I didnt mention this on the vid, but the hardware is pretty modest, geforce 6600 gs, 128 MB of vid ram, where as I heard tremendous amounts of vid card memory are needed for vista, not to mention a top of the line graphics card, and again, I was running this @ 2560x1600.
Virtual desktops have been around since the days before Linux (+10 years ago), in windowmanagers like NEXTStep and FluxBox.
Microsoft (bet ya forgot them, huh?) had also taken interest in the ideas presented by Project Looking Glass, and later by Apple, and have been working to add their own spin on the 3D desktop idea to Windows Vista.
Later on, Apple, decided that they'd take a page from Sun, and have their new OS run a 3D-desktop. They called this Aqua.
The folks at Novell saw this, and decided that they should do likewise. So, Novell announced an early-alpha version of their own 3D-desktop environment, known as XGL/Compiz. This is what he's showing here.
good lord, the level of ignorance is staggering here.
Let me set you straight. All this started about 10 years ago at Sun Microsystems (yes, them), with their Project Looking Glass initiative, which was the first (very unstable) implemntation of a 3D desktop. It was meant to run under Java, but it never ran very well, because it used Java. So, that got put on the back-burner.
another linux video another mac fanboyism... I think you mac users should get out of the box and stop giving credit to all those lies that steve jobs tell you, "Spaces EXCLUSIVE on a mac!" that is total BS you all know that, and that is just the beggining... Get smart people.
whether it with kernel design, driver architecture, or gui ... linux is always copying from someone else - eg bsd or solaris or osx etc
the same is true for windows; the only difference is that usually linux does not do a bad job copying; somehow microsoft always seems to screw up its rip-offs :-)

dont support novell by using XGL and COMPIZ
USE aiglx + Beryl !!
Its better in every way, honestly.
tamrix 5 years ago
Don't think that will be possible anymore, since Beryl is merging with Compiz.
Not that I like it, either.

Thats true now, but i didnt post what i said above 3 months ago around the time when novell made that partnership with microsoft

GPU is for graphics, why not use it for drawing?

WHOA CPU usage is below 10%! Okay, no wonder since the video card does all the work. Wonder how long till someone develops a videocardtop.

has anyone heard of Luminosity which was done by Owen Taylor much before Aqua came out. Compiz is the usable version of luminosity

"dude - if u DONT want to wait 5-10 years to do cool stuff, then get ourself a mac & see it done right the first time!"
Wait for what? Do you see this guy waiting or playing? I see this guy playing, you gotta be blind or something.
XGL/Compiz does so much more than the features he showed though.
By the way, Sabayon is a really great linux distribution, it's kinda the ubuntu of gentoo.

Have you EVER used Linux?
You know Spaces on Leopard, they got that idea from Gnome/KDE on Linux.
Not to mention Slide show Wallpapers, Tiger also copied that from KDE on Linux.

the sad thing (about these poor linux souls) is that they dont know an original idea from a fake!
these features (aqua & expose) have been part of mac os/x for a long long time.
