I haven't seen many Cooper films, that's just the way things worked out. I wasn't avoiding them, Cooper reminds me of Harrison Ford in this role. Wasn't 'Rio Bravo' intended as a response to 'High Noon'? Also the edited sequence with Tiomenkin's music that finishes just as this clip is starting has to be one of the most memorable I 've seen.
@RichardElden Think that was the whole point, the hero didn't have to young or youthful.
With Lloyd Bridges' character Deputy Harvey Pell , it was about youthful pride and ego.
With Kane, played by Cooper it was, it was something much deeper!!!!
the "William 'Bill' Munny" character, as played by Clint Eastwwod in "Unforgiven" was similar, Munny wasn't good guy but he showed that experience rather than arrogant youth hold any sway!!!!
I just watched this movie in its entirety, and I LOVED it. One of the best Westerns I've ever seen. The Marshal is the very definition of an honourable hero.
This little snippet from one of my favourite movies, "High Noon", shows how it really is:
If you need help, if you need true friends - you will find yourself being alone in the end!!! There's no one who will stand by your side in times of distress, desperation and loneliness...
In the end, you have to fight it out all by yourself...
Nothing has ever changed with two-faced people and our hypocritical society.
Gary plays not a brave marshal but, a couragous marshal. There is a huge difference. Bravery is merely fearlessness. Courage is doing what is right even when you are scared to do it because you know that a man's greatest wealth is his dignity. A man is better off dead than without dignity.
@1971SuperLead I really liked your way of explaining courage and bravery. Honor plays a major role as well in life. Unfortunately society does not hold these concepts in a great deal esteem of esteem anymore. I prefer to see people for their good and loving hearts and not their so called status.
@pris613 I grew up in the 60's watching The Lone Ranger, Bonanza, Big Valley, Rifleman, etc and learned all about how honor was more valuable than money or material wealth. This lesson seems to be history as the people of today will lie, cheat and steal at the drop of a hat. How terribly sad for them, for I still rather have honor than money. It just feels so much better.
@1971SuperLead I grew up in the late 50s and 60s and enjoy shows like The Wonder Years. I don't care how old fashioned people might think I can be, I agree with you that honor has great value. I think random acts of kindness are very important as is being kind to strangers. It is amazing how well most people react to a compliment from a stranger. Most just quietly beam, some start to talk and I listen. The world is a tough place and all of us can help our fellow man whenever, however we can.
@pris613 Nothing is more important to a person's happiness than his self esteem. Money boosts our self esteem only temporarily. The only real way to have self esteem is to avoid being a creep and try to be a hero at all times. Having good people be glad you are alive is what gives us a sense of real value. Being a blight on society causes us tremendous feelings of worthlessness. NOTHING is worse than feeling worthless. Nothing feels better than being a hero. Cane was no fool. He chose hero.
"Don't shove me. I don't like to be shoved." John Wayne called this film Un-American. I think it is all about America-it's a save your own ass society.
cmon the even if they are called spaghetti western the best movies are the good the bad and teh ugly, for a few more dollars and etc. together with the music of ennio moricone. check the beginning of the good... how he is expressing everything intensively without even speaking for the first 15 minutes of the movie. I think no movie surpassed them.
It is indeed a great movie. I just saw it for the first time over the weekend. It's a great story of a lawman deserted by the people he knew best when trouble is on its way. It really is a great lesson to learn. He had to stand alone on his own two feet. Seems that today's movies can't teach these morals to todays generation
@hunchbacked Well the truth is that in real life Cooper had no class at all, since he lived with his gay lover Anderson Lawler and forced Patricia Neal to abort her child. He also punched her in the face after he caught Kirk Dpouglas trying to seduce her.
I have often of good actors that they had no real class in real life.
The best example is Charlie Chaplin: He was a fantastic actor, probably the best who ever existed, he was a genuine genius, even making himself the music of his films; but some have said really hoprrible things about his private life, some even chilling you in the back; I remember an artile of someone who was talking about Chaplin with the uttermost contempt.
There's also much criticism about Erroll Flynn's private life, and he was a fantactic actor too.
What do you prefer? An actor woth much class on the screen but not so much in his private life, or an actor who has no class on screen but is perfectly clean in his private life?
I don't mind about an actor's private life, it's his private life, not mine; I only care about the class he has on screen; it's this image he leaves in his films.
Sometimes, when I see some criticisms of brilliant actors, I'm wondering if it isn't just jealousy of their talent which pushes to try to cover them with shame.
Believe me....I know what this movie says about our society...and I'm still standing up on corruption & negligence on my own 2 feet. I can't speak for the people, but I can speak for me. Now you know where I stand. The question is are you willing to standing up for a just cause?

If Gary Cooper isn't careful Ben Miller will sing Purple People Eater at him. Seriously, what a varied career Sheb Wooley had.
