  • Bravíssimo!

  • Ehm she ruin this song !

  • Lovely.TY Bish29 for posting.

  • How expert are her movements! Where does that come from?

  • @CuddlyBadger Deanna Durbin sang this song in the film, For The Love Of Mary, in 1948. The aria is from, The Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini.

  • I love Deanna Durbin!

  • By far and away the best performance I have ever heard of Largo al Factotum! And I include all the men. Her diction is immaculate, the pace and phrasing are superb.

  • Largo al factotum is the most popular operatic aria. This aria is made up by a long chain of short tunes. I have some 60 recordings of this Largo.Sadly most baritones, even some of the great ones, massacre much of it, especially "Figaro qua, Figaro la" and "Ah bravo Figaro, bravo bravissimo".Thanks to her flawless musicianship Deanna Durbin surpasses everyone I have heard in doing justice to each of the aria's tunes. Durbin makes us realize that Largo factotum is actually quite beautiful. Brava!

  • Beautiful! fergie, rihanna, beyonce are nothing in comparison

  • hermosa interpretacion

  • mdehkram,

That's the thing with Deanna! She could sing anything and sing it better than most women. Her "Nessun Dorma" is to die for. no woman has ever sung it better. With "Mussetta's Waltz", the only one who ever sang it better was the great Hilde Gouden, the Viennese Opera Star! Sadly, Universal didn't treat her right, so she just retired and moved to France, where she married Charles David. She was 29!

  • Cool! Good joke, but only a joke:-). Thanks LittleNeko666 for sharing.

  • Three unfortunate people went to Sweeny Todd's instead of watching this movie.

  • meowmeow meow meow

  • This is marvelous, never heard it with a Woman. It sound great!!!

  • Did Deanna ever perform in a fully staged opera anywhere? She's just so fabulous, it's all there: the looks, the charm, the intelligence, the presence and gestures, and of course the voice: it's so hard for me to understand why, if the Met wanted her, she chose to decline....I'd trade five ticket to Anna Netrebko for one shot at Deanna hands down!

  • @CHELSEARENTAL At the time the Met wanted her she had already made up her mind to marry the French film director, Charles David, and go to live in France. She never made any further public appearances. There was a time when she decided to write her auto biography, but changed her mind when she realized she would have to appear in public to promote it. She never performed in opera.

  • @CHELSEARENTAL Please don't even mention this angel in the same sentence as marketed celebrities like Netrebko.

  • Woo! It's nice to hear a female's soprano to this song! :3

  • SUPERB...

  • OMG

  • grandioso y excelente interpretación BRAVO !!!

  • This is absolutely one of the best performances of this song. Deanna is fantastic!

  • Charming! :)

  • meravigliosa!sa interpretare la canzone in modo stupendo!!che diva!

  • Was für eine bezaubernde version.

  • I fell in love with Deanna Durbin over a year ago in a seniors course titled >Holloywood Sopranos" and I still am. She'll be glad to know that. :-) Maybe sometime we can have a discussion on Deanna Durbin movies. My favorite is "Spring Parade" with Robert Cummings. Thanks, Gabby.

  • wonderful Figaro

  • agreed

  • Deanna is so wonderful - fabulously charming with the moustache and her whole perfomance is great - she always makes me smile! Happy Birthday Deanna!

  • Hmmm....

  • I am not sure I would ask any woman out again who could sing Largo al Factotum better than I could.

  • hahaha

  • I am not sure that a woman singing that aria to me would be a turnon.

  • She is the prettiest Figaro I have ever seen.

  • There is also a version of her singing Nessun Dorma on youtube. Did she specialize in singing male arias?

  • mdehkram No, she sang all sorts of songs. The man she is singing to knows nothing about opera. She is trying to teach him about "The Barber of Seville".

  • @mdehkram This isn't Nessun Dorma. This is Largo al Factotum

  • This aria belongs in the mouth of a baritone, if you ask me.

  • She even said it herself...

  • wow! +5

  • Bravissima!!

  • the opera isn't about Figaro at all, the title is misleading (just saw it today ;P)

  • I included the conversation leading up to the aria so that people who had not seen the film would understand why a woman was singing a mans song.

  • @Bish29 And with a lovely mustache, that is :D

  • What I love is that the makers of this movie assumed that their audience would get it.

  • Someone knows about a complete version of "Largo Factotum" with a woman...?

  • This is fabulous! Wow!

Wonderful video, thank you for posting it. :)

  • What a kick!

  • This is so cute, and a wonderful comic explanation of what opera is about by Deanna Durbin. Re: The Marriage of Figaro" Lizzy _

    Tish

  • This is frm The Barber of Seville

  • Que bien escuchar una version femenina de esta linda aria.. me encanto

    bravo bravissimo

  • Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

  • THIS IS WONDERFUL!!!!!

  • Deanna Durbin is possibly the best female that has ever sang this marvelous song. This performance was effortless. BRAVO.

  • she just sang what was quite possibly the most difficult aria in all of opera like it was happy birthday. I have to work my ass off to learn stuff 1/4th this difficult.

  • is this movie posted?

  • wow! this is amazing, what a gift!

  • excelente

  • Super! Bravo! TY.

  • good

  • Deanna certainly dazzles in this marvelous rendition of the famous LARGO AL FACTOTUM. She never disappointed her legion of fans..except when she left the Hollywood and retired, to live happily in France with her husband Mr. David. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Robert Osbourne on TCM could interview her. Just dreaming...but an interview with her would be so interesting! Thank you for posting this terrific video!

  • erzbet07, Deanna is now 87. Many years ago she thought of writing an autobiography titled, Now Its My Turn, but changed her mind when she realized she would have to give interviews.

  • Thank you for the information, Bish29. It is a pity that Deanna decided not to write her book..but one can't blame her for not wanting to give interviews. Hopefully, someday someone with the ability to write an insightful bio on Ms. Durbin will do so.

  • oaaaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  • Nice example of American Film School of 40's.

Too bad Musical is history now ... Such a charming performance and Deanna Durbin is absolutely amazing.

  • FINALLY! A female voice singing it-sounds great.

  • Deanna Durban. Great singer. Actress as well. Disappeared from the public years ago.

Used to have some 78 albums of her work.

  • ahahahahahahaha, lovvvvveeeee the end. she sings this wonderful, and she would have been a great figaro is she wasn't a soprano, haha.

  • interesting that she fell into the Tidal Basin in DC, just like Wilbur Mills and Fannie Fox years later.

  • WOW!!!!!! I can talk fast, but I can not talk as fast as she can sing.

  • I loved that... how wonderful.

  • Fantastic! Thank you for posting this. I can't believe they made her fall into the pond at the end of such a wonderful performance.

  • Primera vez que la veo a esta señorita, aparte de cantar como los angeles es bellisima. Que fue de ella?

    Saludos

    Iquique -Chile

  • I've always wanted to sing this, and I'm a soprano as well - now there's hope!

  • now you know that you also can do it... and also Nessun dorma and Di quella pira :-)

  • I have a question: What's up with her shirt ?

  • one of my fav. parts is at 4:23 when she is singing:Ah,

    bravo Figaro! Bravo, bravissimo;

    Ah, bravo Figaro! Bravo, bravissimo;

a te fortuna (a te fortuna, a te fortuna) non manchera.

    Ah, bravo Figaro! Bravo, bravissimo;

    Ah, bravo Figaro! Bravo, bravissimo;

a te fortuna (a te fortuna, a te fortuna) non manchera.

  • BRAVO!!!!

  • Well, it was superb singing and acting. Takes rare talent to do this. 1948 - one of her last films.

  • Glorious and very courageous-even for her!

  • And caps off her brilliant performance with a great pratfall!

  • I'm sure Rossini won't mind that his wonderful aria is sung by a soprano, especially because Deanna Durbin gives such a brilliant performance! Yes, Figaro, Deanna can sing ALL things extremely well!!
