  • I cant seem to keep my middle finger straight when trying to play a barre. If its straight my barre finger isn't on its side. any suggestions?

  • LMAO XD it's fun making fun of Americans even though I am 1...

  • the last part gave me a shock :) lol

  • DAMN my fingers arent long enough for a bar chord....FUUU!!

  • ....yes....i am american.....hahaha

  • Wow... this helped SO much! After weeks of practicing I was finally able to get my barre chord down after watching this video! THANK YOU!

  • hey! vato wyee jew talkin so eh, fonny?...eh??

  • You Americans who don't have the Metric system going on yet haha!

  • Hi Justin. Doo you have in your tub lesson how to play the F & the B chord,

    the simpless way. Thank's. Rick

  • Everytime i try to do this, my wrist feels like it is going to break?

  • MUCH more helpful to watch your video. Thanks!

  • Thanks, what really helped me is you telling me to lay my bar on the fret and then rolling it behind. Now how I'm going to do that in a timely fashion in chord changes, i have no idea!

  • thanks manh...!!! you are awesome...!!! learnt my first ever song "wish you were here" from your videos..!!! keep teaching..!!!god bless ya!!! cheers..

  • why did it half to be Americans i find that racist man

  • @JamesBurton17500 lol americans are racist too, bro.

  • I have learned a lot from Justin, but what gave me my breakthrough (after a year) with barre chords was the "heavy arm" method, within a few hours I could play a B7th and from there I was off.

Try a search for help with barre chords and add "heavy arm." I hope that helps you, then get back to Justin!!

  • at 6:48 WTH IS THAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I did every thing he said to do and it sounded like crap......WHAT AM I DOING WRONG!!!!!!!

  • @TheCyphen How are we supposed to know???

  • @imafairyprincess16 I DON'T KNOW i AM JUST PANICKING !!!!!

  • @TheCyphen haha that made me laugh :P

  • @TheCyphen press down harder on the string maybe and make sure except for the finger doing the barre the only one finger is on one string or else it will mute it and when you do the barre use the side of your finger to get it in a comfortable position and then add your other fingers one at a time to make sure your not touching anything else but the string then in a couple minutes youll be fine at it...hope this helps

  • @666thrashmaster thanks man

  • I love how he says fret... FAHRAIT. Barre the chord on the third FAHRAIT! hehe(:

  • Where's jed

  • I can play it clean but it takes a few seconds to get it. Now to practice so I can just jump right into it...

  • Justin, you are the finest guitar instructor on the Tube. Your generosity has benefitted thousands of guitarists worldwide. Thanks for all you do for the guitar world.

    Cheers.

  • The Tasmanian Devil scared the shit out of me.

  • I want someone with normal size fingers to show how to do barre chords!

  • as much as i hate barre chords, that was a great lesson

  • The E chord is B, E and G#?

  • damn man!! This is REALLY the "ooh-is-this-shit-really-so-easy????" moment I was looking for ! YAY! Justin, you the man, man!

  • dam thats hard, where are the scissors so i can cut some strings off

  • FUCCCK IT!!! FINALLLLYYY!

  • omg u really helped with the "keeping the pressure on the middle of the pointer finger and keeping your other 3fingers dead on instead of tilting" now i can actually play the chord better because of that tip so thank you very much.

  • 6:48 xD

  • GRRRRRR I get the feeling I have unnaturally weak fingers! I also feel the need to kill someone!! It seems that the 2 strings that dont obey me are positioned right under the joint in my finger, making it hard to push down enough to get a clear note.

  • my finger so small ! ):

  • so hard :(

  • Just how much practice can you give this damn chord ? I've been at it in various finger positions with no joy. Im on the verge of smashing my damn guitar against the wall grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

  • @Sheepshaggingtaff At 3:19 you can't see his thumb on left hand. It supports under the neck. It is pressing from underneath & is aimed up toward the headstock. Takes awhile to build up strength in the hand. Maybe start with light strings. Also, your fingers may be too short for the width of the neck on your guitar. I have short fingers, i.e., my index finger is only 3 inches long, measured from the inside up to the tip. I need a guitar that's 1 11/16" inches at the nut & 2 1/8" at the 12th fret.

  • i think the1st finger presses the end 0f the fret right 0n t0p 0f it

  • It doesn't matter about the rolling of your finger etc, it's about applying enough pressure from your fingers in between the frets on the guitar to produce the sound that you want, and not directly on the frets or else it will create a fuzzy sound instead.

  • that little trick of rolling the finger off the fret is PRICELESS...worked like a charm straight away after not getting it right for a whole day !

  • that little trick of rolling the finger off the fret is PRICELESS...worked like a charm straight away after not getting it right for a whole day !

  • Can't understand how someone can dislike this video. Maybe they are just jealous that Guitar Learning can be made so easy...

  • GOOD lesson.

  • Mr Sandercore u have a real gift for teaching.

  • I'm posting this just cos I haven't seen this comment yet. If you're a beginner and you've bought a cheap guitar to see if you're into it, and then find out that you are and try to play barre chords, the reason it might be really tough is that dead cheap guitars tend to have a very high action (strings are far away from the fretboard), which makes playing barres really hard. If after 3 months you decide you're into it, buy the best geet you can afford. It'll make these chords much easier.....

  • 0:45 - thats what she said

  • @unheardtruth whaha lol, that really was kinda like the "unheard truth" there.... didn't noticed it the first time...but you're so damn right..

  • This is freaking' impossible!

  • I've got a question.. When I try to play a barre chord, like a F#minor, the G string ALWAYS gets muted! I don't know why, I did exactly what you told me to do and I've tried different things too but it just doesn't work.. HELP?!?! =[

  • Thanks. Finally got time to do some learning and this helped. If it hurts, just keep practicing. Build strength, flexibility and calouses....

  • FUCK IT, ill get a clamp.

  • 0:01

  • My fingers wont stay straight when I try this, dislocation is the likely outcome!

  • They hurt my thumb a lot. any tips?

  • I can't do a bar chord, what happens is that the thinnest string won't play the right sound.

  • @Gameplay946 With me it's the G string -.-

  • These chords hurt so much to learn!

  • hey man thank you so much i could never figure a bar chord before this thanks a lot mate

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

    CHECK OUT 0:53 !!

    HE FARTS!

  • Holy SHIT!

This just made my guitar-playing life so much easier! You have no idea how much of a difference the 'rolled back finger' makes. Just now i did a goddamn D barre chord, it sounded perfectly clean and i was like "...wut".

  • Not even my tutor was this good. THANK YOU Jus. tp

  • not as hard as everyone has made it out to seem. i've been playing the guitar for about 5 days now and i can play f barre. not too bad. great video.

  • My fingers are too fat and stubby to do a barre chords. I have man hands, not long witchy like fingers!

  • is it suppose to hurt?

  • @CAMERONlouw Only before you have new strength and callouses.

  • I can play my F chord!! woooo! :D

  • I'm struggling with it myself, but perhaps seeing some improvement. Part of the solution is definitely that you need a lot of practice because you simply need to work up a lot of strength in particular muscles in your hand or you can't do it, no matter if you have the perfect technique.

    The H-string is killing me...

  • haha i love his comment about the metric system and americans lol

  • I really cannot do these damn chords! my barring finger is too bony!!!! Good lesson though

  • 6:42 lol wtf is that?

  • i wish I had 9 fingers per hand

  • I still cant bar chords.. so frustrating when the chords cant come out clear.. =( need more practice.

  • there is always one string i cant put much pressure at and it makes the wrong noise, other than that its good. but these barre chords are frustrating. How long did it take to get the hang of it?

  • OMG You're British. AWESOME. Thanks!!! :D

  • Read some comments

Good to know I'm not alone in sucking at barre chords lol

  • bar chords are so hard :( it doesn't help that i have tiny finger either. i'll need alot of practise to master these. thanks justin for the lesson its has helped me alot and give me great tips to get me on the right track. :) thanks

  • I can't get one clear note even when I just try the barre finger, when I add the others it just get's worse. I'll try it a few days and see if it gets any better. Justin is a good instructor.

  • @Hakan625: tnx for the advice...but i wanna highlight that I didn't AVOID "F", nor is my musical range is shortened, I can play it, and this is the way it worked for me. Justin is a great teacher, and he knows what he's doing, but that commenter had my problem so i gave him a solution that just worked for me, i'm not navigating away Justin's lesson rules! music just comes the way is comes:)

  • good job thank you

  • shit takes practice

  • got all the basics down in one week but honestly it's more about which guy can play the chords smoothly cause if they have no feeling then what' the point ha I know my chords are aleast standable haha

  • ahhh why does my wrist hurt so much

  • wow this guy helped me..ALOT those chords are gettin clearer and clearer! keep it up!

  • wow this guy has helped me so much. barre chords are tricky but I think I'm getting them!

  • you're advice really helps!!!

  • this actually kinda worked and i have tiny burgerking hands

  • I'm gonna try this.

  • this man is a legend he has helped so much

  • lol,3:40 all that funny hippie stuff. but all joking aside, that really helped me

  • "For all you Americans that don't have the metric system going yet." Lol!

  • Barre chords invented by some guitar sadist, but I think I've got it, just about got it. Will probably take me 2 weeks to play it completely clean let alone chord changes

  • Barre chords were made by Satan!

  • Thank you so much Justin, your videos are the really best. I was having trouble learning the tricks on how to hold all the strings with the index finger but I got it after your explanation. =)

  • thanks for the tasmanian devil. much appreciated.

  • i hate barre chords!!!!!!!!

  • Barre chords suck. They make me feel like my hands weren't put together properly. lol

  • "Now you can see to wave and do stupid dances and stuff."

    OMG

  • Both funny and very helpfull video. Been practising on my barre for some days. I think Ill get there. :D

  • this video was a huge help. I got the whole barre chord business down thanks to this. I also enjoy your subtle bits of humor and accent.

  • Kynirasho. I'm really not good at the guitar, but what I found is that I stayed away from bar chords for the first few weeks i was learning. And only learned the easy chords first. I played LOADS of songs with just those chords and after I got super used to them I decided to try barre chords again. And its WAY easier. Somthing about playing the guitar loads helped my fingers learn how to bend right, and it was alot easier to play the harder chords.

  • this chord is pure evil and painful

  • We shall never give in to the metric system! Never! USA! USA! USA! USA! Come on everybody!

  • good teacher,...but the monster scareded me!

  • this helped me alot... thanx...

  • you're a great teacher. im still having trouble with the barre though, cant get all the strings to ring. mainly the 'b' string. oh and the third finger. guess its a strength thing though. thanks again

  • thanks so much!!!

  • ugh! when i'm just trying the bar alone i gan get every string to ring out except the G string >:|

  • @ilicktubesocks1

if u can't get ur G string down .. that means ur middle finger is not pressing the string properly . try and get the A, D & G string down first before u place the barre .

  • Th Metric System yet?

  • Great advice. Thanks to you and that Peter Vogl guy I now know how to do this properly.

  • Very well presented lesson. I still can't play a barre chord for toffee! But it's a very good lesson.

  • great 5*

  • u are amazing! thank you so much, I mean I learned how to play with your videos

  • YOUR THE BEST

  • omg this helped me soo much thank you!! ive been playing guitar 6 months and haven't been able to 'master' F until now :D

  • @xgabyx108 I've played guitar for 7 years and still can't barre chords because of how small my hands are...

  • this video has helped me a lot, thanks justin

  • is this an acoustic guitar ?

  • nai einai

  • yes

  • when 4 example jumping from Dmaj barre chord to Emin barre chiord..i have difficulty landing all my fingers at once....any tips?thnx

  • lol what was up with that weird bear rat thing at the end :p

  • HI! Ive been told by some people that when you play this barre chord as long as you get the top 4 strings usually that ok...is this true?? Ive watched some bands play these these barre chords and to me there not hitting all 6 strings of the barre chord. Any ideas??

  • technically yes, it's still the same notes to form the chord, it just doesn't have quite as full of a sound.

  • another great lesson

  • this helps a lot..

Justin, u're awesome! & i love your accent.

  • i need help i can do alright barre chords but when i do minor barre chords round the 7th fret where my index finger barres i do minor and the g string is muted how can i get that string to sound?

  • you're probably muting the G-string with your pinky. You should have all your fingers as vertical as possible (so you won't interrupt other strings) and also you can move your pinky closer to the A-string to leave a little space for the G-string to vibrate.

But I guess, a month later you may have already mastered that =)

  • thanks mate! i just started learning a couple months ago.. and barre chords were killing me. now my F chord is crispy!

  • Wery good, thank you :))

  • wow this helped so much i had so much problems playing barre chords because i was pressing them down flat instead of an angle and i was pissed of and kept putting barre chords off for a few days because i couldn't get them to sound correctly without having carpal tunnel

  • word. It was the ANGLE! Snap, this video is very helpful!

  • Yes this was my problem too, thanks man!

  • i was the same as you with the barre chords.now we know why we can't do it.

i shall try this and see if it works for me too :)

  • i would like to ask,is it more easy to play barre chords on more expensive guitars because they are more well made? thanks!

  • very well taught...thnx..

  • yeah practice on a classic guitar thats the only useful advice

  • I just can't do it :|

Seriously I feel like smashing my guitar.

When I try my barré chords my fingers all bend sideways and stuff..

Does anybody have some further advice?

    Please?

  • Learn how to shred instead

  • hmmm it might also have to do with how you position your thumb at the back of the neck. if your a beginner it might be easier practising these chords on an electric guitar. =)

  • It's easier to do barre chords on an electric guitar. I've been told by some that they started on the easier guitar and practiced on that for awhile, and then tried on an acoustic(which is harder to perform a barre chord on) and they did it just fine. Just remember that the fact that you learned how to properly play open chords means you can learn to play barre chords. It's all about making your fingers do things they aren't used to. Good luck. ;)

  • just keep practicing man, it takes time for your index finger to be able to barre all the way across, trust me, it only comes with practice. you have to force your fingers to learn, once they learn its cake, everyone has trouble at first, just keep at it! dont smash your guitar!

  • Yeah. I'm struggling. But I just realised that the position of the thumb on the neck is important. It helps me to pull my thumb back round behind the neck. It sounds simplistic. But to me its a revelation. Its atrhrill to finally make some progress!

  • @Kynirasho i know this sounds shitty but only practice will do it

think of every failure like this. your next failure wont be as bad and eventually youll get it

  • @1337huntard ture, true

  • @Kynirasho ik hw u feel i jus lok up different ways to play the chord :( yes i fail at barring chords

  • @Kynirasho Kynirasho.

  • @Kynirasho keep at it man, Im in the same boat n I know how frustrating it is when yr fingers wont listen to yr brain, but low and behold, after hours upon hours of prac my fingers are starting to obey!! =o)

  • @Kynirasho dont fret it it takes time I couldnt do it when I first tryed but it just takes practice the sound of music an the playing of a guitar is not worth giveing up cause you cant play it the first time :) just keep practiceing an you will get it in no time.practice makes perfect.

  • @Kynirasho me too i cant play these chords

  • @Kynirasho

practise! i had the same problem but it magicily worked after some days of practise.

  • @Kynirasho blol deyre so fucking hard ...especially o the acoustic my fingers are gonna fall off FML

  • I have problems too. it helps to try it first on higher pitches because the pressure you need to apply to hold the frets down is less...pick each string at a time, until they all are heard clearly, then go back to first frets and try again:)

  • @WeirdoOwl Justin starts with F for a reason. It is better to get used to high pressure first, so that you can mediate the pressure on higher pitches later on. If it were the other way around, you'd get frustrated for not being able to do F and you'd just avoid it. Meaning your musical range is shortened.

    Start with F, guys.

  • @Kynirasho try moveing your elbow to the right moree.. dont worry your arm will get used to it after a whilee.. its just one of them things i have the same problem here brutha

  • @Kynirasho I noticed your comment was a year ago. Just curious to see if you got it now that time has elapsed?

  • @Kynirasho all i can say is keep at it, i felt exactly the same way at the beginning but now i find them easy

  • Tough, but I want to learn and nobody said it would be easy. Great tip about using the side of you 1st finger and the flat part of it.
