  • I really like Lakland, but at least in this video, the Fenders have a richness that is missing from the Lakland.

  • What a fantastic bass player, that Lakland doesn't do perfect impersonations on it's own but it comes damn close. With some EQ adjustments it would be almost spot on.

  • If you are a hot player, you'll sound great through a Rogue 3 string bass!!! if they had one. :-)

  • Lakland are great basses, period .I had them all..Stingrays are great but are toomuch in your face, jazz basses are everyones perrenial favorites.lakland are great contenders!

  • People are too partial, which is normal. In a blind tes I'll bet Lakland does them all exactly in tone.

Be open minded, be true! :-)

Laklnad is an exceptional bass! period.

  • Lakland sounds too sterile comparing to these three basses.

  • I like those sounds in seperate basses more than all in one Lakland

  • 4:42 starts the real thing!!!

  • Ok it is simiar with Jazz Bass and Stingray. But with the p-bass it has nothing to do with it.

  • Bartolini's made Lakland, not LH3. I prefer the barts than the laklands pickups and pre

  • I have a 4-95 mapleneck and I love it, but why does he start with saying that lakland wanted to have something more of a signature sound, and then spends the next 6 minutes showing us how ´much it sounds just like a J - P - M bass? Yes its versatile, but with versatile comes anonymus - I bought mine to be able to "copy" the 3 standard bass-sounds, but I could never pinpoint a Lakland on a record. Is has no signature sound.

  • in comparison to the two fenders it is an awesome piece of bass! but against the musicman it loses the fight ;)

  • does anyone know which fender jazzbass that is ??? i wanna have it^^

  • @ThePeace0815 Circa 1978 Fender Jazz bass, Antigua finish.

  • dang! really close sounds. the amp your using also helps to make it sound more awesome!

  • Finally a good bass player with precise timing and fine touch demoing a bass! That helps a lot. Thx.

  • Not sure if this has been covered, but can you, or someone, post the (approximate) preamp settings that delivered these tones? Sounds great btw. Thanks!

  • lakland sounds cleaner to me for some reason

  • this bass is just right and has its own voice

  • Musicman Musicman Musicman !!!!!

  • Fende & music man forever is no articulation on this lakeland is only more agressive nothing else

  • Fende & music man forever

  • too many eggs in the basket if you ask me, this bass is like a multi-effect pedal, you might get more varitey but it can't REALLY hit it.

  • i wanna have the fender

  • P bass is amazing

  • This guy is SUCH an awesome bass player.

  • what mid freq setting do you have?

  • How is he picking that percussive triplet in first groove?

  • If this lug is going to be played on-stage you'll hear no difference but in studio I'd rather prefer those three oldies..imho

Yes, he's a killer I can't get some skills he does have )

  • It's almost there... but not the same...

  • The original basses sound better than the Lakland, but it's pretty amazing that one bass can hit all those tones comfortably.

  • hes a killer bassist!

  • This was filmed awhile ago, but any idea if the preamp was run flat?

  • Lol, I have my headphones in and I was looking at another page while listening to the first sound sample, and didn't even notice a difference....thought it was the same bass

  • all the basses sound great, as they should. My personal fav is the jazz bass which has been my go-to bass for just about everything i do. The lakland for the most part gets close to just about all 3. If you need all 3 distinct sounds lakland is the way to go without carrying around 3 basses and you still get that lakland sound as well.

  • Wow, the Lakland comped the Jazz bass tone FAR better than I ever would have thought! (I haven't gotten the chance to really try out either their USA or Skyline models). Less so with the Precision, but more than enough to get by on a "one bass" gig. It's 'Ray tone is somewhere in the middle, but I've found them to be very "finicky" - even StingRays that have aftermarket pickups installed lose something elusive yet essential to their tone. I'll have to seriously give a Skyline consideration...

  • love jazz bass

  • That's all real ,I have 55-02 deluxe

It can do a lot of sounds.

I will post a compare video ,too.

    As soon as possible.

  • This video makes me want a Antigua jazz a lot

  • Can anyone explain what settings are being used for each of the comparisons?

That would be really, really useful. I must say, between the P-bass and J-bass, the sounds are almost indistinguishable. However, the Musicman sound definitely sounds a little thinner on the Lakland. Still, I have a 44-02 Deluxe and it still remains without doubt the greatest thing I've ever bought; a really amazing instrument.

  • My 55-02 covers it all. If you can't find your desired tone, It doesn't existe.

  • I have a Lakland 5502 Skyline Deluxe from 2002 with Bartolini. It sounds great! You can get a tons of tones out of it, and the neck is a dream!

It is so thin, and really easy to play!

I have had a Lakland 5502 Standard with LH, but didn't really notice any difference in sound... only in neck, because the 5502 standard from 2008 had a thicker, heavier neck.

I don't know if it is a difference btw Standard/Deluxe models or Bartolini/LH models...

But what is sure I like the Bartolini tone more! :)

  • I have a 44-02, deluxe I'm pretty sure cause it's got the pickguard, and sounds amazing with the Bartolini's. I actually have been doing the 3 bass combination for a while. Something I love is the neck side of the bridge pickup. That's nice.

  • lakland do have power

  • This is the next guitar I'm going to get!

  • Good video. The Lakland definitely holds its own, although the Pbass and Stingray definitely can not be replicated.

A stingray is a stingray, and you'll never get the Pbass thump out of a Jazz Pickup.

    Very good sounding bass regardless.

  • Music Man and Jazz Bass ... BEST SOUND EVER!

  • theres also this vintage 70's p bass sitting right in my school! it needs some repairs but it's 100% vintage, paint is seriously coming off though, but still its awesome, i wanna steal it XD

  • omg when he did the bridge pick up groove with the jazz bass and the lakland, i was like, Jaco Pastorius sound!

  • This guy looks so much like Malarky from Band of Brothers

  • i think i like the music man stingray the best.

  • I've had all of these sans the Lakland. Have sold them all due to my G&L L-2000 USA fretted and fretless. None of them touch the G&L's attack and nastiness. I'm negotiating a purchase of a 44-02 right now, and if I get it I will due a video comparo of the two.

  • For the doubters out there...get yourselves a hold of a Lakland and play it at high volume at a gig.

I have owned good examples of all the basses on show in this video...my Lakland blows them all away in the live environment - including my vintage Stingray & Precision.

  • @alembicbassguy I agree.. cuts through like you wouldnt believe

  • this shit is expensive

  • gettin one:]]]

  • I'm impartial as I don't play any of these brands, but in my humble opinion, the musicman knocked the other basses out, which is interesting.

  • I would agree this vid doesn't do the lakland much justice. Go see a band that uses one live (death cab, wilco, etc) and it's quite different, perhaps due to model too...One curious question is also what all of you are listening to this video on.

  • I think lakland sounds really similar to the jazz bass, but it is very "middy" in comparison with the the P-bass and a little thinner than the Stingray.

However, I love this Lakland bass

  • Didn't really do the Musicman justice for fingerstyle funk... He needed to dig in more, or turn the treble up a tad.

A musicman like that normally has a fantastic finger tone.

Atleast the slap tone sounded true to a musicman.

Also, why is the pickup cover white on the Musicman? Is it not a Musicman factory pickup in there or something??

  • Another thing to remember is that the Lakland is brand spanking new, it has not been 'broken in' yet. The Jazz, P Bass and Stingray all look about 20+ years old, and their tone has has evolved over this time with the woods and electronics 'maturing'. I'd reckon after a few years the tone on the Lakland would be mean! Only one way to find out... I'm gettin' one!

  • i can barely tell the difference... theres atleast a little difference... not too much difference

  • i think the fender jazz sounded best. i'm suprised Lakland actually released this promo. both Fenders had better low end than the other two. keep trying Lakland,

i like your style, and your basses.

  • Yea I thought the same... I've never heard such a nice jazz bass.

Mind you its probably some rare vintage worth 5 times as much as the Lakland... :\

  • the p bass sounded alot brighter than the lakland.

  • I think the Musicman sounded the best overall. I liked the bottom end of it and the Lakeland had more mid tone sounds with what it sounded to be unwanted distortion.

  • The distortion is coming from the camera.

  • Regardless, the Musicman was night and day difference from the others and made me sit up and take notice, when the others were like blah blah blah...

  • Wow! So it's three old fart basses in one!

  • sweet tone! ***want***

  • Pretty convincing demonstration to be fair. The Lakland has a great tone and range of sounds!

Another bass worth considering for covering these types of sounds is the G&L L2000 - wonderful bass also!

  • The Stingray's slap tone is incredible - and the Lakland sounds great. Wish I could afford all 4 basses...

  • It does a pretty good P and J bass tones but not so much the Stingray's slap tone.

  • Im not happy to say this but IMO lakland sounds better than MM only. Not happy because i thought its better than fender.

  • WOO stingray owns all! lol

  • Cool! I've been looking at Laklands for a while now. Might have just convinced me to buy one. The P bass and J bass tones were pretty close, but I felt that the Stingray tone was thicker than the Lakland's bridge pickup...

Either way, maybe replace the bridge pickup or throw in some more bottom and see what it does if you really wanted to fix that. I'm still impressed with this thing either way. 5* for your playing too.

  • I wish I can play like that LOL:)

  • Oh yeah, me too. :)

  • cool

  • he did the same slap riff as the slap riff on the lakland website

  • It's the same player.

  • That's a hell of a good commercial for lakland, I gotta go try out everything!

  • Can someone that ows this bass tell me what are the positions of the 3 way switch ? I know that one its for Bridge pickup on humbucker mode and the another its for bridge pickup on single coil mode, what about the next one?

  • Second single coil mode(second coil is used).

  • Not that the Lakland sounds too sterile or hi-fi, but I find that the 3 other classic basses are still irreplaceable.

If I were to compare this to guitars, it's like owning a PRS Custom 22 with a Trem bridge to replace a Strat and Les Paul.

I honestly think the solution is owning all four basses. :p

  • wow! i really didn't think i would hear any big diference but lakland has a really clearer sound.

  • my dear lord this mans got pocket!

  • I'm not a fan of jazz basses and stingrays but I am sorry to inform you, but judging from this demo the jazz and stingrays kick an ass on this new Lakland. Just my ears and my oppinions only. 5 stars.

  • This Fender Jazz Bass is Amazing!!!

  • i want it

  • I agree with erikmilan1987's comments. I have a 5594 Delux with the Bartolini system. I still prefer my model. It may take a bit of eq to smooth out the "spank" on the top end, but for slapping it's amazing.

  • hav u got tab for that 2nd piece?

  • sick bass playa

  • mi sono costruito un basso che suona uguale al suo skyline

  • Sounded much too thin and honky compared to a P-bass.

  • That was sick the guy sold me I might get a skyline

  • This Lakland is a very versatile instrument, but it does lack of some properties of these 3 classic basses. The jazz bass was very similar because it's a 70's jazz bass and it shares some wood similarities, the p-bass was not similar because the pickup of the p-bass is wired in series and have an alder body, the lakland neck pu is wired in paralel and have an ash body so it sound less thicker, and the stingray was pretty similar because it shares same woods but theres some low end missing

  • Comment removed

  • The Lakland didn't match the P bass as well as it did the J.

  • both were good to my ears

  • I really think the Jazz Bass and Stingray tone sound best for obvius reasons (pup Configuration) but the stingray tone is lacking some low end...i geuss you can dial that in trough preamp so i guess it can pretty much do everything EXCEPT a P-Bass...Those basses might be the simpliest out there but the hardest to imitate through other pup configurations...

  • man i dug those older lakland models with the bartolini's...not a fan of the new electronics...may i add that the stingray sounds the best...my godd

  • alot of people are saying theses basses are the new fender. there great playing and sounding and they can pretty much fool u into thinking that they are fenders. but im not a fan of active electronics

  • Overall lakland does a great job in covering the sound over the other basses. And for those die-hard Fender or MusicMan fanatics , no two basses sound exactly alike, not even , Fen vs Fen or MM vs MM.

  • Overall, I really like that Lakland. ej2eugene said it best though, each of those old basses has their own amazing vibe to it that can't be imitated through this Lakland. The Lakland gets 95% there, but that's as good as any bass other than an original Fender or Music Man will get.

  • are laklands good for slap?

  • that pbass is totally pimp.

  • Haha, the Lakland can do everything the other ones can, only not as good. The question to be asked is; is having the convenience of all those sounds in one bass worth losing the pure quality of having multiple dedicated basses? I don't think so, maybe you do.

Also, I just wanna add that that guy has some sweet skills.

  • Don't forget about the player! He has some mean chops.

The Lakland is missing something from each sound. The Lakland sounds like the Lakland, and that's a great sound, don't get me wrong. I just don't think it replaces them.

I'll say it again, great bassist. But I think each bass has its place, including the Lakland.

  • That old Stingray makes my heart ache.

  • that better mean u love it cuz its a fuck of a lot better than any fender bass

  • You sold me I'll see you at NAMM!!!!

  • I think lots of these imitation companies Like this Lakland,And other Like Sandberg(Which i really like) is that you can make allmost any sound you want which make it so versatile in comparision to fender and so on, though fender is and will allways be some of the best bass equipment outthere .

  • hehe, Lak sounds similar to original J,P and MM basses, but, hey, they are all have their unique character. Lak sounds great and versatile, but Fender J, P and MM - they've got their own spirit that can't be imitated 1-1!

  • Overall a pretty good imitation of all 3 " classic " basses. But nothing can come close to the feel and sound of an early 60's J or P Bass. I'll have the single coil hum any day.

Mind you...the Lakland " Joe Osborn " bass is fantastic !

  • JazzBass 100000000x better sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow he nailed those sounds pretty well.

  • Three cool basses on 1 vid! I now want to get all three!!! Antigua J-bass, also cool.

  • Not only the bass has a design-head, the man too!

With all that arranged facial-hair, and take of that cap idiot!

  • the fist bass was the best!

  • great playing, loved that little clicking pop thing...lol

  • Did he just play some tina marie? haha

  • im useing this vid to decide to get a fender p or a warwick jazz

  • id say depends on you genre, i got my warwick so i want a p bass now lol

  • I have both, the stingray and a Lakland

    Lakland has a different tone,

IMo, the lakland cant beat the Stingray , IMo

The lakland has a thinner sound on the MM Pu

  • Also factor in that the Stingray has a Maple fretboard

  • it had the jazz tone, the p bass tone was a bit more rangy and it did not have the stingray tone.

  • I'm not convinced. this lakland bass tried to emulate all 3 basses and fell short

how is that unique trying to sound like another bass?

you can't match the sound of fender or stingray

    great playing though

  • The goal is not to copy the sound exactly, but to have a versatile bass usable for different styles (instead of using 3 different basses on stage). The sound can go in the direction of these three originals, but it can't replace them for shure.

    Cheers

  • plus, with both pickups at full this bass has an own voice, pretty modern and very punchy, great bass for sure.

  • The Stingray and the Lakland don't sound alike when slapped. I thought the stingray made a better sound slapped, IMO. Other than that, it was dead on the Jazz bass, and fairly close to the Precision.

  • Very nice. I will definitely go for Lakland!

(But keep in mind: It's an "advertising", everything is possible in a video.)

  • its pretty impressive. But nothing can compensate the feeling, when you own a bass like an old Fender P-bass. These old instruments got soul :)

  • nice

  • From this video the bass does seem versatile but it's noticeable that it's got a little more mid-range than the other basses. It didn't sound as full than the others though, which could be a set-back for some players i guess.

  • Wow that must be the guy that records all those Lakland clips on the official site! :D

  • it is

  • Comment removed

  • funny.... i didn't know that stingrays were passive

  • Most of them aren't. Actually, I think they were the first basses to have active electronics.

  • no...they weren't.

alembic were the first to do it in 1969

  • they have passive pickups and a active preamp

  • gotta love the internet with noone picking up sarcasm. the original post was meant for 'handidrummed' who stated that all 3 basses were passive

  • They sound very close but the Lakland to me sounds more "flawless" and sterile due to its active electronics. I much prefer the tone of all 3 passive basses.

  • not THAT close. nice though

  • That's a 44-02 isn't it?

  • The info to the right says it's a 4-94, so guess it's not a 44-02 ;)

  • sure lakland has a unique thing to it, but u can't just say it's better than a p-bass, jazz bass or stingray

  • Sure I can. Mine feels better than any American Fender I've picked up in recent years and feels and sounds a LOT better than any Stingray I've ever picked up. But I'm biased because I think the rays sound terrible to begin with.

  • Yeah, it can sound pretty much like the jazz and musicman but i find it less mellow and musical than the p-bass. i guess its subjetive though..

  • yo quiero un lakland!!!!

  • And Läkland yet again proves they have the 'tastes-like-chicken' bass. It can sound like anything on the market, except Läkland..really doesn't have an own sound to it.

  • The settings for the "imitations" are at the extremes. You've got almost unlimited possibilities inbetween the settings that sound unique in their own right.

  • True, but it still won't sound like a Läkland. It doesn't have a unique sound to it. That's not a bad thing per se..I just don't like it =)

  • it can never sound EXACTT anyway, since theyr different basses :)

  • anybody still knows the name of the first slapriff he plays? can't remember where i know it from

  • They have it as the audio files on the Lakland website under the slap riff...

  • Oo that sounds really close.. but you can still hear the difference lol

anyways I perfer the musicman.. soo nice to play lol

  • The Joe Osbourne does sound like a Jazz bass and the neck feels better along with hotter pickups.

  • omg. they r very close ! but fender is better i can hear :) but very close...

  • impressive

  • I agree it's no exactly the same, but to me it doesn't have to. I love the Lakland's sounds! I love my 55-02.

  • i prefer the P-bass

  • The lakland leave the fenders and musicmans far behind ! LoL

  • When i listen to the last one, it was totally different..

But Lakland's sound is really cool~

Actually, first fender jazz is best of best..

  • I agree with you, the jazz bass had a totally awesome sound !

  • Great playing! Still sounds like a LAkland to me. I could spot it a mile off. Very rich glassy tone but somehow not as vibey as the old fenders

  • the Lakland was really good imitating the Fenders, but the Stingray imitation was'nt very realistic. good enough though.

  • Close, but no cigar

  • Thanks for uploading this video ! I saw it a while ago, but it was down until now. Great demo !
