We've got two of us here snappin' & tappin' as well, this is the year my mom was born! I've made 110 playlists for the music of every year back to 1900.
A trip back in time is waiting, from Sousa marches and Joplin rags to new age and most everything inbetween.
Dang, the quality on this recording is fantastic ! ! ! ! ! !
I learned this song (including the intro verse) from an old QRS player piano roll, with the lyrics printed along the edge. A lot of old piano rolls are now being scanned, converted to MIDI, and archived, to preserve them before their acid-based paper disintegrates.
You can purchase this song on CD from Amazon or download it directly from them as well. It's included on the CD "Fascinating Rhythm - Great Hits Of The 20s." Performed by Johnny Hamp's Kentucky Serenaders.
I think the still at 2:20 is from an almost silent movie called "Our Dancing Daughters" with Joan Crawford at her most flapperiest. It was silent, but had popular music and crowd scene noise put into the party scenes. One girl who tries to fool everyone that she's not a flapper eventually falls down that flight of stairs and dies.
I think I recognize the couple at 1:22 from the Onion's Our Dumb World'. Caption:' In the 1920s, the economy was booming, jazz was taking off, and eight out of 10 Americans were homosexuals'.
not on this planet. first off, there would never be a poll about that in the 1920s and second off Mr Kinsey's estimation that 10% of the population was "gay" has been discredited. his book was published in 1948. Freud was correct when he theorized that sexuality was purely mental energy. anyway, it's seems to be inappropriate to be flying the flag at this blog. don't mess with the 20's.
Recorded in July 1926 [three takes were simultaneously issued], and primarily released on Banner 1796, along with Domino 3772, Jewel 5048, Oriole 688, and British Regal and Imperial releases as well...
240252, Joe Candullo is highly under-rated today. He had a fantastic unit. I have a version of this by Candullo on Banner that arrived with a large crack in it-never got to hear it~ 'til now. Thanks-it's great! Regards, J.

This is the music that makes dancers out of nondancers.

Great rendition- the tempo of a number of other recordings seems a little slow-but this one is right on- makes me want to learn the dance!

The song is just a jazzed version of the song 'Doing the Varsity Drag'.

And to think that the older folks were scandalized by this music...lol I'll bet some of them secretly liked it.

I was hoping this recording would have a "Vocal Refrain" (as record labels from that time period say), but alas, none.
"They call it Black Bottom
A new twister
It's sure got 'em
And oh, sister
You shake your hips
And do a raggedy trot -
Hot!"

a whole cast of fun characters chiming in.
