I love this piece. I first saw it at Collaboraction's Sketchbook and it has been in my mind ever since. I am going to see the CHF performance of Laika this Saturday at the MCA. I can't wait.
I love this show and have always been fascinated by the story of little Laika! I saw the latest iteration of it with the chorus of children and think that it adds to the emotional impact of the piece. Bravo Red Moon!
oh god. this is such a blast from the past. i havent seen lika since the sketchbook. i remember sitting backstage and listening to this music every night. beautiful frank
Come see the newest version of "Laika's Coffin" in The Twin Cities, MN at OPEN EYE THEATRE this weekend March 26th-March 29th, 2009! DONT MISS this beautiful, lyrical, mysterious and hopeful "Suitcase Opera". I HAVE SEEN WHAT NO ONE HAS SEEN...!!!
I unfortunately have not gotten to see Laika live but the video makes me eager and hopeful that I will sometime in the future. What a story and such a beautiful way to tell it. Are you guys doing it around Chicago again anytime soon?
Thanks to all those who came out and saw the new, improved rendition of LAIKA'S COFFIN at the Great Small Works Festival in NYC last week. We had a blast! Keep an eye out for Laika as she may be preparing to show up again in the not-so-distant future! Until then, Commrades!
UPDATE. Straight from Chicago, "LAIKA's COFFIN" is set to perform during the last weekend in May 2008 as part of NYC's "GREAT SMALL WORKS TOY THEATER FESTIVAL" at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn. Tickets are still available. Come enjoy of this much-loved spectacle-opera-in-miniature.
LAIKA'S COFFIN is pleased to be having a limited run in NYC this May 2008 as part of the "GREAT SMALL WORKS TOY THEATER FESTIVAL at St. Ann's Warehouse, Brooklyn. Tickets are available online. See it if you can!!!
This video doesn't do the play justice!! It's so difficult to put live theatre on a little screen. Still, Laika, you are so beautiful and sad. Bravo to everyone involved.

Awesome puppets. LOVE the music! Beautiful voice! Who wrote the music and who's the lyricist? Actually, where can we find more info?
Thanks for sharing the vid!

This was definitely my favorite piece at sketchbook '07. I'd love to see it live again.
The new puppets are awesome.
