Buddy Miles died on February 26, 2008, at his home in Austin, Texas at the age of 60. According to his website he died of congestive heart disease, His sister and mother both died of the same illness.
It is known that his heart had certainly been struggling, working at only 15%, and his health had been consistently deteriorating over the past few months. According to friends, "he had turned off his defibrillator and was ready for heaven.
I don't think these guys are attempting to play the BOG version. Check out the Buddy Miles Them Changes album (with horns) and you'll hear this version is a lot closer to what Clapton/Winwood are playing. That said, there's a guy named Charlie Karp who plays a nice solo on the "original" (no it's not Hendrix, but who is?)
The guitar wah! wah! is missing from this performance. It supposed to be in there. This was the second voice that accompanied Buddy Miles and his great song. The wah! wah! boosted Jimi's guitar an octave higher and is what helped make the original version funky and kick a lot of ass. Sorry, I like Clapton but I love Jimi a lot more. LOL
@55Diddley. First of all, there is no rule written anywhere saying a wah-wah is "supposed" to be in this song.I've heard probably a dozen different interpretations of this song and only Jimi's and I think Jeff Beck's version has it. Second, a wah-wah doesn't boost a guitar an octave higher. Third, no one gives a shit if you like Jimi more than Clapton. I like Steve Cropper more than both of them. Do you care? I didn't think so.
This song totally tears its really easy to play too. Hey has anyone noticed the older and older Eric Clapton gets he happens to play his guitar alot harder he just has been jammin these last few years I mean yeah hes good but hes getting alot better as he gets older...
Anyone think that he wants to get like this before he dies? lol cause thats what I think.
I like Clapton, but seriously folks (Hey Joe!): Hendrix is better in this tune ... even Neal Schon/Carlos Santana are better in a 1970 Hawaii crater! Yes!
But I love the singer! Winwoods as good as Jack Bruce and Robert Plant, and singin the Blues, hes better!
Comming with real sound in my ears from that New years concert 69/70 where The Band of gypsies play this,,,,,,he he he there is NO comparison. These guys are great, but its stiff and nuttheavy played.
Do yourself a favour and LISTEN to the real thing.: B O G with Hendrix, Miles and Cox.
yeah, I saw Buddy around that time to in Colorado Springs. Despite a very light turn-out he put on a fantastic show. "The Cement Mixer" laid down one funky, precise beat when he got behind those drums. Gypsys [sic] was far better than anything else Hendrix did in his life-time and Miles Davis used to tell Jack DeJohnette (incredible jazz drummer) to "play like Buddy" Now THAT's an endorsement!
i love winwood and clapton together. Is there a professional video of this. i want this concert sooooo bad. can some one help me out? reply, or send me a message.
...and don't forget Duane Allman! Some of the last sessions he played on were for Layla and other assorted love songs, then he died less than one year later. Just joking of course, Eric, and Duane too, are two of my favourite guitarists since the first time I picked up the instrument.
@mattnara I heard that he bought the guitar one day before Jimi died to give it to him as a gift. Also I heard Clapton say in an interview that he was furious when Jimi Hendrix died because he felt cheated!
Great tribute to a great man, RIP Buddy, so glad I saw you perform in the 60's, best drummer I ever saw & one of the greatest soul voice's of my generation. Buddy & I are the same age & saw the "Electric Flag" every time they played SF during the 60's.
Buddy Miles died on February 26, 2008 at his home in Austin, Texas at the age of 60.
There was a history of congestive heart failure in his family. His sister and mother both died of the same illness.
The day before Buddy died, he heard Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton playing 'Them Changes' at Madison Square Garden through his cell phone. 'Them Changes' is now part of Clapton's set on tour as a tribute to Budd
Buddy Miles was an amazing musician and It's great to see it's been recognized by others in the industry. See if you can listen to his cover of 'All along the watchtower', it's stunning.

Here's an explanation for you guys...
Oh, I guess Eric Clapton and Stevie Winwood also played this song 2/27/08.
Because Buddy Miles listened this song live through his cellphone a day before he died(2/27/08).
Here's an explanation for you guys...
It's good to have some people like Eric and Stevie keeping the Spirit Of Rock alive.

Clapton is good, but is the most overrated guitar players of all time. This version is a bit sterile .

Wouldn't it be great if there could be just one dam' comments thread that didn't descend into a musical-taste d!ck-waving contest -- just one?
It's a great performance by great performers.
There is nothing gained by comparing it to other performances and performers.
Let's be thankful for Buddy Miles' brilliance & his time with us, and hope he's jamming happy somewhere.
