That said, it's amazing that even a short couple decades later, Corporate America would shit a brick if a fan even considered jumping fom the stands onto the field. My how things change *cough* we're all corporate puppets *cough*
I was at Tiger Stadium when they burned the disco records and all it was about was hating disco music and doing something radical. That's it. Real simple.
@kiniwahine Really cause my parents told me it was about racism against black people. I only see white people on this field burning something that originated from African Americans. This was all about racism and sexual orientation. You white people hate anything that is different from the norm and try your best to destroy it. Disco never died and still lives to this day. Disco inspired R&B, Soul and Hip Hop.
@MiddleFingerToTheSky Black people invented every modern invention. Black people created the concept of zero, black people wrote the theory of relativity, they also discovered calculus and gravity, radiation, and nuclear physics, they were also first in flight (the wright brothers were Black!), which is why if you look at Africa today it is the most advanced continent on Earth!
@bishop102 First off my comment wasn't for you, so why are you responding and second i don't have time for your kkk, nazis, white supremacist shit. Good Luck with your life.
@MiddleFingerToTheSky I doubt it was about bigotry although I'm certain some in the anti-disco crowd were racist or homophobic or both, most of them just hated the music either for it's image in popular culture or as a bland corporate product that was mass marketed and overhyped, or they just didn't like the music. I can understand your point of view, as Disco was symbolic of Blacks, Latinos, and Gays at the time but I don't really think they were the true target in my opinion.
Shortly after destroying the disco records in their collections, young white disenfranchised males would go on to replace them with records by Night Ranger, Survivor, Poison, Journey, Def Lepard, Warrant, Van Halen, REO Speedwagon, Rush, Stryker, Kansas, Styx, WASP, Motley Crue....' nuff said.
What an epic day for me. I'm fortunate to have been there, and to this day, I still have my "unlicensed" Insane Coho Lips t-shirt. (sorry Stever) I also caught an actual Coho that morning along with a 24 lb. King out of Waukegan. At the game, the guys behind us kept buying beer for me and my 2 friends. Not a bad day for a 16 year old. If only I had gotten laid, it would have been the perfect day. Coho...Coho...Coho
Disco represents happy music thats why you see people smiling when they dance to it!
Back then there was alot of HATE goin on against minorities (Black Hisp Italian)
of whom loved Disco!
If you hated minorities then you also hated anything that they had love for!
The majority, NOT ALL of ROCK listeners but the majority of that demographic were haters who were not feeling the concept of feeling good and feeling happy and dancing in rhythm to music!
@Bonehead175 Comparing this to a Nazi book-burning is as ridiculous as it is offensive. Of course there was racism in the late 1970's. That doesn't mean this was about attacking "black" music. In any of the interviews, signs, or anything else on this derby, was there ever a reference to anything to do with race? No. People were just tired of hearing disco saturating the air waves, which YOU would know if you were alive back then.
@Bonehead175 LOL...just because I choose to protect my identity online doesn't mean I'm not American, or that I wasn't alive during the disco era. Not a single thing you just said has anything to do with this demolition derby. I never denied there was racism during that time, but THIS event had nothing to do with race. You have no evidence that it did. You're making false, baseless accusations because you want to see racism everywhere, even where it doesn't exist.
I pray that at a state fair there should be a Justin Bieber Demolition Night where they take all the Justin Bieber albums that people brought, put in a giant box and blown up real good!!!!!!!!
Well let me add this i was watching a documentary on the longest-running legendary T.V dance show "soul train" Don Cornelius mentioned as well during the time disco came on to the scene they really didn't know what to do i'm not trying to put race into this he said the best thing to do at that time was to try & find the best black disco records & play them as we see the disco music artform took the 1970's by storm even though it lacked some musical talent people loved it or hated it.....
@owg59 I Agree i grew up during the 1980's & 90's i know the "gangsta rap" back then was great music back then was good no matter what genre you listened to at that time ya'll gotta admit it too i have nothing against old school gangsta rap i was raised on the R&B Hip Hop/Rap scene if they would do this to the sucky-ass gangsta rap now i'd would be for it i don't give a shit about gay ass 50 cent, Lil wayne, nicki minaj, etc rap now is pure shit that's all it is IT'S SHIT!!!!!!!!!!
jeez, 3 major entertainment/news/sports reporters all in 1 video, A&E's Bill Curtis, CBS's Greg Gumbal, and the late Gene Siskel..3 legends in 3 different news fields..amazing..
Who's brilliant idea was it to let this hair-brained idiot detonate a bomb in the middle of a baseball field at the peak of the season? Steve Dahl was an idiot, sure, but there had to be some dim bulb who greenlit this thing...
I confess, though. The madness of the whole scenario is making me laugh.
I'm confused as to why everything has to be about race. Maybe Steve Dahl wanted to burn disco records because he didn't like the beats, studio 54, the dancing, the drugs, or the culture that went along with it. It doesn't have to be about gay people or black people. Maybe, for once, it's just about the music.
i truely belive this was a racial thing.Disco was soo big that white ppl had to do this rally because of the fact that they cant dance and disco mostly had a black and latino sound and at the clubs thats mostly what u would see anyways.rock music got soo left behind that even rock artist had to jump on the bandwagon which was pathetic and all sorts of ppl who had no business doing disco.everybody was has there own taste in music so let ppl like what they want to like and GET OVER IT.
Racist? Really? So why did racist whites turn to R&R during the 1950s? Afterall R&R is a direct outgrowth of R&B and Jazz which as every afrocentrist will tell you, had their roots in west africa. Moreover, disco died shortly thereafter, why do you suppose that is? Why didn't disco continue with blacks and latino's, why did Motown soul music get a new life?
@phaethonkirk To be fair, The White Sox averaged 6000 fans for a Thursday Night Game. For this event they sold 52,000 tickets. I'm not defending anybody's actions, but the numbers speak for themselves.
I would gladly do something similar to all annoying pop music albums from late '90s onward, but instead mulch them with a tub grinder (A machine used to process wood waste) rather than blow them up.
I think what some of the who people are claiming this whole thing was racist or homophobic or whatever are forgetting is that disco basically RAMMED DOWN OUR THROATS for awhile there. You couldn't get away from it. Even people who nothing to do with disco were being forced by their labels to make disco records. You had rock, country, blues etc artists making records that their fans didn't want to listen to. That's really why the whole "Disco Sucks" thing came into being.
ah, the great american past time. and by that i'm refering to intolerance and the need to burn things you don't like not baseball. disco stu hates baseball.
I disagree that this was about race or sexual orientation, although I can understand that observation due to disco originating from black, latino, and gay clubs. I think this was primarily about class. By 1979, disco was seen in the popular consciousness as the music of the "in crowd", a velvet rope society of long lines and arbitrary admission to clubs like Studio 54. That's certainly where a lot of punk's rage came from, and I wouldn't doubt that it played a role in the rage at Comisky.
@Beck19781 And yet S Dahl dressed like a Nazi before the game while he was collecting Disco records to blow up. It is a Nazi inspired burning, not of books, of course, but of records. It was attacking blacks, women and gays, threats to fat white dudes like Dahl.
@Lynx69100 I must confess that I know nothing of Dahl. I was commenting on the emotions and reaction of the crowd, not of his intentions. Dahl's comments on 3:28 are very telling. He jokingly mentions a 3 piece suit, gold jewelry, and being a "cheap skate". So, yes, I think this was about class. By 1979, young people who missed the "revolution" of the 60s became angry that society and their heroes (i.e., Jagger) seemed to go from free loving hippies to self-indulgent egoists.
wow, mind-boggling stupidity... whaddya bet most of these dung brains owned LPs by John Lennon, David Bowie, Queen, Pink Floyd, Blondie and the Rolling Stones, all of whom not only admitted to liking disco but even recorded some of the top disco hits of the era.
@verdadeiromarcotron Yeah it has nothing to do with the fact that Disco was the worst, most horrendous music genre of all time. It's always about race and sexuality. Always
Many R & B records were blown up. R & B is not Disco. Many people enraged by the time took the opportunity to show their racist side. I believe that the thought of Steve Dahl was purely anti-disco but not everyone thinks so.
Disco is still great and should beat the shit out of the people responsible for this the cops should shove their sticks up the djs ass for burning such great music. U mean to tell me u would rather listen to Bieber and other crappy music of today? Im telling this to everyone
I bet they wished they hadn't destroyed all that quality music now. As the modern music just aint the same and never will be. Disco was a great era , it was fun happy and far better times than now. Disco is and was the best.
@AUTORECOVERYUK i like dico but i prefer the synthesisers and gimmicks of the 80s but the disco fan in me washappy when pary and club music started to become poular aian tthen i relized i t ws just that disco was great for being fun but also have persinslty by have tons of elements of jazz and blues
Disco was a victim of its own success. "Disco 77", a live dance show broadcast from Ft. Lauderdale in the summer of 1977, actually had very listenable playlist, but "Disco Magic", the show's successor one year later, didn't come close to measuring up. Too much had happened after "Saturday Night Fever" went viral; suddenly everyone, including rock stars and even country stars, had to record a disco hit. The quality of disco records accordingly took a very sharp nosedive, and it never recovered.
What about a Lady Gaga,Justin Bieber, pop music,Rap music demolition night. Seriously as one who grew up in the 80's i listened to rock/metal,but now Rock/metal is no longer around, there must be something to bring it back into the spotlight!
The people who keep saying, "whats wrong with disco"? weren't around in 1979. the AM radio stations were saturated with it. It wasn't just the "cool" funky horn based songs but lots of string based generic studio songs that were getting old. People were tired of it. Even some of the rock stations on FM were playing disco records or in some cases changing formats. Its not that all disco was bad, but two much of a good thing gets old in a hurry.
@patrick9648 Well, I think the stupid clothing/costumes that went with disco is largely at fault. Would have been totally different if people just wore bluejeans and polo shirts.
@patrick9648 out of curosity was it as bad as music is now? has modern music always sucked even the the 70s? (in terms im 20 and hate all of it and hated to top 40 for quite some time)
@Chriseycarlyeah324 The early funk bands with the horns were pretty cool, but when it became popular the record companies began to water it down and over-produce everything and it just got old. I still think the 70's music was better, but we don't seem to remember the bad stuff. Just like today. we complain about the annoying songs on the radio. but out of hundreds of songs out today, a handful are pretty good. We were saying the same thing 30 years ago
@Gmancrap I'm nearly 56 years old; a few years ago, I had to do a "focus group" on what a really good classic rock station should play.
I couldn't buh-leeve how utterly awful this "music" was, and to me, what was worse was that none of peers in the room had advanced much to bigger, broader and better musical horizons; they still, well into middle-age, considered this "music" as something artistically good!
Say I'm starting a rebellion called the ANTI POP ARMY! I'm looking for more members. Check the vid out at MegaJacob325/ANTI POP ARMY. Oh btw,..... POP SUCKS! LONG LIVE ROCK!
Lady Ga Ga CD Demolition Night! Katy Perry CD Demolition Night! Death Cab For Cutie CD Demolition Night! Is anybody with me????? If so, leave me a comment!
Wait a minute, this guy pulled this stunt twice before and both times before it ended in a similar scene and nobody stopped to go "does anybody remember 10 cent beer night by chance?" ???
If this happened in philly, this would be talked about for ages and ages. Throwing snowballs at santa is a brutal crime but this is just tossed under the rug? And people wonder why Philly thinks they get a bad rep.
A lot of the records brought to the game weren't even disco records, they were just black records, Marvin Gaye and so forth. This wasn't a rally about anti disco, this was an anti-black-music rally, another accepted demonstration of racism in America. But disco never left us, it is the mother to Hip Hop and House.
@clonecomanderfox i hate no genres of music i can find the good in all also moder n dance music is kinda a step back from disco as we lost the jazzes bluezish eklemenbt of persinality most good disco had and what did we gain autotune
@priyonjoni This had nothing to do with "black" music. It was a backlash against the over-saturation of radio stations with disco music, and in this case the conversion of a popular rock station to a disco one.
@mjax1111 In interviews that are on youtube, there were people present at that event that witnessed, that not all the records brought were disco records, majority was just funk, r&b and whatever other black records
@priyonjoni Sounds very vague to me. How many witnesses? How many records did they see? How could they possibly have seen the "majority" of records brought to the event? And why should we believe them over people like Dahl who quite clearly made the point that this was a backlash against a musical trend and that it had nothing to do with race?
@MrBennetzen shut the fuck up pussy. Grow up and stop saying shit about Bieber. He makes more money and gets more girls then you ever will. Stay jealous and fucking retarded
It's ironic as the haters here were the rock lovers, who themselves originally got backlashed over their own records. Check out a clip called "Anti Rock 'n Roll racists", where after a few seconds of Little Richards' Tutti Frutti plays, the DJ stops the records and says, "Rock 'n Roll has got to go, and go it does!" The 78 record (shellac breaks easily) is thrown hard and broken into pieces. And the rap/hip hop haters tend to be the disco lovers!
Disco was being stuffed down the throats of everyone in this country and while some did love it, others were tired of Disco Duck and other countless entertainment vehicles marrying themselves to it. Comiskey Park did get out of hand but anyone who took part in this being called racist or Communist by someone is flat out absurd.
@margirl1980 and who the hell are you to say that genres of music (related to cultures, primarily related to Africa) should be destroyed? Who the hell do y'all think y'all are? The audacity...*smh*
@MegaJacob325 I'll see your Miley Cyrus Demolition Night and raise you a Teen-Pop Demolition Night from 1998-Present or even a Justin Beiber Demolition Night!
All the people was tired of plastic music... and one of the hottest band of the world sold his soul in May 23 of 1979 releasin' an horrible disco-oriented album called Dinasty.... what a shameee!

Harry Carey- Can you hear me out there? Holy Cow! What say we regain our seats, so we can play baseball again?

Imagine if they had Justin Bieber CD Demolition Night.
starsfan92 7 months ago in playlist US Recent Past
Disco was a victim of its own success. "Disco 77", a live dance show broadcast from Ft. Lauderdale in the summer of 1977, actually had very listenable playlist, but "Disco Magic", the show's successor one year later, didn't come close to measuring up. Too much had happened after "Saturday Night Fever" went viral; suddenly everyone, including rock stars and even country stars, had to record a disco hit. The quality of disco records accordingly took a very sharp nosedive, and it never recovered.
supersporkspank 7 months ago
What about a Lady Gaga,Justin Bieber, pop music,Rap music demolition night. Seriously as one who grew up in the 80's i listened to rock/metal,but now Rock/metal is no longer around, there must be something to bring it back into the spotlight!

It's so ironic from a country which has only untalented teen stars to show how modest is the music industry today.
djdano1993 8 months ago
The people who keep saying, "whats wrong with disco"? weren't around in 1979. the AM radio stations were saturated with it. It wasn't just the "cool" funky horn based songs but lots of string based generic studio songs that were getting old. People were tired of it. Even some of the rock stations on FM were playing disco records or in some cases changing formats. Its not that all disco was bad, but two much of a good thing gets old in a hurry.
patrick9648 8 months ago 15
@patrick9648 Well, I think the stupid clothing/costumes that went with disco is largely at fault. Would have been totally different if people just wore bluejeans and polo shirts.
LEDRavecom 5 months ago
@patrick9648 out of curosity was it as bad as music is now? has modern music always sucked even the the 70s? (in terms im 20 and hate all of it and hated to top 40 for quite some time)
Chriseycarlyeah324 5 months ago
@Chriseycarlyeah324 The early funk bands with the horns were pretty cool, but when it became popular the record companies began to water it down and over-produce everything and it just got old. I still think the 70's music was better, but we don't seem to remember the bad stuff. Just like today. we complain about the annoying songs on the radio. but out of hundreds of songs out today, a handful are pretty good. We were saying the same thing 30 years ago
patrick9648 5 months ago
I see this happening with Lady Gaga

Dreadful Classic Rock.
Gmancrap 8 months ago
@Gmancrap I'm nearly 56 years old; a few years ago, I had to do a "focus group" on what a really good classic rock station should play.
I couldn't buh-leeve how utterly awful this "music" was, and to me, what was worse was that none of peers in the room had advanced much to bigger, broader and better musical horizons; they still, well into middle-age, considered this "music" as something artistically good!
Yuck!
SatchmoSings 8 months ago
Haha, I mean some dig it and I'm ok with that but I just can't stand classic rock. I think it's so boring and repetitive.
Gmancrap 8 months ago
@SatchmoSings KISS, AC/DC, Black Sabbath were 3 big bands around, chances are a lot of fans of those bands are probably there.
Kewln00b 8 months ago 2
@Kewln00b The only rock concert I'd ever been to in my whole life was "Kiss" and I had a terrific time!
It was in New York City's "Radio City Music Hall" and what also impressed me were the fans; they were largely terrific too!
I got really drunk on Irish Whiskey.
Too bad I can't remember the name of the "warm-up" band.

@clonecomanderfox i hate no genres of music i can find the good in all also moder n dance music is kinda a step back from disco as we lost the jazzes bluezish eklemenbt of persinality most good disco had and what did we gain autotune
bigal2k643 4 months ago
@bigal2k643 Go fuck yourself.
clonecomanderfox 4 months ago
@clonecomanderfox um ok why exactly
bigal2k643 4 months ago
@priyonjoni This had nothing to do with "black" music. It was a backlash against the over-saturation of radio stations with disco music, and in this case the conversion of a popular rock station to a disco one.
mjax1111 7 months ago
@mjax1111 In interviews that are on youtube, there were people present at that event that witnessed, that not all the records brought were disco records, majority was just funk, r&b and whatever other black records
priyonjoni 7 months ago
@priyonjoni Sounds very vague to me. How many witnesses? How many records did they see? How could they possibly have seen the "majority" of records brought to the event? And why should we believe them over people like Dahl who quite clearly made the point that this was a backlash against a musical trend and that it had nothing to do with race?

kmklover 11 months ago
It's ironic as the haters here were the rock lovers, who themselves originally got backlashed over their own records. Check out a clip called "Anti Rock 'n Roll racists", where after a few seconds of Little Richards' Tutti Frutti plays, the DJ stops the records and says, "Rock 'n Roll has got to go, and go it does!" The 78 record (shellac breaks easily) is thrown hard and broken into pieces. And the rap/hip hop haters tend to be the disco lovers!

@snoops71 That's right, and with the advent of used Disco records and tapes being sold, Disco is beginning it's ressurection.
JesseLee85719 1 year ago
Disco was being stuffed down the throats of everyone in this country and while some did love it, others were tired of Disco Duck and other countless entertainment vehicles marrying themselves to it. Comiskey Park did get out of hand but anyone who took part in this being called racist or Communist by someone is flat out absurd.
