@nosenipples - it sounds "mannish" because the track is being played at the wrong speed - its dragging like dying batteries in an old-school Walkman. One can easily find this track in its proper speed. The uploader needs to take this shit down.
@ThePlainzryder you're wrong. The original album & ''45 does not say 2:35,which doesn't account for almost 10 seconds of dead air at the beginning of this clip. The time is 2:21. I have the original record of "The Wonderful World of Julie London" (from where this song is taken) as well as the 2007 & 2010 CD releases of it. Julie was a heavy smoker yes, but she never soundes remotely like this even up to her last album. The speed of the song has been tampered with.
@ThePlainzryder - you can sample this track at its proper speed on amazon by looking up the 2007 2-fer -
"The End Of The World/The Wonderful World of Julie London"
this particular version of "I'm Coming Back to You" is taken from a European album from the mid-late '90s titled "Swing Me an Old Song" that featured some of Julie's Hits. A number of the tracks are played at about 1/4 of their proper speed.
well it sounds the same to me. the song was released in australia in 1964 on a single......made the top 40 charts for only a few weeks . still love the song.
Well, I'm pretty good at remembering musical themes in their original key (I can hit a key on pitch this way), and this one was and remains in Ab Major. A slowed down turn table would have changed it. Things of course can be slowed down digitally with modest equipment (I beleive a Tascam DR-1 will even do it). One possibility as that there were multiple takes recorded, and that she sang it at different tempos. But this is pretty close to my memory from 1963
No, sounds perfect to me. Same tempo as I remember, and pitch wise-- still in the key of A flat Major as it always was (that the four flats in the key signature).
no -it REALLY IS slowed down. This track is from the album "The Wonderful World of Julie London", which has been re-released on CD. I also have the original LP. Look up the CD on amazon & sample this track (its on a 2-fer w/ "The End Of the World"). The person that uploaded this took the track from a 1993 Belgian compilation CD titlted "Swing Me An Old Song". For some reason this CD offers a few tracks in oddly slowed-down forms.
sorry - check amazon UK. You'll find a sample of "I'm Coming back To You" under "The End Of The World/The Wonderful World Of Julie London" in proper speed & pitch.
I don't see any samples on Amazon. In any case are you saying it should be in the4 key of A Major? or Bb? (You can determine this with almost any musical instrument) I think this would drive me nuts if it were in the wrong key. A slight change in pitch would throw it clear across the circle of fifths (A major is 3 #s)
I forgot to mention, I was was referring to the year 1962-63 in my previous post. Dick Butkus, although I never saw him outside that one class (he was just there for that once class he told me), was super cool too. Also, that the song is in the key of Ab major (4 flats in the key signature). Julie's "low" voice really made the song a hit, I think. But if you think she has a low voice, ha! Do a Search on "Dame Clara Butt" Sir Thomas Beecham once said she could be heard clear across E Channel
This was one of my fav songs in high school. It was even played on "rock" stations in Chicago. Listened to it while I was wiring up my sci fair project-- a flying spot scanner. Who else was in my electronics class at CVS (Dick Butkus had been in my Geometry class the year before)? A kid named Tommy Campana. I never did much in later years in the way of technology, but Tommy went on to invent Blackberry technology. His widow is now worth about a billion. Was a super nice guy. I really liked him.
I'm glad you mentioned Diana Krall. I see a lot of similarity between the two women. I was a tad too young to remember Julie London, but I do (now) love her songs. I think that kind of song will make a comeback. The 50's and 60's are there forever. I'm from canada, we have two great singers who have revived a lot of 1950's songs. Michel Bublé and Diana Krall have done a great job. .
I just looked at the other posts. I can answer my own question. She was on Emergency...and I had no idea she was a singer. Thanks for posting and bringing it to light for us who didn't know.
This bland Muzak-ish pop tune, with sugary backing vocals and Julie's singing double-tracked, hardly shows off her voice to its best advantage. Check out the clip of her singing "Bye Bye Blackbird" accompanied only by stand-up bass, or her signature rendition of "Cry Me a River." That's the real Julie.
Moon River is simple too-- I know because I play it on my clarinet as a street musician. Yet, there is just something magical about that tune. The way people react to it is just amazing. To me, this tune has a similar magical quality. I remember it being played on the radio all the time back in '63 when I was in high school. I loved it then and I love it now-- even though my tastes have since broadened to include Bruckner, Mahler, Schoenberg, and Alban Berg.
"Swing Me an Old Song" was the name of an album London recorded in 1959. It was also used as the title of a 1996 European compilation, which is from where the version heard here is pulled. However, the track was dubbed at the wrong speed. It is available at the correct speed on "The End of the World"/"The Wonderful World of Julie London", a Britain-issued 2-in-1 CD.
One of my biggest regrets is that I left it so late to discover this wonderful soulful lady, I feel I have missed out on so much. How she passed me by I'll never Know. My wife has just bought me the combined CD "Her Name is Julie"/"Lonely Girl" for Christmas, I havn't stopped playing it since!
November 1963 Julie sang at the Outrigger Inn St. Petersburg FL.
