It's always nice to see classic experiments in action beyond the text.
This comparative task by Piaget was another of his methodological flaws. Try asking the child to select from 3 possible answers: 'more', 'the same', 'less'. Thus, the child is merely forced into an immature interpretation of the question as one that requires a superlative answer.
Psychology is so interesting. It's my favorite class and seeing how a child's mind develops is fancinating .. thanks for the video. it helps because actually watching the test being done is better than just reading it in a textbook
I had to laugh about subjecting the poor children comment. My sister is an educational psych. I'm not. She did this with her child at 4 and then at 7. It is so much fun to see their stages, I'm going to do some tests with my just turned 7 year old to see how she fairs. (maybe too with my 9 yo as a "control") It's not like they are being electrocuted. It's a developmental task that they use for evaluation.
So, I'm the four-year old in the video (it was taken 16 years ago), and I'd just like to say that neither me nor my sister were 'subjected' to anything, I remember it being a lot of fun... there was cheese and jokes involved! And my mother is a college professor--it doesn't get much more professional than that. And, of course my sister came across as smarter than me, she's three years older! All that being said, I hope you all enjoy this video and learn something from it.
If you watched all the way through you would notice she mentions to her kids that they should say goodbye to her students. Plus what difference does profession play when the tests are all the same. I do not hold that degree, but I could do that experiment, and end with the same results of Piaget.
i got to wath this vedio because this related to my course,,, anyway, the vedio looks very intrsting and on how the different stages of child answer and reasons out the Q being asked,,, its soo funny,,,,
Merci Hourya
Great job but maybe next time you should test them individually as they could have distracting each other and peer pressure may have occured. But good study. Very interesting!

I could not have asked for a better example of conservation to share with my early childhood math methods students. THANK YOU!

Poor kids!
It sucks that their mother subjects them to this crap. This should be left to pros...

Till what age does a child has this perception? Is it till 6?
Abduallah1990 3 years ago
A child acquires conservation during the concrete operation stage which is at ages of 7-11.
