if live concert music may consider the "acting" of musicians, Maria João performed the best interpretation possible of that music, as you can perceive right after 0:57
@misspeckpeck Steinway is not the only maker of top notch concerto pianos. Also, Steinway's typical tone and key mechanism is quite peculiar. Perhaps she finds Yamaha's more suitable for this concerto. If Pires thinks this is a good enough piano for such a massive piece and delightful performance, I think we should all trust her judgement on whether Yamaha makes good pianos or not. But maybe you know something we don't know.
I'm no piano expert (lol I mean, not even close. The closest thing I played to a piano was a Yamaha psr 213 - an electric piano that doesn't even have touch sensitive keys)... So I'm really just asking for an honest answer:
What's the problem with Yamaha Grand Pianos, like this one that Maria João Pires is playing?
@DavidCucchi She has a contract with Yamaha. Infact she has pianos made especially for her since she has a small hand and a very peculiar touché. I once had one of them at hand and i can say they behave better then any normal steinway concert grand, since they are made with such special features.
@DavidCucchi i think most top pianists don't have much preference for a particular brand as long as it's a well tuned and regulated top quality piano.
maybe she choses Yamaha because it's better for her. Yamaha's are generally more reliable and less varied than Steinway grands. the keyboard is much more even, which is particularly useful in Mozart, don't you think? Im sure if she wanted steinway she would have steinway, its not like shes a second rate musician. Richter used Yahama too, excuslively
I didn't mean that all his works should be in minor keys! But what we have now is 2 piano concerts out of 27, 2 symphonies out of 60 and the other major works are all written in major keys (concertos) apart from a Mass and a Requiem!
MimasS56- that may be true, but all his fantasias, including k475, k396, k397 are written in minor keys. The number of Mozart symphonies are generally regarded as 41. It's not certain whether other symphonic works were written by him. Among them, there's one in A minor, by the way. It was unusual for composers of that period to choose minor keys for their pieces' home keys. It was commonly thought they're unstable. It was Mozart who set examples for future Romantic piano concertos.
Major keys compositions were thought to give brilliant melodies.. Haydn though wrote more symphonies in minor keys... But we must confess that minor keys melodies are more popular and "serious" and easier for new listeners!
@MimasS56 Precisely. Which is why, as a minor key lover, I prefer Bach, Chopin, and Tchaikovsky over Mozart, NOT to take anything away from a virtuoso like Mozart :).
Wonderful!!!

at 2:17 the piano copies the tune which the woodwinds have just played but with some added notes at the end. Cute.

Maria Pires is awesome pianist, she gives the music fullness and much appretiated romance touch. She plays with her heart.
