when i was 13 and i heard slash play the november rain solo, i thought he was God. By the time i was 16. i could play Slash's stuff with my eyes closed.
I still havent figured out Shawn Lane's notes and patterns yet
I've learned a lot about Shawn's technique from his videos (Youtube is good for some things besides wasting time hehe).
Striking me the most was something I have overlooked over the years. He plays (brace yourself) the same scales mediocre players like Slash do, but does something very hard which is to replay notes with different fingers. The same notes he just played, ok...But he goes further into the pattern and then goes back with sort an "extra finger."
But knowing this now does nothing for me. I would literally have to have been taught that way before I was taught the traditional methods of playing. One teacher I sort of got this lesson in a way to excersize your fingers to warm up, but never ever did I realize there are those things you could put to use.
Everyone has their "zone" too and usually it makes us all revert to three finger patterns in CMaj/Emin/Amaj/Harmonic Minor/Pentatonic/Chromatic and all the other "proper" licks and things
But as an afterthought, the fact that he plays in this manner (like I was told to warm up and excersize my fingering) has made him like some kind of super athlete on the fretboard. We all knew that the minute we heard him. But the reason we are still obsessed is no doubt because he took control of his technique and made it into intelligently phrased music and not some crazy funk shred thing like everyone expected. I thought no band would ever work with it, but he changed into a butterfly.
another thing with shawn is his ability to play extremely well in the "major" scale. Many guitarists play great in the simple scale prog. of Am, F G, Em etc. but screw up when they have to play fast stuff in a simple D, G , F#m, A etc Plus hes a master of Indian ragas, hes done his time with Indian musicians. Hear "Aga of the Ladies".its in a classical indian scale which we call "Raag Durga". Lead phrasing is also what sets him apart. The run in "get you back" is one of the best ive ever seen
Shawn used a different way to finger scales in groups of five, and he used different fingers to ascend pentatonic scales, for example if you play groups of five you have to eventually "roll" your third finger to get the next tone on the next string, shawn just used his first finger instead, which is a much better way of doing it, considering you can play it that way faster and with more ease.
R.I.P Shawn the humblest of prodigies, the greatest guitarist who has lived.
That guitar is one of the best guitars that were ever done... if not the best... Vigier is a Master... he brought the action down to 0.7mm. Shawn was a smart man... and that's why he choose Vigier guitars.
i dunno man i mean with this kind of music i just dont click with it or r impressed by it but i mean ill tell u right now i was blown away by his playing there....i agree with both EJsigstrat and fuckyalife
You probably thought english class was boring too. Maybe so but if you would have paid a little attention you would know that it's "messenger" not messager. BTW Shawn Lane would shred your face off.
I can't compare him to George Lynch, totally differnt feel. He reminds me of Steve Vai on his Flex-Able album or maybe Eric Johnson. There's a Sax guy out there named Earnie Watts, this guy sounds like his guitar players a bit-- you should check it out. Lynch is still a good player and great in his genre.
My comment is this,SL was incredible, but Jonas' songs really brought out his best playing.I did not think the writing on his solo material was really that good.
I like some of the Hellborg stuff but I can't see how it is generally better than "Powers of Ten." This song here, from "Abstract Logic" is one of my faves from the Hellborg era.
ahahah, so you think Shawn was not the best coz he was fat ??!! But what does it mean ? Shawn had one of the best phrasing of all time, with a great technique. And he was ill since the age of 14 :( IMO Gilbert is a basic guitarplayer, he's fast but there's no emotion in his licks...
It has nothing to do with best or not. It has to do with being able to balance out one's life for their art.
Take McLaughlin; one of the best phrasing. AND close to Lane's picking speed as you can get (JM is 16 NPS. Lane is 18 NPS). AND he's able to shred at age 65,cause he's strong and healthy from good habits.
Even though Shawn Lane can pick MUCH faster, he ignored his body and died. Now that was foolish of him. Everyone should take care of their body. If they value their art so much, then they should do all it takes to preserve it, even if it means eating veggies and quitting smoking!
he was fatter because he had to take a type of steroid pill for his arthritis in his legs. my friend has the same condition, my friend used to be athletic, now he has put on about 80 lbs because he had to take a type of steroid, its actually pretty sad to see my friend now.
....but still, if Lane had stopped smoking, it would ideally add 10 years to his life. If he ate healthily, he would've added ANOTHER 10 years to his life.
And btw, sorry for your friend. I'm sorry if my rants reminded you of your friend's condition. Best wishes to him. Hope he gets better....
he couldn't afford good medical insurance so he had to get over the counter prescriptions to cope with pain that's WAY beyond tylenol i think he coped really well with it for what he went through most of his life he had psoriatic arthritis most of his life and if the lung disease didn't kill him he'd hurt horribly and his health would still deteriorate life's unfair but it was just his time to go it's sad cause he's my favorite guitarist and i'll never get to meet him
Whereas guys like Gilbert, Greg Howe, etc, are more than likely be able to shred to their 80's because they're fit. Hey, their technique may not be close to Lane's, but at least they can play till they age and not worry about death from illness.
In a similar manner; how can one practice guitar if you are homeless and broke? Sure, he may practice 99999 hours a day, but where's he gonna get his money to continue his art? At one point, he may even have to sell his guitar. You have to compromise certain things in life in order to pursue whatever 'unusual' hobbies your pursuing. Guitars cost money! so do tabs/music sheet, amps, pedals, etc. If you don't care for money, HOW THE HECK ARE YOU GONNA LIVE?
You moron. Shawn Lane smoked marijuana to lessen the pain of his condition - Psoriatic Arthiritis. It hurt him to touch the guitar, let alone play all that beautiful and incredibly technical music on it. And he was obese because of steroids, again for his condition. Seriously, shut up - your posts are idiotic.
Goodness; I don't really want to disrespect Lane's memory; but nevertheless; even IF the smoking WAS to help him (is there no other alternative? Do ALL guys with PA smoke marijuana? As far as I know, there are MANY different alternative treatments to PA according to the Arthritis website.), he could've changed a lot of his other habits such as eating more healthily to add MANY years to his life.
Oh shut up about the "eating more healthily" thing. So what if he died young? I can guarantee you he died happy - he did what he loved most for his entire life, stayed true to his artistic vision inspite of his difficulties. Now 4 years after his passing, people (ok, some morons too) are still talking about him and will continue to do so. Of the billions of people that have lived on this toxic planet, how many people can claim to have what Shawn had/has?
Certainly not you, unless preaching about "eating more healthily" on the internet is your life's goal. What would adding "MANY years to his life" give? More music for you to illegally download? Really, shut up. GOODNESS!
Adding years to his life would have gave him more joy because then he could keep playing guitar and making more people happy. Ye I kind of agree that guy should stop talking about his weight but its his right to be able to say what he wants
kifani1, there is no adding years to anyones life, and you shouldnt need someones gift to make more people happy. dont you agree that if your not happy within yourself, your not happy at all, it is a painful truth, but it is true, isnt it?
dude i so agree with you people are hypocrites these days judeding on the mans size ...why tthe hell people talk about his size than his playing thats and insult to me
he didn't die happy he was in horrific pain i'm sure he's happy he doesn't have to hurt anymore but the way he died was horrible. he had a lung disease that killed him shortly after he was supposed to be put on medical oxygen for the remainder of his life
No he has emotion you should hear his song Marine Layer, not fast, all acoustic. His new CD "Get Out Of My Yard" has some slow songs but he has emotion that you can see by his facial expressions and his love of adding vibrato. But yes Shawn Lane is amazing and in my opinion might be better than Paul but they have different styles of playing
Even if Lane was the most technical guy in the world, he still didn't take care of himself. He just practiced too much and didn't excercise at all. He smoked a lot and had bad eating habits. I'm sure ANYONE can be the most technical if they just practiced 18 hours a day and forsook life. But it doesnt work that way! That's why Gilbert is still the best BECAUSE HE IS THE FASTEST PICKER_AND_HE IS VERY FIT!!
you stupid cunt.Typical chutiya desi mentality. Lane had a genuine health problem and his condition had nothing to do with any of the lame reasons you mentioned above.Fucking noob that you are, i'd advise you to stop talking and start listening.
Look, I know that the psoriatic arthritis was a natural condition. I've read it in Wiki. But he ALSO made it worse by smoking a lot. Just look at the pictures. And just compare him between age 16 and when he died. He was slim/slender then, but became "the nutty professor" when he died. His obesity only made it worse. Now 'that' wasn't natural. He didn't excercise. AND, smoking made it EVEN WORSE!! There are so many pics of him smoking.
that was awesome, better than that michelangelo dip shit who plays soley for speed amd ;acks emotion, this guys can play fast, slow, and emotional, god damn it rocked! RIP
That's what differentiates him from almost all other "shred" guitarists. He was a relentless student of music, and playing guitar was only one avenue he used to express his musical ideas.
Yes, he was an amazing guitarist in his time, far too under-rated. He managed to record an album and a few solo pieces, they are simply unbelievable IMO
Man i didnt know about this guitarist...i know about all the others like yngwie, vai, satriani, petrucci, jason Becker,Michael angelo and all of them..but this guy ...man i love his work..is it true he is dead ?
Yeah,Shawn is one guitar. For the albums, get Powers Of Ten...It's out of print, but maybe you could find it on eBay. Then get Tri-Tone Fascination. But my favorite stuff from Shawn is what he did with Jonas Hellborg (the bassist) and Jeff Sipe (the drummer),search for their music.
i just heard about this shawn guy 5 minutes ago, is he the big fat guy playing the guitar? pretty bloody good stuff, think i will download some stuff, any recommondations on what album i should get?
The truth is that yeah he did smoke/eat himself to death. But we should really learn from his mistakes and focus on his positive aspects. He was a brilliant mind.
Yeah, amazing. I would really like to learn to do that indian style sliding. And hot damn, that picking technique is incredible! It's damn hard to play that fast, but to be able to play that fast without distortion...wow. Too bad he smoked/ate himself to death. What a waste.
I've heard of SL before but never heard him until now - I don't know what to say - he is amazing - look at how fast he plays those runs. Can anyone recommend his best album? Or are they all good?
I look like him. I look EXACTLY like him LOL. I'm nowhere near as good as he is/was. His playing style is very unique. RIP Shawn Lane. My favorite guitarist and inspiration is Randy Rhoads though. RIP Randy Rhoads as well.
Yeah man, Shawn Lane passed on Sept. 27th, 2003 at the age of 40. From what I read, his respiratory function was so poor he needed oxygen tanks just to breathe. It's truly a shame he didn't take care of himself physically, for he had so many aspects of his being to offer the world (his music being only one).
@nilewow You may not like the music, but to say that they have no talent just shows your a musical moron.

I don't know if smoking or obesity can cause psoriasis, but that's what caused his death.

I teach guitar and gig full-time, 14 years now, and have never seen a better artist on the guitar.

I have watched this video literally everyday for ages now. What does that tell you. Be cool, and let the music take you where you want to be!

Shawn Lane is technically one of the best IMO

Man, that's like watching Roy Buchanon's ghost. He even looks like him, and came to premature end like Buchanon. Definately a great musician though.

The truth is that yeah he did smoke/eat himself to death. But we should really learn from his mistakes and focus on his positive aspects. He was a brilliant mind.

Uh, Shawn neither smoked nor ate himself to death. RIP Shawn!

Yeah, amazing. I would really like to learn to do that indian style sliding. And hot damn, that picking technique is incredible! It's damn hard to play that fast, but to be able to play that fast without distortion...wow. Too bad he smoked/ate himself to death. What a waste.

Buy his Powers of Ten album if you're considering purchasing any of Shawn's music.
