If your thinking of buying a 2002 MX5 be advised this model suffered from Clutch Shudder. Mazda knows about the problem but refused to do a general recall.
@mrblockboii the car's designed not to roll over . low center of gravity so unless the car some how hooked something at some freakishly high speed the car wont roll over . but if it does you are prettymuch fucked.

BUT it just gives you that much more incentive not to CRASH!!!
well true that miata is simply lower than other cars so possibly remain stable during the crash but theres no guarantee that it doesnt roll over.
ok think the situation like this.....what if you were driving narrow 2 lane highway and you see oncoming traffic gets in your lane ahead and you are forced to decide cut the wheel to the right where ditch is at? yes it will goes into 4-5 feet deep ditch and would roll over, wouldnt it?
can see from the video this is a very safe place to be during a crash, the way the sills bend down show that energy is being absorbed gradually and not transferring into the occupants, bravo Mazda
@Tem120 yea but most american cars (like americans) are all talk no action...but this is japenese it should be good.either way i still love the mx5 lol
When I was 18 I had a 1990 miata. I was on a 6 lane highway by my house and the car was hit in the rear from the guy behind me. It jumped the 10 inch median, landed in on commimg traffic, and then I was hit head on by a F350 Ford work van. The car landed in a lawn on the side of the road. I walked away untouched. Only had it 5 weeks and was so upset I never had a chance to drop a V8 into it.
i got 99 mx5, and i was surprised when i finded out, that it got 4 stars in safety... its damn comvortable!!! hopefully i wount need to find out myself how safe it is...
Last month I passed out behind the wheel of my 96 Miata due to a refrigerant leak. I hit a concrete divider squarely at about 50 mph and then got t-boned by another car coming down the road. The only injury I suffered was a cut scalp from the convertible top in the side impact, and a mild concussion. The front end crash didn't hurt me at all. I had no airbag burns, no seat belt bruises, and all I had besides the standard safety equipment was a CG Lock. Though small, the car is strong.
@trashmeign indeed it may looked completly fucked up there but it needs to crumple that much to protect and driver AND lose enough momentum so that it doesnt roll over
I read on the website of Euro NCAP that the body and chassis of the MX-5 remained much as it was when introduced in 1989, but it had no airbags at that time.
@link0587 I have a 99 earliest NB model and it has a passenger air bag.. this is my second one .. I experienced first hadn that the passenger side airbag / driver both work just fine they are surprisingly SOFT!
i ran into an SUV with a delta of about 30mph head on, also to the left half. The SUV just plowed right through me and my car took about two spins. I got out without a single scratch. The passenger, however, broke her wrist, but only from trying to turn my wheel in a last desperate attempt to save us.

@RnB123100 go watch some F150 crash test and remember that sturdy safe truck has the highest death ratio to any car in the US

Thats because you were passed out, the drunk driver that doesnt resist the forces of the crash always seems to live

It's amazing how well this little car holds together in an offset crash... especially in light of the fact it has no roof.

@kyzylDersu well, at least in the US, the driver had an airbag on the early miatas. But no passenger airbag

i've gotten into a crash like that with my 99..

Of course the airbag deployed.
markddyt 2 years ago
did the airbag pop?
korranda 3 years ago
no ... why you ask?
firedemon101 3 years ago 4
it looks sorta like it did at first.
korranda 3 years ago
Front airbags vent the gas inside by design, absorbing energy as they collapse.
arthur84 2 years ago
I know that ... The airbag's gas puffed out at one time. This is why I asked this question.
korranda 2 years ago
@firedemon101 the airbag popped!!
DonBounce 1 year ago
@DonBounce it has an escape for the air otherwise your face will be hitting a balloon and not a soft deflatable pillow of air

@firedemon101 actually, it did because it's supposed 2
