I think this could all be a coincidence. My small town identical to this one never had any unusual signs, but almost everybody got the disease within the same week. We used to find blobs of this in the lawns when we were kids. Tacoma Washington. They were the size of a softball flatend out to around 2-3 inches thick, they looked like dead jelly fish only crystal clear. I always knew better some how not to get too close to it and definately not touch it.
