIGH LEVEL OF ART!!!
/watch?v=SEJXkfMYTX4&feature=related
This is one of the greatest program ever in FS history!!!!
@lala630312 Lambiel& Plushenko are very different skaters. I saw the program you sent me & it's definitely more artistic than his 2010 olympic performance, but it doesn't have the connection with the music that lambiel always has. Lambiel is horribly inconsistent with his jumps, but he's as much the king of spins/artistry as Plushenko is of jumps. They're just different, but competition places ALL emphasis on jumps. That's the problem with figure skating. Most skaters are REALLY boring to watch.
@missperfection77 I agree with you, they are different. There are people who love Plu and who love Lambi. They are very good friends! Lambi was Plushy's training camp, and helped to him and to other skaters( Gachinsky, Tukhtamisheva) prepare for next season! But you are wrong, in Vancouver Plu got higher marks!!!
@missperfection77 At the age of 16 Plu was the youngest skater to ever receive a perfect score of 6.0. He received a total of 75 6.0s before the new judging system was introduced, most of them are the artistry points. Plu is the 2002 (and 2010 he was robbed) Oly silver medalist, 2006 Oly gold medalist, three-time World Champ, six-time Euro Champ, a four-time Grand Prix Final champ and an eight-time Rus champ. He has 53 Gold medal from ISU. I don’t know skater with grater FS achievements, do you?
@lala630312 Yeah okay sure, but my point is that right NOW his focus is all on the quads/jumps, which really defeats half the purpose of figure skating. I REALLY do like him too, and I wished 1st place because idk I'm just not a fan of lysacek (he's too tall or something). If he had focused more on artistry he probably wouldn't have lost to Lysacek.
@missperfection77 Yes, i agree with you, Plu focused on the jumps, as the russians always. They are ridiculously good jumpers. But he won the war, afterOly the ISU changed the rules, and the men need the quad for the winning. And Plu never boring! As D. Button said, can't take his eyes off Plu. If you haven't seen:
@nuzno1 No, Jagudin WAS very very good, but Plushenko Is the best ever! Jagudin is your favorit. But the facts show Plushenko IS the best! Plushenko isn't only the best skater, he is genial. He is the author of many elements, what we can find in the modern skating programs. He is the most decorated champion, he inspires the other skater etc. What are you talking about?
Greatest ever! No doubt! He is out of this world! Godfather of figure skating! Why would he leave the podium so early! He deserved to be standing on the first place on all three of the Olympics!
Awww, right before Evgeni goes out, he gets this "OMG I WON THE GOLD" expression on his face XD it's really cute! I love how he just seems to take quiet satisfaction in what he's done. It's not the smile on his face that counts, it's the one in his eyes. :)
I wonder if these idiotic commentators said the same this year: You wouldn't imagine that someone could win a gold medal without a quad, would you? Hahaha! That's ridiculous!
Just listen to the commentators. As Lambiel steps out on the ice they laugh it off as ridiculous that a guy who can't land a triple axel wins the Silver Olympic medal.
What would they say about the 2010 Gold Medalist, for God's sake, who can't land a quad?!
@brettladyashley To Evan's credit, he has landed a quad. Just not a clean one since 2008 and he barely uses it now. But I guess no one sees the point in having the quad when its base value isn't high enough to make the risk worth it. But if Daisuke Takahashi's win at Worlds is any indication, the quad (flip! awesome!) is not going away and skaters are just gonna have to learn the jump, not just rely on clean 3As.
Yes, Daisuke really did show that the quad is not dead as long as there are ambitious skaters ready to push it to the limit. He did a great Worlds and I'm happy he won so convincingly.
Even more, Lambiel has landed quads, though he can't do the 3A.
But you know what Bulgarian commentators were saying before Daisuke's LP this week? "He said he'll go for the quad. But his rivals made mistakes so, if he's smart, he won't do it, he'll stick to his triple jumps and he'll win." But Daisuke is not just smart - he's capable of doing the quad, he knew it and he did it. So... it's not just about the winning, it's, as someone put it earlier, about making history.
@reallollabunny I hope he lands it cleanly soon. Daisuke that is. he actually got a downgrade on the flip for the landing (I think, am reading the results now). But he was so close. It was just the fact he landed on two feet. Dai made quite a few mistakes but, above all, his performance was the strongest and the cleanest. I am proud of him.
btw, each time I watch Lysacek's LP from the Olympics, I like it less and less.... There's just no life in it, only "painful ambition", as we say in Bulgarian.
Yes, he is the greatest ever. He is the greatest ever in both, technique and artistry. Also if TAT made better programms for Yagudin it came through that Plushy is more artistical.
Qué imagen para la posteridad. Plushenko es uno de los mejores patinadores de la historia y posee un estilo realmente único que ha creado escuela. Por cierto, Lambiel es un excelente patinador; me da mucha pena que se retire...
This was the height of his Yvgeni's career and yet he still could land the quad triple that he landed in his short program (Torino) in Vancouver as well. Having attended 3 Olympics and having been so outstanding in all 3, I believe him to be consistently one of the finest skaters ever born.
WTG Plushenko on an excellent comeback in Vancouver after so much time away!
You are so right! That's what I've been thinking! Alexei Yagudin was great, but he couldn't make it last. Evan is flawless, but doesn't have the guts to keep winning. Only Plushenko is still here, still rocking and still feared by all the wanna-be-s out there! So... "consistent" was the word I have been looking for all along! Thank you!
the only reason yagudin couldn't "make it last" was because of a birth defect in his hip. and lucky for plushenko, because i guarantee that if yagudin had been at torino, things would have turned out a lot differently.
plushenko is probably one of the best technical skaters of all time, but he will never have the passion, artistry and musicality that yagudin had. he had it all, and as good as plushenko is, in my mind he'll always be second best.
look, I totally agree that with Yagudin still on the ice the battle would've been really fierce. I'm really sorry too about his birth defect, though I don't like him that much. but you're right about one thing - he IS more artistic than Plush and flawless when it comes to the technique. What's more, he's so natural and emotional. Plush, on the other hand, is "настоящий мужчина", "a real man" and proud of it. I like that about him probably best of all.
anyway, losing Yagudin was awful for the whole sport, but life goes on. and if I had to choose between being cold but innovative or being very emotional and artistic, I'd choose the first for men's figure skating and the second for women's and ice dancing.
I totally understand where you're coming from, I think we just have a difference of opinion. I'll always pick emotion and artistry over raw masculinity (although to be fair, I always thought Yagudin had both). but you're totally right, Plushenko is, if nothing else, one of the most innovative skaters of all time.
I respect your opinion. we just have very different taste :)
You know, when I saw Plush's reaction just after his Vancouver LP I was like "Oh, stop being so smug! You really need Yagudin to bring you back down to earth" :D
I don't like Yagudin's hair, that's all. Otherwise he was and remains... well, gorgeous :)
totally agree. I always thought Yags had movie star good looks. his hair was always hit and miss for me (I actually didn't mind it in Salt Lake, but most of the time I wasn't a fan) but those amazing blue eyes and the smile...I'm melting at the thought haha.
I've never been a big fan of "blue eyes, blond hair". That's why, maybe, I wasn't trilled by Yagudin's looks. Plush won me with his long hair and big nose :D I still don't consider him handsome, though.
as for Plushenko, I'm still not sure how I feel about him getting the silver in Vancouver. he definitely didn't skate his best, but it does seem kind of crazy that in 2010, you don't need a quad to win the Olympics. it's mostly the fault of the new system I suppose. but I think it also has to do with the fact that, since Yagudin left, Plushenko doesn't really see anyone as a threat, so he doesn't push himself as hard, and then lesser skaters are able to sneak in.
That's one part of it. Moreover, he has always been too confident, in my opinion, and that doesn't help him judge fairly his rivals. And, 3rdly, I've noticed that he only had 2 coaches in his life - Mishin seems to be the most important person in his career. But Mishin doesn't approve of the new system and, what is worse, doesn't want to play along. Neither does Plush. So, in order to stay on top, he needs to do the impossible. Which he didn't in Vancouver. His stubbornness cost him the gold...
@reallollabunny Of course these are not his best program ever. But, he's 27, haven't compete for 3 years and most of all, he's got 3 injuries and operations. He made what he can and still he was competitive enough. But really: his short program at the Olympics was just outstanding. Clean, difficult, perfect. For me it's just unbelievable he haven't got a large points distance from the others. Unless he was first at that time, I was sure he wouldnt won.
@reallollabunny His choreographers for this season were actually new, American, and truth be told...I dislike his LP. If he could find a better choreographer who could help him to add elements that are needed in the new system, and also give him a routine that highlights his strengths, he'd be set. Dick Button's words still remain in my mind, "extremely talented skater, needs a new choreographer." Why can't this amazing skater find someone to match him?
Plush's more of a showman than an artist, IMHO. He feels his programs, but in his own, Russian, masculine way. He does a great show if he wants to, he scares the audience if that's what he's after. But he very rarely shows his true emotions, don't you agree?
And, answering your question, I'm sure he's not an easy person to work with. And he's quite conservative - he hasn't changed his coach, his attitude, anything. I like that about him, but it doesn't help him win. At least for now
@reallollabunny I think I do agree with you. But I never thought you needed to really show your true self when you skated. If this were the case, the only skater who's ever been so honest and in tune with self and emotion was Michelle Kwan.
I do think Plush can be feminine in some ways though. Like using Biellmans and such. But above all he's theatrical and masculine. And I gather he is probably very stubborn. But he's actually improved/worked on stuff like spins, so I have hope.
I have to admit I don't remember a lot about him before last year. I've seen him perform a Biellmann spin but you have to be in very good shape to do that and he probably just didn't have time before the Olympics. Otherwise I agree that he can be feminine, he just doesn't want to. Remember, men figure skating is not ice dancing ;)
I'm glad you say he's improved some things, I can't really say but I certainly hope you're right. I really adore him and I hope he doesn't quit soon.
"because i guarantee that if yagudin had been at torino, things would have turned out a lot differently." This is kind of presumptuous. Plushy worked hard, skated a solid and clean routine, and even if he wasn't the complete package Yagudin was, he could've edged Yagudin out in the end anyway. But we'll never know that now. I'm just happy he got his gold :D
I do however think Plush is serious about his music tho. His bff does his music for him, I think that's pretty passionate/specific!
it's true, we'll never really know what would have happened. I'd like to believe that Yagudin would have taken it, but of course I'm biased.
I really just miss the competition between the two of them. even when Yags lost, it was worth it to see the fire they both brought out in each other. no one else can really compare to either of them. they're the best of the best. and as much as I prefer Yagudin, you can't even really compare them to each other because they're both such different skaters.
ya think. He did geyt robbed. All on prime time television too. You'd think some sane people would do something, but I guess the judges were payed off well by SOMEone.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Please get real. The judging scoring system is quite clear that jumps in the latter part of the program get more points. Plushenko frontloaded his program with sloppy big jumps and had nothing else for the last 2 minutes. Then he has the nerve to complain about the judges looking for the overall quality mark over "big jumps" - when that same tendency of the judges profited the Russians most for God knows how many years. As they say... "an empty barrel makes a lot of noise."
You're kidding me? Plushenko nothing comparable to Lysacek's mediocrity. Lysacek won because the ISU wanted an american to win. Evan's quadless win is a shame! After the Olympic Games the ISU changed the rules, in this system Plushenko would have won and the mens skating would not have the worst winner.
@PD19954 Are you kidding me? Plushenko is not comparable to Lysacek's mediocrity. Evan won, because the ISU wanted an american to win. This was policy.
@PD19954 E. Stojko said: " ..the Figure Skating community wants to control who wins and who loses. And what it does is it makes the component score more valid than the jumps so IT CAN CONTROL WHATEVER IT WANTS. And that's exactly what happened Thursday night at Pacific Coliseum"
"If you take out a quad, it makes the whole program at least 50% easier to do."
come sono orgogliosa di essere Italiana!!siamo stati noi infatti a premiare un simile campione della sua prima(perchè ce ne saranno altre..si spera)medaglia d'oro olimpica!!W Evgeni Plushenko
I found the interesting article.( the interview from " International figure skating") In free program, when Plushenko took his final position, he said " That's it ".To the audience and to the cameras." That's it ". He felt empty, even though he had wanted it for so long. He kept asking himself. " What is the next?" I believe now he found the next.
Evgeni - you are the best! "Out of this world" :D AMAZING!
He is my forever favorite, there won't be anybody like him! He's got an amazing talent, wonderful gift, so much passion for what he does. He is a perfectionist! He deserves the gold like nobody else...

@Herodotus3
Thank you!
reallollabunny 2 years ago 2
the only reason yagudin couldn't "make it last" was because of a birth defect in his hip. and lucky for plushenko, because i guarantee that if yagudin had been at torino, things would have turned out a lot differently.
plushenko is probably one of the best technical skaters of all time, but he will never have the passion, artistry and musicality that yagudin had. he had it all, and as good as plushenko is, in my mind he'll always be second best.
cupcakes2277 2 years ago
look, I totally agree that with Yagudin still on the ice the battle would've been really fierce. I like that about him probably best of all.
reallollabunny 2 years ago
anyway, losing Yagudin was awful for the whole sport, but life goes on. and if I had to choose between being cold but innovative or being very emotional and artistic, I'd choose the first for men's figure skating and the second for women's and ice dancing.
agree?
reallollabunny 2 years ago
I totally understand where you're coming from, I think we just have a difference of opinion. I'll always pick emotion and artistry over raw masculinity (although to be fair, I always thought Yagudin had both). but you're totally right, Plushenko is, if nothing else, one of the most innovative skaters of all time.
I respect your opinion. we just have very different taste :)
cupcakes2277 2 years ago
I see :)
Anyway, I just love talking about it.
You know, when I saw Plush's reaction just after his Vancouver LP I was like "Oh, stop being so smug! You really need Yagudin to bring you back down to earth" :D
I don't like Yagudin's hair, that's all. Otherwise he was and remains... well, gorgeous :)
reallollabunny 2 years ago
totally agree. I always thought Yags had movie star good looks. his hair was always hit and miss for me (I actually didn't mind it in Salt Lake, but most of the time I wasn't a fan) but those amazing blue eyes and the smile...I'm melting at the thought haha.
cupcakes2277 2 years ago
I've never been a big fan of "blue eyes, blond hair". That's why, maybe, I wasn't trilled by Yagudin's looks. Plush won me with his long hair and big nose :D I still don't consider him handsome, though.
reallollabunny 2 years ago
as for Plushenko, I'm still not sure how I feel about him getting the silver in Vancouver. he definitely didn't skate his best, but it does seem kind of crazy that in 2010, you don't need a quad to win the Olympics. it's mostly the fault of the new system I suppose. but I think it also has to do with the fact that, since Yagudin left, Plushenko doesn't really see anyone as a threat, so he doesn't push himself as hard, and then lesser skaters are able to sneak in.
cupcakes2277 2 years ago 4
That's one part of it. Moreover, he has always been too confident, in my opinion, and that doesn't help him judge fairly his rivals. And, 3rdly, I've noticed that he only had 2 coaches in his life - Mishin seems to be the most important person in his career. But Mishin doesn't approve of the new system and, what is worse, doesn't want to play along. Neither does Plush. So, in order to stay on top, he needs to do the impossible. Which he didn't in Vancouver. His stubbornness cost him the gold...
reallollabunny 2 years ago
@reallollabunny Of course these are not his best program ever. But, he's 27, haven't compete for 3 years and most of all, he's got 3 injuries and operations. He made what he can and still he was competitive enough. But really: his short program at the Olympics was just outstanding. Clean, difficult, perfect. For me it's just unbelievable he haven't got a large points distance from the others. Unless he was first at that time, I was sure he wouldnt won.
bravantonella80 1 year ago 2
@reallollabunny His choreographers for this season were actually new, American, and truth be told...I dislike his LP. If he could find a better choreographer who could help him to add elements that are needed in the new system, and also give him a routine that highlights his strengths, he'd be set. Dick Button's words still remain in my mind, "extremely talented skater, needs a new choreographer." Why can't this amazing skater find someone to match him?
xxradiance 1 year ago
@xxradiance
At least for now
reallollabunny 1 year ago
@reallollabunny I think I do agree with you. But I never thought you needed to really show your true self when you skated. If this were the case, the only skater who's ever been so honest and in tune with self and emotion was Michelle Kwan.
I do think Plush can be feminine in some ways though. Like using Biellmans and such. But above all he's theatrical and masculine. And I gather he is probably very stubborn. But he's actually improved/worked on stuff like spins, so I have hope.
xxradiance 1 year ago
@xxradiance
I really adore him and I hope he doesn't quit soon.
reallollabunny 1 year ago 2
"because i guarantee that if yagudin had been at torino, things would have turned out a lot differently." This is kind of presumptuous. Plushy worked hard, skated a solid and clean routine, and even if he wasn't the complete package Yagudin was, he could've edged Yagudin out in the end anyway. But we'll never know that now. I'm just happy he got his gold :D
I do however think Plush is serious about his music tho. His bff does his music for him, I think that's pretty passionate/specific!
xxradiance 2 years ago
it's true, we'll never really know what would have happened.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Please get real.

@dorca000 policy for a country to win? uhh that scoring system was done away with a while back, stop being jelous
PD19954 11 months ago
