Missing the part when Bret tossed Austin. Similar to the 1995 Rumble (when Lawler kept mentioning "BOTH FEET" throughout the match), Jim Ross almost immediately points out "yeah but the referees didn't see it!", totally giving away the finish of the match in the process.
JR did something similar at the end of the Montreal Screwjob -- he said "you want to talk about controversy" immediately after the bell rang. Made it so bloody obvious that he was part of the screwjob plan all along.
Even though I do love Stone cold this was a real shit ending and in my eyes this goes up as one of the worst royal rumble's but sure start of 1997 to mid wasnt great in wwf.
stone cold ugly bastard got his azz kicked by bret in wrestlemania 13 so burtally. bret kicked him so badly. even this royal rumble he won by cheating . liar peice of shit raises his hand after the rumble.
This trick gets used to death by heels in battle royals these days. If they don't sneak back in after being eliminated, they fake injuries only to come back in the end.
I don't know why you people say Bret would've won this Rumble because Undertaker and Vader were still in the ring legal also. Mostly likely Undertaker would've won this Rumble if it was fair.
Undertaker got screwed out of this Rumble win, he got eliminated illegally by Austin. Undertaker would've eliminated Bret Hart and Vader to win it. That's ok though because Undertaker beat them all at the next ppv and went to Wrestlemania and beat Sid for the title anyway.
One of many screw jobs that Vince did to Bret Hart. He really buried Bret Harts career and made it hard for him to be a good guy and then made it hard for him to be a good bad guy and this was just a prime example. He even got screwed in 96 during the Iron Man match with Shawn Michaels. Bret Hart got screwed at Survivor Series 94 in a match with Bob Backlund. He got screwed at Survivor Series 97, the most famous of them all. He is the most screwed wrestler of all time.
LOL I remember almost crying watching this. I was only 8 and Bret was my favorite wrestler. Little did I know that later Austin would become my favorite wrestler of all time.
What was so amazing about this was, even though it set up the "Cry Baby Bret" angle which culminated post-WM13, as a Bret Hart fan you could totally sympathize with where he was coming from -- I mean, he DID get screwed!
Not long after this, Gorilla Monsoon - the on-screen President (sort of like a GM role) - brought out the "replay footage" and declared Austin, Taker, Bret, and Vader to face each other in a 4-way match. I think Undertaker won that match (hence why he went up against Sid at WM13).
@CasualVideoGamer Actually, you are right...up to an extent. What happened was on the Thursday Raw Thursday before the PPV, Shawn Michaels "lost his smile", and the match ended up being for the WWF title. Bret won the title by last eliminating The Undertaker (who was subsequently named #1 contender for WrestleMania), and then the Hitman lost the title to Sid thanks to Stone Cold.
@Tubewings I see. I didn't become a fan until around August of 1997, so I missed out on a lot of the "middle ground" between RR and WM. I don't even remember reading much about it between this time. I do remember reading about Shawn "losing his smile," and such though. Thanks for the info.
When I first saw this, I couldn't but start laughing. Of all the clever things to do, I always thought this was the most clever to book an angle. Even moreso, it was Bret - Austin's long-time rival - that eliminated him and if Austin hadn't snuck back in it seemed like Bret would have won. I love this kind of booking - has so much working towards it.
@stingflyer the referees got distracted by al snow & cactus jack i believe & bret hart tossed stone cold over the top rope & hit the floor but the refs didn't c he came back & won by cheating, i like stone cold & i have respect 4 him but sumbody got 2 agree dat is cheating
World Wrestling Federation and World Wildlife Fund have been settling the issue to use "WWF" in court for years. It was eventually decided for WWF to change their name and World Wildlife Fund to change their's to "World Wide Wildlife Fund."
Vince saw this as an opportunity to further progress the industry as more of an "entertainment" business (like TV sitcoms) rather than a sport.
Well no, the commentary fit the situation perfectly actually. If you haven't seen the rest of the match Austin was actually eliminated, but the refs were too busy trying to break up a fight on the outside to see it. So Austin jumped back in before he was spotted and won the match. This was back before Austin was considered a good guy so the announcers weren't going to be all giddy about him winning.
@aussie4life05 Well, they were confused. Austin was already eliminated, and the refs didn't see that, so they were puzzled. I've always hated Vince Mcmahon as a commentator. :p
@aussie4life05 Don't Worry Shawn Michaels Was't in this RR Match cuz if He was He can also WIn his 3rd RR match ! You saw 2010 RR Match HBK said he have to win But who Eliminate him at the end do you or anyone think that Batista Eliminate him ''NO'' The God is the one who Eliminate him not Batista or anyone !!! and always Gos Eliminate him at 2003,2005,2006,2008,2010 yes not in 2007 !
@aussie4life05 well Austin was a heel at the time, and had been eliminated in this match already, except no one saw it, so he re-entered the ring and eliminated everyone, including Bret who was odds on fav to win at the time. Vince's reaction was pretty much the reaction I had when he won.
Of course none of us knew at the time what a big star Austin was going to be so right now looking back, your comment does indeed seem justified :)
@aussie4life05 ... this was one of the times Hart was SCREWED. It wasn't in the script for Austin to lose... he took advantage of the opportunity of his favourability and did Hart in. Well documented fact!
When this happened, I was really mad at the referees and really angry at Stone Cold. I never knew at that time, that Stone Cold will be the man who will usher the Attitude Era.
AND IT BEGUN!
