  • great video mark

  • I really missed that the video didn't tell anything about the modern discovery of Vitamin C by Albert Szent-Györgyi in the 1920s. The story is just as interesting as he wanted to disprove his wife's claims on how healthy paprika was and perhaps convince her not to include those in his lunch as he wasn't so fond of them, led to the eventual discovery.

  • at 6:25- to the end. I'm not sure I agree with what docs saying.

  • Anyone saw that he drew horns on James Lind?

  • The are a few mistakes in this video. First of all, it's James Lind's book is called "A treatise on THE scurvy", and it was published in 1753, and not in 1746 as Dr. David Agus said.

James Lind did not per se let anyone die. He was doing the world's first clinical trial, and he did not know if citrus fruits would cure scurvy necessarily. He, and some of his contemporaries, were aware of citrus fruits' antiscorbutic effects, but had no idea that it had something to do with ascorbic acids.

  • always heard about sea-farers getting scurvy, so eventually they began having lime cargos....i wondered tho, why couldn't they have caught any fish? were they extremely strict veggies or vegans...i doubt it. or even seaweeds for that matter. why not bring dried fruits, candied peels. i suppose if it was 18th C. then no wonder cause the madness had set into society quite a bit by that time...

  • 2:44 lololol

  • the guy asking the questions is the guy from UNDERGROUNDWELLNESS !!!

  • Thumbs up if you needed to go here for school.

  • Did you guys notice sal drawing horns on James Lind ? AWESOME !!!

  • @Msobsidianstar Thanks for pointing that out lol. I wasn't watching the video, just listening to it.

  • Big Pharma can't sell cannabis, but they can sell the THC cannabis extract.

  • talking about vitamin C and not to mention Mr. Linus Pauling...it is like talking about mountains and not to mention Mt.Everest...Amazon: Linus Pauling - How to live longer and feel better...

  • @silvercoin1111 - good mention. bbc2 years ago did a series called Heretics about people whose ideas were clearly sane, but so-called scientists preferred to ignore them or ridicule them.

  • Good content.

  • wild!!!

  • he never heard of scurvy, did he not take highschool history class,,,

  • @lastchancemst1

It's more likely he asked him to elaborate on scurvy out of concern that there might be a viewer who didn't know what scurvy was. Also, I know what scurvy is from general knowledge, but it was never covered in my high school.

  • I LOVE YOU SAL!!

  • It's hard to believe that a seven minute talk on vitamin C turned into one of the most interesting discussions I have ever heard.

Pretty awesome and damn, I'm ignorant of a great many things.

  • @sleep1iopen I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion. The Doc and Sal said that the definition of vitamins, including vitamin C, are molecules that the body can not create or synthesize, so we must get them from food or pills, or it's the scurvy for you my friend!

  • Holy crap, they sell OJ in clear bottles from Tropicana. So I guess all those bottles have no Vitamin C because of the exposure to light?

  • It's funny because I have a pill fir vitamin C in my mouth during this.

  • At 6:25 there is a small misstatement. Dr. Agus says that from "1946 to the 1930s...". He of course meant to say "from 1746 to the 1930s..."

  • @masteroids Also the doctor says a orange has about 1,2 or 3 milligrams....wrong, the true number is about 50 mg, so about two oranges a day would fulfill the recommend daily allowance of vitamin c (about 90mg) ! But when I have a cold or flu brewing I always pop 500mg pills of vitamin C.

  • @pavelow235 500mg? That sounds kinda crazy. Do you have a headache or something afterwards???!!!! LOL

  • So how long will it take for whole vitamin c to oxides from an opened carton of juice ?

  • @30LayersOfKevlar in 2 weeks there is no vitamin c left in an opened and refrigerated bottle of oj

  • @PartVIII Interesting !

  • sal will you please do a video on GMO's?

  • It's actually a good idea to take in more Vitamin C than you need. It's cheap, it's almost impossible to overdose, it is excreted quickly and it prevents hangover. Other health benefits are not as strong, but if you do a lot of sports, you might need more Vitamin C.

  • the eskimo's get their vitamin c from a gland in the moose.

  • How many people noticed the horns he drew on captain Lind?

  • i can speak for the link between vitamin C and gum health. i hope i never have to go without vitamin C.

  • wait, what was that at the end? a pill has much more vit C than we really need?

  • AS WE GO ON

    WE REMEMBER

    ALL T----

    wait oops

  • A large percentage of the lit and physics students at my college (about 400 students total, very small school) developed scurvy. I laughed so hard at all of them. Apparently that is what happens when you eat nothing but ramen noodles while doing schoolwork/video games pretty much literally 24/7. :p

  • @Melthornal wowww...that's bazaar, just because your in college, does not mean you should drink coffee 24/7 and eat ramen noodles......some students are just soooooo, i want to say stupid but am being too nice..... =/

  • @djmussy18 These were students who were extremely, extremely intelligent and also hardcore into video games. :p Their life was essentially "work, video games, WORK. MOAR VIDEO GAMES. OMG MOAR WOOOOORK... video games"

  • @Melthornal wow...
