  • Justin, if you are reading, I want to sincerely thank you for the style you use in these instructional videos. After a year of studying your acoustic material on several songs, I just picked up a Standard Telecaster and just whipped through the powerchord videos.

I know different styles mesh for different students. I've surfed all around the net and taken some formal lessons. I keep coming back for the biggest bang using your stuff.

    THANKS!

  • why is he playing an F#5 as an F5....it's not the same chord I'm confused?

  • Nice!!

  • what would u recommend for a good/cheap distortion pedal ? btw, ur an awesome teacher ,thanks.

  • @ShadowBandit64 check out the equipment section on his website, lots of great stuff.

  • thanks so much, amazing and useful videos

  • i can strumm some of ´em but my fingers need to be stretched a little more coz some of ´em sound a bit .. crappy ;P but THX justin , youre a great teacher ;]

  • I just bought the power chord program Music Coach Rock Powerchords, you developed and link to on you site. I've had a quick look and I'm sure in a few weeks I'll be playing power chords with the best of them; or at least quite well. With the current exchange rate it was less than $8 US or CDN, which is a real bargain at less than the cost of a magazine. To be honest I was amazed at how good it was. Just my way of saying, "Thanks, Justin."

  • is it common to use your middle finger to mute the 6th string if not used in the power chord instead?

  • how do we strum powerchords up/down? PLEASE HELP

  • It's hard to explain but when you're playing a power chord you need to kinda angle your index finger so it's still fretting the note it is supposed to but is lightly touching all the other strings so they are muted. Then you can strum all the strings without the open strings ringing out and you can strum the chord up/down much easier. Hope that helped.

  • It helped a lot! Thanks!

  • if you learners are into power chords now i advice you check out bands like Gojira and Lamb of God, heaviers bands like them tend to have alot of rythm using power chords and octave chords :)

  • best guitar teacher on internet!

  • @metalGodSlipknot david taub is way better

  • thanks now i noe why when i strum my power chords the 6th string sounds open coz i didnt use my brain well good

  • ive been playing guitar for just over a year now and power chords were the one thing I always skipped over and were always afraid of. so for the last 3 weeks ive been putting all my efforts into power chords and it's amazing how your fingers just "click" into the familiar shape.

really getting the hang of them now. THANKYOU JUSTIN FOR THIS AND ALL YOUR LESSONS! i think i would have given up a long time ago if it wasnt for you :)

  • I'm just getting around to learning power/barre chords and I seem to be having trouble with my hand "binding" on the neck, i.e. I can't seem to strike a balance between releasing my grip enough to slide while still having enough pressure to have the notes ring out clearly...I feel like it would be easier if my hand slid easier...is there anyway to treat a guitar neck to make sliding easier, i.e. chalk? baby powder? Any suggestions or am I going to have to suck it up and just find the balance?

  • spit on your hands and on the neck and your hand will slide just fine....heh..just kidding...

try applying just a little pressure on the strings, so they're all muted. then easily, while strumming the guitar, apply a little pressure, 'till you hear the chord clearly. IF you apply too much pressure, the chord will sound crappy...

    cheerz!

  • JUSTIN you are really good techer one suggestion, plug a graph for your finger possitioning when youare playing chords , i am trying to guess at your chords(i am a beginger) so you can still teach advanced styleing.

  • this was exactly what I've been looking for! this helped so much, the muting thing is brilliant for sound control, don't know why i didn't think about it before..

  • He did say rubbish.

    We love you, Justin.

  • Useful stuff. TNX!!!

  • lol he said rubish

  • cheers mate your the man!!!

  • or instead of muting it with ur thumb or index u can lightly touch the string with ur palm... i find its easier

  • if you mean muting with your the palm on your strumming hand, that would make it pretty awkward and you might accidentally mute the 5th string. But whatever works best for you.

  • the root note for smells like teen spirit is a F power chord not F#

  • Excellent post as usual, by Justin.

  • Muting with thumb is an option yes... But it's much faster and easyier with your index finger. Btw if you want to play powerchords you sould keep you thumb behind the neck, your hand has a more natural form then and you can mute the high strings easier. Powerchords are actualy barre chords with only the 3 or 4 lowest strings played. You can better keep your hand like you are playing a barre chord. It will make it easier

  • you can play a barre chord with your thumb.Jimi Hendrix did this and John Frusciante to.:P

  • oh we are so smart. Ofcourse I know that... but those aren't the power chord chapes... It has nothing to do with what I said. If you play a full a-shaped barre chord (not the hendrix or frusciante trick) you try not to hit the lowest string, or you mute it with your index finger like with the power chords on this lesson. You try doing that with you thumb... In that case you have the same shape as the power chords. But it's much much harder then the index finger mute...

  • hmmmm...usualy I play a A shape barre chord muting the lowest string with my index.but after I have read your comment I tryed it with my thumb a few minutes ago and it was as easy as with my index.but I still play powerchords and A shape barre chords with the index muting the E string.

excuze for my english,I'm from Roumania.

  • It's possible yes, and you can use your thumb for it. I know that and i agree. But just the comment about the hendrix style barre chord.. It has nothing to do with the power chord shape :p

  • I know.but you can use the thumb at a lot of things on guitar!

  • ofcourse i mute evry open chord with my thumb :p

  • I to.

  • thanks a bajillion! I was playing my A root note power chords really slow and timidly because I didn't know about muting the 6th string, thanks!!

  • Its alot easier to mute the low E with your thumb

  • i think i disagree. if you were to play a bit faster it would seem like bringing your thumb around to the low E would be more of a hassle.

  • is it okay to mute the E str. wit ur middle finger?

  • yea mute it

  • jajaja, el demonio de tazmania...

  • Hey Justin I just wanted to mention that i very much appreciate your teaching, it's working perfectly for me. I just bought my first electric guitar today, and I love to bash those powerchords!

    Thanks from The Netherlands!

  • Yep E5

    E--x--

    B--x--

    G--x--

    D--2--

    A--2--

    E--0--

  • Err i got a question? Is the e power chord on a 6th string root note just an open 6th string??? So open 6th string, 2nd fret on 5th string and 2 fret on 4th string??? Please answer! Cheers!

  • I think that if you're going to do an E power chord on the 6th string, you'd have to move your index finger all the way down to the twelfth fret. Otherwise, your best bet is to go for an the open chord E or to find another way with the 5th root or 4th root (those, I can't help you on. I only memorized the 6th root.... kinda).

  • try open 6th string in 2nd fret,closed 5th in 2nd fret. kinda like ac/dc power e style

  • wayne ne

  • it has more views than part 1

  • there's a page of his website for requesting songs. try asking there.

  • sweet guitar. i always wanted to get a tele style guitar.

  • One of Slipknot's guitarists uses a telecaster. Seriously.

  • yeah but its a piece of shit because it has emgs and its a teleceaster. their whole band is shit.

  • emgs? lol strange. i cant see one of them playing a tele for some reason.

  • good to see you again

  • hey, you are back... :)
