Video is a great thing, as it's a great opportunity for independent/new filmmakers to make movies very cheap.
But I think video and film are two different mediums. There are cases where video can be used effectively, like, for a certain look, just like David Lynch did with Inland Empire. But video is never going to look like film. And I think, if you're so far, you have the cash, and do not look for the video-look, you should shoot movies on film and never confuse video with film.
I advise watching on big screen (or buy the movie with the bonus discs). First movie I've purchased in a decade (thanks in large part to super-suck maintstream yeay!)
// ||-_-|| \\ @Cadmium77 ( RE :: the rabbits )) so kinda creeped out by that part. I agree/ditto the rabbits are awesome.
Digital may be less expensive, but nothing compares to the art of using film. But I must say, David Lynch is the only director who's shot in dv that i've enjoyed.
because the film age is gone baby gone my friend -film see you later -My name is digital and I like people with low budgets and even people with no budgets at all...... My name is film and fuck you unless you've got at least ten grants to make a fucking short film with one take per shot¡¡¡¡!!!!!
Digital - its cool
Film -its lovely, looks great but fuck it its too expensive
Digital technology means that anyone can make a film on no budget. It means that true artistic freedom can be enjoyed by anyone who wishes to take it.
It's only simple if you write off around two thirds of it as "expressionistic lacing." It's three narratives, at least, running circles around each other. The first two kick off during the opening minutes, then the third takes up the next hour. People get lost after that because what's put forward in the first minutes doesn't register on a first viewing. What they've mistaken for the story is a story in a story in a story. Whatever you read into it or not, structurally it's a mind-bender.
I suppose I'll have to watch it a third time. What I said came off slightly off. There are definitely multiple narratives, I just notice that Lynch tends to stretch his narratives out quite a bit with mood shots.

When I heard about the scenes with the big bunnies I thought; "whoa that's going to suck".
Those were the most awesome scenes in the movie.

It made it so much scarier that he did the whole thing on DV, don't you think?!
It almost seems as though celluloid film these days, especially for a Lynch film, would be somewhat cliche and predictable.

The technology is getting to the point where that won't be true much longer.

its just hard to figure out his movies. he said a lot of people have explained his movies to him and there not the same as he wrote them up
nerrad127 4 years ago
@nerrad127
Of course they're not the same. No one ever looks at my G-rated shock value video the same way either.

david lynch said hes never ever got an explanation of one of his movies as hes wrote it up.
nerrad127 4 years ago
why?
Flamingrivers 4 years ago
that film is like more a piece of art then a movie. that movie is i think his hardest movie to figure out
nerrad127 4 years ago
That really just means you're reading too much into it. It's a very simple narrative heavily laced with surreal, abstract expression.

Celluloid film is incredibly arduous and expensive to develop and edit.
Most directors these days are switching to digital now and Lynch is following suit.
