The people in the Portland Ghettos and skid row are not discriminated against though. They are fed like queens ands kings.

looking to move there but getting impression from people ive spoken to that i could have a rough time due to my appearance...im more of the dark electro/industrial ilk, but i could see someone visually lumping me in with the neo-hippie crowd due to my long dreads (14+yrs natural, not those trendy ones kids make and take out)...hearing of a major hippie stigma out there that could keep me from getting work that i could get around here just fine...just saw portlandia too...is it really that bad?

@lestermagoo u think portland is the greatest cith I have ever lived in. As far as acceptance everyone is accepted here. There is a great transit system, no sales taxes, and there are alot of charitable people here. As far as jobs go I think oregon is 49th out of 50 states in unemployment. When i was on train to New York i met some oil guys on amtrak. There is a big oil boom going on in North Dakota right now. If you really wanna job I would go there.

Well Portland does have the dubious reputation as the being "whitest city in America". And thats just census data, not racism. But even if the homeless population is the highest per capita, nationwide, I lived there for almost a year, from 2007-08 and still think it is in the top 5 coolest, friendliest cities on the west coast, hands down. I am not saying the entire city of Portland is ghetto. I am refering to shopping cart alley, tweakerville, burnside, st francis, TPI, sisters of the road, St. Juans, Colombia river blvd, and most of the southeast is meth addicted. Then go over to the east side around 11th and pine thats shopping cart alley. Washington is a shit hole also. I was discriminated against big time in Yakima Washington. I was called everything from spick to a terrorist. I guess the man killed in front of the sisters of the road cafe was just a rare murder in Portland right?

@hopezain Well I am not sure about all of Oregon. I know this for a fact though. racism and any kind of discrimination is frowned upon in Portland. However sometimes you get hypocrites. example mayor Sam Adams is a openly gay guy. However he discriminates against the homeless. There are a few blacks and whites from other places I heard using racial slurs, but mostly keep that to themselves. Sometimes the natives get drunk and talk shit about everyone but mostly people get along.

St Johons, Parkrose, Gresham, Clackamas, Gladstone, All places I lived in the 90's. Love my home. Been away since 97 and coming home soon. Leaving the navy after I return from Afghanistan.
