  • The Yardbirds' live shows were not neatly rehearsed or tight once Paul Samwell-Smith left. There is a kind of earthy raggedness here that is quite appealing. Keith Relf sometimes sings out of key and there is the odd guitar fumble here and there but who cares?

  • thank God Robert Plant came along.

  • I meant NOT showing Jeff on the Shapes Of Things guitar solo

  • this camera man should be guillotined for showing Jeff Beck on the Shapes solo.

this is priceless just the same. Jimmy looked like he was having fun though!

  • Page slappin' bass!

  • Astounding the archives that surface! You got to admire the insight and expense to capture this. Back then, portable video and audio were only to be had by TV studios

    Thanks for the upload

  • Too bad the camera didn't focus on Beck/Page? when the solo was played.

  • Beck's solo on "Over-Under" was the benchmark for aspiring young lead guitar players to mimic.

  • rooster 2:29

  • I was a teenager in the early 1960's and couldn't sing like the Doo Wop groups, but when the British Invasion hit, I was right there with my guitar playing lead and and singing lead vocal too.

It was a great time to be young in high school and college playing at all the dances and later having the audiance just watch and listen with the sweet smell of grass all around.

  • Too of my favorite Yardbirds songs, and Beck and Page together too!! Wow!! Thank you for this clip. If only the sound quality was better but you can't have everything.

  • 5 white Yardbirds. These dudes must've had white summer in their collective heads.

  • Ive collected Yardbirds audio/video for years and this is indeed, quite rare. Page had to replace the recent departure of Paul Samwell-Smith, so he became their bassist, for a short period of time. @ Asmorgan88, you are wrong on 2 points. Zep WERE billed, several times as "The New Yardbirds" - including the show at Surrey that they first performed as Led Zeppelin. I have a pic of that flyer, if u need proof. And Relf definitely doesnt suck - sorry that u don't appreciate him like u do Zep.

  • Keith is the reason why I like the Yardbirds. Not knocking anyone else in the band of course. But LOOK at him, he is too beautiful for his own good. And I just love him more than any other musician.

  • very rare beck and page era yardbirds

  • back then they didn't have the greatest P.A. systems. so bands didn't always sound at their best during live performances.

  • They put Page on Bass.

That proves that there were way too many drugs being consumed...

    LOL

  • @luvthatzeppelin Not necessarily too many drugs but in my opinion Jeff Beck was the better of the two guitar players. Of course this is my opinion as I am not a Zeppelin fan at all. Now talk about drugs goin' on...............

  • Keiht is fucking, very sexy and beutiful

  • keith relf is cute

  • Amazing !

  • Keith Relf is fucking horrible...

  • Vintage Relf...good stuff and thx for vids...where did you get this stuff?

  • Relf's voice is not real choice here, but the rest of the band is pretty fine. Page on bass always kills me to no end-what a hoot!

  • as a young band one needs a PA. in other words one needs to amplifi the drummer-- see this vid, any body been near a real drum kit knows how bleedin loud a real drum kit is.

  • The Yardbirds with original members Chris Dreja & Jim McCarty on US tour in 2010; May 21 Montgomery College Robert Parilla PAC Rockville MD; May 22 Chesapeake Blues Festival Annapolis MD; May 23 Tangiers Akron OH; May 25 Sellersville Theatre Sellersville PA; May 26 BB Kings New York NY; May 27 YMCA Boulton Center Bayshore NY; May 28 Showcase Live Foxbourgh MA; May 30 Remember The Music Remember The Heroes Festival Virginia Beach VA.

  • This is rare, the Beck Page lineup didn't last long sadly.

  • I clearly remember this band from my teen years. Nobody, noway, nohow, ever matched this band in the combination of pure musical talent, power and intensity (in spite of personnel changes). My pick for the best British band of the early 60s. These guys were hot.

  • Some good drumming by McCarty on this one.Not in Bonzo's league, but decent.I can see how this morphed into Zep 2two years later.

  • ...Not in Bonzo's league, indeed!... ;-)

Well because, perhaps, they are very different drummers stylewise!... Still, I kinda see what you mean!... ;-D

  • I wouldn't say this morphed into Zeppelin, being that only one member from The Yardbirds was in Led Zeppelin, Jimmy PAge

  • It did morph. Led Zep's original working name was "The New Yardbirds" and they were doing a good deal of the Yardbirds catalog until they'd written enough of their own tunes (putting aside the plagarism suit they lost to Willie Dixon) to put phase out the older material. They actually only changed the name after Chris Dreja threatened legal action.

  • @dantean

Led Zeppelin, or The Yardbirds for that matter, were never billed as, nor did they ever perform under the name "The New Yardbirds".

"Led Zeppelin" did a brief 12 show tour of Scandinavia is 1968 under the name "The Yardbirds".

Upon returning back to England is when Chris Dreja sent them a cease & desist letter to stop the use of the name.

Also - they weren't doing a "good deal" of the Yardbirds catalog at first...maybe one or two tunes. Set lists from then confirm this.

  • The pre Led Zeppelin! Awesome!

  • Uhh, the Yardbirds weren't the pre-anything. They were the band that spawned Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and countless other worshippers. Calling them the "pre Led Zeppelin" makes as much sense as referring to one's dad as the "pre-me." The analogy holds--their ain't no Zeppelin w/o one, the only, the original--The Yardbirds!

  • Keith Relf - Only one lung and had asthma - Heaven knows why he played the harmonica!!!

  • Love for Chicago blues.

  • beautiful !

    Serena

  • Awesome!!!

    Grandma mary

  • Don't believe it--the film crew had the chance to film the Beck/Page era lineup but had no idea what they had, so they focus on the bass during the guitar solos and the sound emphasizes the vocals and drumming!!!

  • i couldnt hear the guitar that well

  • Keith Relf sounds like he was quite drunk (not the first time or the last, from what I've read about him). His health problems certainly didn't help.

Relf, when 100%, was quite a good lead singer. Maybe not Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey or Robert Plant level, but definitely better than, say, Freddie Garrity. :-D

  • I think Relf is better than Mick Jagger by a mile.

  • @KeithE4

what's the pooint? why? what the fuck does your evaluation mean? that you have knowledge??opinion? YOU'RE THE CHRISTAGAU OF yOUtUBE? INSTEAD OF A DICK? SHUT THE HELL UP. that a nobody from palookaville can judge who is best or better? for fucks sake, just enjoy this timeless music and shut your trap. This bnd existed at a certain time and produced a timeless sound. There is no best better or whatever.

  • Jimmy looks like he's ready to BUST out bass and all!♪♫

  • Thanks ever so much for sharing this!

Vintage footage of the great Yardbirds live in concert-so rare! R.I.P. Keith!♦♫

  • Nice drumming by Jim.The Yardbirds were the 60's most underrated band.Had all the pieces, just terrible management.

  • Jeff played that landmark lyrical solo in Shapes. Not Page! He is twice the guitarist that Jimmy is!

  • It's easy to underestimate the impact of that solo decades later. At the time it was indeed a landmark.

  • Agreed, and I didn`t really realize that they both played in the band for a short time before Beck left. This is a great video besides the fact that the camera man was a moron and focused on the wrong guitar during the solo.

  • I love the Yardbirds! One of the best and, unfotunately, most underrated bands from the history. And they had three of the best guitar players in the world...

  • 60s were the best time of my life, when we were all free, still have many singles of this fantastic band, rock on bro

  • The Yardbirds, que fantasticos ! Y pensar que de ésta banda nace Led Zeppelin de la mano de Page.

  • this is just me, but i think that bass player really has potential. I wonder what he did in his career???? ;)

  • Last I heard he was working on something called a "lead zeppelin".

  • Lol.

  • 1966, and the YARDBIRDS, could it have been any better---{wished I had been older then--but not as old as I am now} !!!!!

  • Same here lol! I was 3 years old in 1966-born too late to appreciate all those great 1960's bands.

  • Leave it to the camera man to not focus on Jeff during his solo. That close up of the guitar is Chris Dreja. Shapes Of Things must be pretty new at this point because Relf seems pretty nervous at parts. Page playing bass reminds me of when Ron Wood played bass with Jeff Beck.

  • WOW WOW The 5 live yardbirds with Page playing bass!! Actual live footage too! Page switched to 2nd lead shortly after this and a short while later Beck left.

  • wow page on bass it would be for 3 months though

  • his worst 3 months ever

  • nice

  • Awsome performance and look whose playing bass!! Can anybody guess?? That's Jimmy Page...If nobody knows the Yardbirds were a prelude to Led Zeppelin...Thanks for the video.

  • no really
