@mattyblast Neil Hefti - from the album " The Atomic basie" - the greatest recording session ever, of any type of music. On "Whirlybird" we have the greatest tenor solo by Lockjaw Davis. . I did once ask him about that recording, and he told he was called at the last moment for the recording because one of the tenor players was ill.!
I'm gonna take a guess that since this is a slower tempo, then that is probably why. I've also played the song and it's great and all but doesn't have the same kick as a faster song with a bigger shout chorus...even though this one has a nice one : )
Still though, I agree that a little interest in the music by the performers would probably make this 20 times more entertaining.
yeah i know, but i mean like im 12 and when i tell my friends i listen to jazz they're like ew and whatnot. so idk, the world hasn't forgotten, but its just so like....under credited.
I play bari sax, and personally, I love this song, because I also play trumpet in this song, I do a few of the solos when I'm playing bari. This song has to be one of my favorites.

A grand piano would have actually made quite a difference...still it's a really good interpretation of Count Basie's unreached piece.

sounds like someone ran over the recording with an 18 wheeler on new years eve

My high school band played this better than them. This just sounds lazy, and not in a good way.

my highschool band plays this song better than them. I feel like they aren't really passionate about it.

the music's actually not bad. quite nice to listen to, but why do the performers look so bored/serious?

They point their bells into their stands because it deflects their sound. What are you in 5th grade band?

I used to play drums in a similar band; we played it with some more ''bite'' in the arrangement, but this band is good...
Syd Lawrence's version is still my favorite, though.

the solo sounds just a little lacking energy, but in general the band played really well. Excellent bass player and drummer
And what happened to the 1st trumpet after 2:00?
