By far and away the best performance I have ever heard of Largo al Factotum! And I include all the men. Her diction is immaculate, the pace and phrasing are superb.
Largo al factotum is the most popular operatic aria. This aria is made up by a long chain of short tunes. I have some 60 recordings of this Largo.Sadly most baritones, even some of the great ones, massacre much of it, especially "Figaro qua, Figaro la" and "Ah bravo Figaro, bravo bravissimo".Thanks to her flawless musicianship Deanna Durbin surpasses everyone I have heard in doing justice to each of the aria's tunes. Durbin makes us realize that Largo factotum is actually quite beautiful. Brava!
That's the thing with Deanna! She could sing anything and sing it better than most women. Her "Nessun Dorma" is to die for. no woman has ever sung it better. With "Mussetta's Waltz", the only one who ever sang it better was the great Hilde Gouden, the Viennese Opera Star! Sadly, Universal didn't treat her right, so she just retired and moved to France, where she married Charles David. She was 29!

Did Deanna ever perform in a fully staged opera anywhere? She's just so fabulous, it's all there: the looks, the charm, the intelligence, the presence and gestures, and of course the voice: it's so hard for me to understand why, if the Met wanted her, she chose to decline....I'd trade five ticket to Anna Netrebko for one shot at Deanna hands down!
@CHELSEARENTAL At the time the Met wanted her she had already made up her mind to marry the French film director, Charles David, and go to live in France. She never made any further public appearances. There was a time when she decided to write her auto biography, but changed her mind when she realized she would have to appear in public to promote it. She never performed in opera.
I fell in love with Deanna Durbin over a year ago in a seniors course titled >Holloywood Sopranos" and I still am. She'll be glad to know that. :-) Maybe sometime we can have a discussion on Deanna Durbin movies. My favorite is "Spring Parade" with Robert Cummings. Thanks, Gabby.
mdehkram No, she sang all sorts of songs. The man she is singing to knows nothing about opera. She is trying to teach him about "The Barber of Seville".
she just sang what was quite possibly the most difficult aria in all of opera like it was happy birthday. I have to work my ass off to learn stuff 1/4th this difficult.
Deanna certainly dazzles in this marvelous rendition of the famous LARGO AL FACTOTUM. She never disappointed her legion of fans..except when she left the Hollywood and retired, to live happily in France with her husband Mr. David. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Robert Osbourne on TCM could interview her. Just dreaming...but an interview with her would be so interesting! Thank you for posting this terrific video!
erzbet07, Deanna is now 87. Many years ago she thought of writing an autobiography titled, Now Its My Turn, but changed her mind when she realized she would have to give interviews.
Thank you for the information, Bish29. It is a pity that Deanna decided not to write her book..but one can't blame her for not wanting to give interviews. Hopefully, someday someone with the ability to write an insightful bio on Ms. Durbin will do so.
I'm sure Rossini won't mind that his wonderful aria is sung by a soprano, especially because Deanna Durbin gives such a brilliant performance! Yes, Figaro, Deanna can sing ALL things extremely well!!
Bravíssimo!

@CuddlyBadger Deanna Durbin sang this song in the film, For The Love Of Mary, in 1948. The aria is from, The Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini.
