  • I like this version best of all. Not the knock off versions of Dixie. And @stanh4464 no way in hell Riley Puckett could sound like that, good god. If i could see him sing like that a would laugh so damn hard. He looks like he wants to beat the life out of you.

  • This song was written by a Yankee from Ohio and was enjoyed by Abe Lincoln himself. So, yeah, there is that.

  • from Arkansas and darn proud of it

  • I have no idea how I ended up up here, but am glad I did this is THE KIND, I've heard the name but never heard them play before. What year was this recorded???

  • @wc4dblues My guess would be somewhere in the mid 20's to early 30's.

  • God Bless Dixie

  • Beautiful version of this old song, which led many men to fight and die in the field of Honor.

Unfortunately a war between brothers, but that is history.

I play banjo 5-string and this song I liked, and I'm practicing with great pleasure.

From Buenos Aires, Argentina, a very cordial greeting, José Luis

God bless all of America, North, Central and South.

  • Now this is country music. Dixie not the Chicks!

  • I notice on this and other Skillet Lickers recordings there is some crazy female sounding voice in the background. Were there women singing also or is that someone doing an insane falsetto?

  • @qivideo8 ...it would be Gid Tanner on the falsetto. Oddly enough on a lot of Fiddlin' John Carson his daughter "Moonshine Kate" sounds very similar.

  • @qivideo8 That's Riley Puckett the man seated. He sings like that in many of the Skillet Lickers songs.

  • @qivideo8 It is a falsetto. My lp collection is on the other side of town so I can't think of his name offhand.Falsetto singing was quite popular at that time and many stringbands featured one.

  • The South Will rise Again. and when it does you better stay out of there way they will be striking with and iron hammer.

  • My Kinda Music - Excellent

  • This is not about the civil war, this is celebrating the heritage of the South

  • this song makes me wanna run into battle yelling the rebel yell as loud as i can

  • Fabulous! Betcha it sounded like this in Gettysburg...

  • Very well could have. Thank you for stopping by, and I hope you have a great day, Brian

  • This is the best version I've ever heard,.....Mark from NYC!

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it! Be sure to check out my other Skillet Lickers videos I have posted. Thanks for watching/commenting, and I hope you have a great day, Brian

  • real americana, good music with heart, the rebs, were a proud bunch and still are, they fought and died for what they belived in,as did the union, had the south been stronger with more support behind them they would have most likley won,as it was with what they had they did a wonderful job,but men can only be starved so long, long live the south, and stars and bars,

  • @colindominy Of course this song was written by Daniel Decatur Emmet... from Mount Vernon Ohio.

  • Run Nigger Run way better. SS!

  • All politics etc aside (quite aside) - There really IS something wonderfully special .. & also immensely appealing & enjoyable .. about the musical tradition of The South. And .. No one, I think, except men of The South .. good & true, borned & raised .. can do proper justice to this wonderful number .. & especially such awesome home-grown natural talent as Gid, Riley, Clayton & the rest of the boys .. yet another wonderful posting, Brian. Congrats !!

  • Good morning! I think you are right about them being able to make this song come alive. I think too that back then, they had probably heard stories firsthand as children from Confederate veterans and seen the fire in their eyes when they told those stories. I can't help but wonder if they and others like them would think of those old men when they sang this song. Neat stuff. Thank you for watching and I hope you have a great day, Brian

  • @colindominy Of course this song was written by Daniel Decatur Emmet... from Mount Vernon Ohio.

  • I don't care for modern country music or most of the people who perform it but this I like.

  • It's awfully good stuff. Thanks for watching and have a great evening. Brian

  • Great stuff from back when country music was really country music!

  • Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Be sure to check out my channel. I have posted over 700 old time country music recordings from the 20's & 30's there. Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching and have a great day, Brian

  • more like great before there was a such thing as country

  • Great rendition. But as a history buff I must interject here the civil war was not about slavery, but whether the individual states had the right to leave the union. And for those that do not know, military wise the south did win the war but the final battle , not one of Lees best days , was one of the north's very few military victories. The issues was decided on that day, the states do not have thr right to leave the union, thus the UNITED States remains intact, which was the real issue.

  • @dms47949 Hmm... over what issue did the individual states (in the first round of secession) feel the need to leave the Union? What was it that upset them so much about Lincoln's election victory? "Not about slavery..." LOL

Which 'final battle' are you referring to? The siege of Richmond? Appomatox? What was this battle that was "one of the North's very few military victories"?

"Very few"? - Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Antietam (arguably), Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Stones River, etc.

  • May I just interject a quiet remark?A,Lincoln once wrote to another senator,I think,"If slavery is not wrong then, nothing is wrong!"And,even soem fo the slave-owning Founding Fathers were troubled by this institution.Don't denigrate the old South,it also produced some fine men and not all slave owners were brutes. They were of their time and circumstance, that's all.PACE!

  • Mighty Fine Rendention!

    GOD BLESS, DIXIE!

May She Rise Up! Out of The Ashes!

    DEO VINDICE!

  • @RebelStangII yes it shall

    gott segnen der Suden!

  • always seems to be some unregenerate suthern types who cant hear this song without a nostalgic pang for the good ol days-when they could sip their juleps-abuse their slaves-marry their sisters

  • Hi there! I am not sure what a PC person is, but if it is someone who views all races as equal, than I am proud to be one/. We were all made by the same God, and we are ALL the same in His eyes. I don't see anything "funny" about demeaning another race to make one's own "superior". I will pray for you, have a good night friend. Brian

  • Nice rendition. I still prefer the Johnny Rebel version.

  • Good morning! Thanks, I am not familiar with Johnny Rebel. Is it an old song? Have a good day, Brian

  • The Founding Fathers, half of them Northerners, wrote `All Men Are Created Equal`. Yet most of them owned slaves when they wrote it! Obviously they werent talking about everybody when they spoke of `Men`. And now you stand here and tell us different! Who are YOU to tell us that they were wrong! Are YOU wiser than they?

  • I really don't know why you are talking this way to me. When I put this up, I intended this to be viewed for enjoyment and historical edification purposes only. What you have done is to make this video a place to debate historical details and differing opinions. There are many videos on Youtube where these sorts of things will be endlessly debated. If you wish to debate these things, then please do them someplace else. Furthermore, I really don't appreciate being yelled at. Have a nice day.

  • I was responding to the PC tripe that you coughed up in your first post above. What the hell do you think I was talking about?

  • I have a old record player and all the records from the skillet lickers yee haw

  • That is awesome! That must be a big collection, they recorded a lot of songs! Where do your records at. I am 25, and am just starting my record collection. Any info you could give me would be appreciated, thanks. Have a good day, Brian

  • fantastic ty for posting god bless dixie

  • Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Have a good night. Brian

  • This is way too cool! Another fine addition to my music collection!

  • I am glad that you like this song. Check out the other videos on my channel. I have 500+ old time videos from the 20's and 30's mostly. I am sure you will find many more treasures. Thanks for watching/commenting and have a good day. Brian

  • I discovered Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers a long time ago when I worked on the air in a small AM radio station in Alabama. It was a country music station and I played Gid's records every now and then.

  • That is really cool! When was this? They sure know good music down in Alabama! Thanks for sharing and have a good day, Brian

  • Great stuff; Thank for posting;

  • Thank you, I am very glad you enjoyed this performance too. Have a good night, Brian

  • Thanks for posting.

  • You're welcome, glad you enjoyed this too! Have a good night, Brian

  • HI there, I see that you are angry at the above comment, but showing your hatefulness to condemn his is no better than what he said. Like I said above, I put this video up for historical purposes and because I think they are a good fiddle band, not so that this would become the latest place to run people down. Because you too have shown an incapability of conducting yourself in a civilized and appropriate manner, i will have to block you as well. I will pray for all of you, Brian

  • Hi there, I didn't put up this video for you to make derogatory statements about other people. I only put it up for historical purposes, and because I enjoy this style of music. True, there was racism segregation and racism when this music was recorded, but I would hope that we would be able to leave that behind and rise above that today. I have blocked you because you haven't shown yourself to be able to comment in a polite and decent fashion. I will pray for you, Brian

  • great stuff! man they had a good sound

  • Thanks!

  • Brian : you've done it yet again, mate !! This is just such a sweet sound on this posting. Gid & the Skillet Lickers have a legit unique sound to them .. like most really great, very talented bands & artists, I guess, down thru all these decades gone. Before the first opening quarter-bar of the song is through, you just know it's good old GT & TSLs again !! I've never heard a version of this dear old song before that's so 'authentic' & 'original' sounding. P.S. - I'll send in requests soon !

  • It's awesome to hear so many people who enjoy this good old music. Thank you for your kind words. I agree, the Skillet Lickers were and will continue to be an amazing band. I am glad that you enjoyed it, and yeah let me know what requests you have and I will see what I can do about posting them. Have a great night, Brian

  • Really nice!!

  • Thanks, glad you like it!

  • Thank you for posting this great American and his MUSIC...

  • It's my pleasure, glad you like it. I will try to keep posting more Skillet Lickers songs as I am able. Take care, Brian

  • Very nice song!!!

  • Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it. Be sure and check out my other videos. Thank you for watching!

  • beautiful version of the song, damn near brought a tear to my eye to hear it sung in the classic mannar.

  • I am very glad you enjoyed it! You would be hard pressed to find people playing it this way anymore. It's a cool thought that these men might have been sons of confederate soldiers, and as such, would have learned this song first hand.

  • like this type music very much!

  • I'm glad, the Skillet Lickers sure are good!
