Yes. It was done by Order of the City Judge, in lieu of Safety School, for high school age traffic offenders. Old track, but new passenger service, after years of less than 1 train per week.

For the record, this was a planned event by the city to show what happens when a train hit a car. The trains system was new and they were trying to deter people from trying to "beat the train". The car was a junker and the train was only going at 1/3 normal speed. Saw it live and in person actually... wasn't that entertaining

No they can't. Use your fuking common sense. A large group of people would not park a car on the railroad tracks and stand back to watch. The railroad was obviously part of the planning, seeing as there was no visible brake application on the train itself. Its just a matter of common sense and sight to know that they did not park it on the tracks for the train to hit it without the railroad knwoing about and granting the use of their train. Again, it's to make people aware of the risks, in order to reduce the chance of an unstaged collision occuring... They wouldn't need to do it if common sense was more widespread among road users.

As a paramedic on a number of grade crossing collisions, and Operation Lifesaver Presenter, there is plenty of film showing this. Plus plenty of photos and footage capturing REAL grade crossing collisions. No need to stage yet another one. They could have used plenty of what is already available.

Formerly worked for Metro Paramedic Ambulance. Now volunteer firefighter. Have been on a number of grade crossing collisions. All drivers were Darwin Award winners! I'm also a green person and imagine how much these worthless events cost; make up and bring train to the site, place car, run train into car, take car away, take train back, etc., etc., etc.

This (hopefully) wasn't made for BoobTube. There are already enough staged grade crossing collision films.

No one makes a film of one train passing, driver does not wait for signals to cease operating and is killed by second train on other track - a common cause of deaths. Guess it's not "fun" enough to produce.

These guys are all idiots, especially to risk derailing the train. (albeit a very small risk)

The staged crash was organised by Network Rail, Top Gear were simply asked to film it so that it would get some proper TV coverage. You're saying that showing people what will happen to them if they mess with crossings is a bad thing... which suggests you don't want people to be aware of the risks...

What on earth were all the whistles and cheers for? One has to wonder about the sanity of the spectators, and the idiots who staged the crash. It is barely two years since a number of train passegers died whan a UK train hit a small car on a railroad crossing. The train was completely derailed into a field, at approximately the same distance from the track where those spectators were standing. It could not be proven but it was thought the car driver was comitting suicide. He was successful.

You've answered your own question. It's a STAGED crash. Top Gear did exactly the same over here a few months ago and it was broadcast on the BBC to an audience of millions. In the engine you have a great view of the track, only problem, when you hit someone, where do you think the body parts go??? On the window. Blood everywhere. I'm not sure the FBI would be interested in investigating a STAGED collision. Do you understand the word STAGED? It means it was PLANNED. A DEMONSTRATION. The collision was set up DELIBERATELY by the railroad and the organisation that wanted to show car drivers the consequences of jumping the lights at crossings. I'm amazed at the level of stupidity you see on youtube sometimes. Get a dictionary out before replying.
