This the first time it was fired of course its not gonna idle perfectly it has to get the computer flashed or the stand alone dialed in and mapped and on top of that it has a aftermarket cam and supercharger on it that it did not the last time it ran so duh, its gonna need to be dialed in. Cool car dude I hope it doesn't torque steer too bad and throw you in a ditch. You should move the e- brake to a hand lever if its the foot pedal like I think it is, you might need to hang a turn or two.
Hey i have a 1997 monte carlo. i am trying to convert it from a 3.1 to a 3.8 supercharged. i am trying to gather up imformation on what i need. do you think that you can help me out and tell me what i need besides the engine and trans???
kejross- this vid was taken shortly after the swap (w/ other major mods)- and was the first start with the new s/c and adaptor. Never said it was a completed project- this is just an 'in progress' look at how the car was coming along- just figured we should post it up because of how well the cam's lope came across on the vid.
Actually the only difference between the 4T65E (L36) and the 4T65E-HD (L67) are the gear ratios (2.93 for the L67 and 3.29 for the L36) and that the differential is stronger. Otherwise, both tranny's are about the same and hold about the same amount of power. The HD is really only for the diff.
According to a GM tech I consulted when i was considering adding a s/c to my L36 98 lumina ltz, the only thing that those two engines share in common are : the block and the crank. and he said that the stock tranny should be good to handle about 300hp and 300ft/lb torque, anything more will likely cause prematurw failure. And let me be clear by saying I am not an expert, just going off of expert's opinion
They also share the same cam. I was referring specifically about the trannys and was trying to be clear about which tranny went with which engine. To be honest, these trannys really aren't dependable sometimes for even the stock amount of hp. So far my tranny has survived though (non-HD) but I don't know how, lol.
Hey guys, i'm not a mechanic...but a few days ago, I didn't tighten my intake correctly...it came off, and then starting acting up...kinda like your car here in the vid...maybe if you guys put an intake pipe, it would be a little smoother...
Honestly, if I thought it would get this much negative attention on here- I would've cut the video down to just a simple 5 second idle clip- but I figured people would like to see a walkaround of the car. The people that understand the various swaps involved here realize there are a lot of pitfalls and potential problems. For this being my first major car project, and first swap- I don't think it came out that bad- all of the problems have since been fixed, it just takes time to troubleshoot.
people are idiots man, realize that. everyone has an opinion and they always feel like they have to share it even if they have no idea what they are talking about.
@bumpin96monte dude i think the car is sick as hell im building an l67 right now for a 99 lumina(yes a 99 lumina its even granny gold with some rust and faded paint) its gonna be a total sleeper so it can walk all over those punk ass kids an there bone stock mustangs with a flowmaster and an intake lol. oh and what kind of cam do you have it sounds bad ass
The car in the vid is mine- you people need to seriously chill out, this was the first time starting it w/ the whipple swap (those that know about the Animul whipple adaptor know the problems it has)- also the car had stock ve tables, and also had a blown pcm fuse. We took the video to help diagnose problems, and to play w/ Jon's new camera- and we just figured we'd post the video as a quick teaser since many people requested one since the L67 swap.
Many of the problems have been fixed- however the adaptor plate itself has many inherent problems, so I opted to change it completely to fix them. The setup is waiting on a whole list of new parts- one of which is the Yella Terra W-A IC / lower adaptor plate among other things. It is 0* and snowing outside now, so there won't be any new vids until it warms up again. Also, what do you mean w/ the oil comment? it doesn't make sense
Sounds good~ If that thing was running real rich, gREat chances are your oil is a little fuller than before, so it makes perfect sense, but IDK Maybe its not, good to hear its still running!
OIC, honestly that was the last it ran with all those problems. We took it on one short drive w/ most of the problems fixed (fueling was much better), and then the weather went to crap, so its in storage. I hope to get all the new parts on and get at least one good idle vid- it really sounds much better in person
Sweet, Badd Ass BuilD!!! I got a 96 z With a l67 Swap Built up, Im not into fwd's But i Love the Montes! Yours Is the Sickest I think Ive SEEn!!! Let me Know when You Get It out neXT~ I dont have a Camera, OtherWise id Have a Vid or 2, But i Never Think Of it Anyway~ Weather Sux ASS~ I know I has To Sound Badd ass~ mine Does with 3 inch And Flowmaster, Yours Sounds About the same!!
One PCM fuse was blown- so the MAF had no power, and it was running off the MAP only. Since it is still on stock VE tables, fueling is way off in SD mode. Next, there was a vac. leak causing the surging/idle hunting. Lastly is the terribly designed lower adaptor / boost bypass valve setup- it has all been scrapped to be replaced with a much better setup.
I will admit that I'm no ASE mechanic- this engine build and swap was my first major car project ever. Consider how many L67 5th gen montes there are, then how many RUNNING whippled L67s- I don't think I'm doing all that bad IMO. This wasn't meant to be an ASE training video, we were just goofing around w/ the first startups of this engine combo, and w/ a new camera- seriously... lighten up.
You have to realize that was the first vid after the whipple swap (and before I looked into all the problems w/ the adaptor pieces). I just posted it up as a teaser vid b/c it had some decent idle clips in it. Of course it smells strong of gas- it was on a nearly stock tune with a setup that is far from stock- what do you expect?
This the first time it was fired of course its not gonna idle perfectly it has to get the computer flashed or the stand alone dialed in and mapped and on top of that it has a aftermarket cam and supercharger on it that it did not the last time it ran so duh, its gonna need to be dialed in. what is involved in switching a 3.1 with the 3.8 supercharged does the same tranny work do you have to change computers .Please let me know
Kingshti1 2 years ago
You will need the trans for the 3.8 along with the computers.
1slomr2 2 years ago
wrong you will need the computer but the tranny will fit...
trailrider894 2 years ago
trans will fit but the heavy duty trans they put it cars that came with L67 can handle more power and abuse than the trans that 3.1 and L37 3.8 can
