idk if you ever heard of LFA 34, supposably the worlds greatest lobster fishing area. but up here at the first of the season i know people who cauhgt 15000 the first day hauling, with 375 traps. are season is 6 months long, but when the water gets cold alot of people haul up there traps for the winter. then put em back in the spring. until the seaon closes the last day of may. the bosta herer are alot bigger and have open sterns.
@sologrimz jeff's boat is a 36 foot crowley-beal built in milbridge, maine at jim beals boat shop. to have one built today will cost well over $100,000.
thats good money, i wanna get into the lobster business i live up north, idk much about it my family owns a large woods company and i was gunna get into that but there just isnt any money in it anymore.
Respect and honor for the passed Captain. He was a lucky and fortunate man to have enjoyed a life by the ocean in maine. I believe you've really made it as a man if you've become the captain of your own boat. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of this man. Just knowing this makes it hard to watch the video, but he was a such a good fisherman that its a joy to watch.
@chmartin3412 , yes Jeff Tolman passed away in 2006 from heart problems, leaving behind his wife Ali and baby daughter Bella, and much family and many friends. RIP cap.
Well. Maybe your a new breed. Let's hope so. Because most lobstermen are making a killing and all they do is complain. It's no more harder than a lot of other jobs and you guys are very lucky to be on the water all day. If the cod ever make a recovery you will appreciate what you have more.
just installed a turf tennis court on this island, very nice place but a little too secluded for me, fun for a few days though, great lobster rolls at the Gawker
i lobster fish with my dad on pei our boats name is Just Another Payment II we have a totally diffrent set up we have wooden traps and we dont messure the lobsters stright from the traps we put them into pan and mussure them during and between bunches we also have 7 traps to a bunch and we have all 7 on the wash board when we run them off
I fished (lobstering and seining) with my grandfather and uncles out of Stonington from age 9 to 17. Our traps were still made out of wood, and we'd spend the winters mending them :)
I moved away for a while, and really miss it every day. I can't wait to get back home to the Penobscot Bay.
This is some of the hardest work on the planet, but I've little known such freedom.
i fish out of phippsburg maine i love lobestering. i did have a bad experiance dragging a block broke off the deck when we were pilling up yhe doors and the block came around and broke my leg.
Good vid 5/5! I love fishing and hopefully soon I'll be out that way! Looking to move out NE to Maine, Currently in TN so nothing but fresh waters for me =\
What is some good reading material for lobster fishing as this is something I would like to get into.
wow, awesome vid! i live in yarmouth maine, out on little john isle. i started lobstering off my 15 skiff this summer, it is great. would you guys recomend me gettin a hualer and block? right know im gettin my student and im goin to be running 30 traps with just my arms.
depends on how long you plan to lobster...a hauler and block are kind of expensive investments for someone who is hand hauling 30 traps, but if you plan to haul more...ur allowed 150 w/ a student license. I hand haul 80 traps in a day...i think you're alset personally
start hanging out with the local fishermen at the closest pier. than just hang out there and help them out a little, then just ask if they want a extra pair of hands. good luck its a ton of fun!
Its easier that way. You have everything sorted out before you put it in the tray to get banded, thereby only handling the lobsters once (twice for the legal ones). It also gives you more time to fill bait bags and band between strings. I'm guessing you haul and dump one pair at a time. We haul 5 pair and then set them back, or in the late fall we are on 10, 15, or 20 pot trawls.
This was an awesome tool for us to use during homeschooling...my kids are studying lobster fishing in their textbooks and this made them feel like they were right there with you. Thank you for sharing your work.
I LOVE this video, Adam!! It really warmed my heart to watch it...I'm so glad that there is video footage of Jeff out to haul...I'd love to have a copy sometime!! Thanks for posting it!
Nice video, looks like he was a good guy.

All fisherman are greedy but lobstermen are at the top of the list. Ask one. They will tell you.
