there is some controversy because they worked heavily with their producers recently... but what billie joe described it as was green day had like 40 songs, and their producer came through and said "okay lets get you guys on track. what if we tried this?" and green day liked it and they rolled with it. So the producers had influence... but i dont thing they sold out.

Also, Rap is a genre. Green Day is an artist. It's an entire selection of artist's I'd be going against as opposed to one. Hip-Hop went Pop now, and most Hip-Hop nowaday's isn't really that good. There are a lot of great underground and older artist's though.

Gangster rap was kinda over-done back in the 90s and rarely contained any lyrical subject matter, although I liked political message people like Ice Cube, 2Pac, and N.W.A. had in their early careers. New age rap is kinda pointless too because it's just essentially electro mixed with R&B but the singer decided to take a break from actually singing.
