These teachers are the some of the highest paid union employees in the nation. They have fat retirement benifits that are bankrupting our state. They need to understand that people that pay for their salaries and pensions are broke. Get use to it. Look at Greece it will be coming soon to California and these union employees will have no job and no pension. Wake up and smell the coffee! There is no money and there may be no jobs soon. The hurting has just begun in California.
These teachers should be embarrassed. The average teacher in that district makes about $55 per hour + benefits + a pension. Government school is an economic cancer in California and everywhere else. Considering the economy right now, these people are lucky that people willing to work for $30 per hour (or less) aren't lining up to take their place. But at least they're preparing students to do well on standardized tests, which is SUCH an important real-life skill.
Public school teachers are idiots. If they haven't noticed, people are being laid off by the thousands. They are crying about a pay cut? What planet do they live on?
Ths situation in CALIFORNIA is not a temporary situation. Teachers should take the cut--and be happy they still have a job. EVERYONE is carrying an economic burden in CA--well, even many of us here in OTHER states will be bailing CA out.
Teachers deserve the best---but when you're a state that needs bailouts---i find their disgruntled attitude to be WAY out of touch.
Correction... Two websites where you can find information on how to hold the CUSD BOARD from accountable for giving TAX PAYER money to their buddies, are: caporecall2010 dotorg and capistranounifiedchildrenfirst dotorg
....and these are just the tip of the iceberg, there are plenty more cost saving measures to reign in the free-spending unethical CUSD BOARD. It seems that this board is quite liberal in spending tax payer money when it comes to political payoffs to their buddies. But their belt tightens when it comes to paying teachers that actually run the school.
Find out about the other cost saving measures to hold the CUSD Board accountable for their out of control spending at caporecall2010 dotcom
7. Lastly how about selling the district office which the previous CUSD BOARD grossly over-paid for? Only about 1/4 of it is being used and it is a palace compared the schools where the actual learning takes place.
Accepting a 'permanent' cut is really not a permanent situation. When economic stability returns to CA--I'm sure teachers will also see the benefits. I don't think it's a coincidence that these pay cuts come during tough economic times. Is there waste by the board--surely. And that ought to be addressed.
Question...are the teachers demanding accountability by the board in exchange for permanent cuts? That seems to be a fair give and take.
7. Lastly how about selling the district office which the previous CUSD BOARD grossly over-paid for? Only about 1/4 of it is being used and it is a palace compared the schools where the actual learning takes place.
6. The Board pays Substitute teachers $275 a day for scabs to babysit the CUSD students, while the real teachers are on strike. That is over 3 TIMES the normal sub rate!!!! Talk about out of control spending... I thought there was a deficit?!?!
5. The Board has spent hundreds of thousands of tax-payer money hiring and outside public relations firm in an attempt to manage their negative public image in the South Orange County Community.
4. The CUSD Board has spent $100,000 of tax payer money for security guards for the Board forced strike. (Seriously?! So we now need to protect our kids from the very teachers that we leave our kids with on a daily basis? Ridiculous! (OC Register 4/8/10)
3. The CUSD Board has Issued new Math textbooks that were not necessary during a financial crisis. A huge waste of taxpayer money and extremely unethical. (This benefited a friend of the Trustees, specifically a spouse of a Trustee)
2. The CUSD Board has Paid out $653,350 in settlements to the same people who contributed to their campaigns. The Court case was actually dismissed, so there was no need to pay out these settlements. Another waste of tax payer money, not to mention morally dubious.
1. The CUSD board Continues to hire a multitude of Attorneys and consultants, spending millions of district dollars on consultants, lawyers and lawsuits, even though they said in their campaigns they would hire one in-house counsel to reduce attorney fee costs. Some of these firms and consultants are friends and business associates of the Trustees.
My next few blog posts are an answer to an earlier question that asked how can the CUSD Board save tax payer money to make up for deficits and still pay our incredidble CUSD teachers competitive wages in Orange County.
Ill start with where the CUSD Board has misappropriated taxpayer resources. Knowledge IS POWER Political pressure by the citizens of South Orange County can force the CUSD BOARD to discontinue their out of control spending.
Hey teachers, what is your answer for the current deficit that the district has if you don't want permanent pay cuts? What is the answer to dealing with the deficit? If it is not successfully addressed the students of the district will still suffer. I seem to never hear you teachers give a solution to the deficit. All I hear is that you don't want the permanent paycut.
Please do not forget to sign the petition also! It is important to have board members Meddox and Winsten recalled as soon as possible in order to move these issues in the right direction!
Ask your teachers about the petition if you have not yet signed it!
It is outrageous that this board could be so blatantly intransigent and blind in order to allow this to happen. Teachers do incredible things with kids in the classrooms day in and day out. They must remunerated accordingly. Do these members of the board collectively represent and voice the will of the community? I doubt that they even know what they are standing for. Are they able to realize the long lasting repercussions of having a taken such action? SHAME ON THEM. I say RECALL.

Well said Teachers!!!! You have the community support!!! The Board of Trustees will lose by a landslide in November. CUSD has the best teachers in the State!
Well done! This says it all....do we value our education? Do we VALUE what we have enjoyed in the past decade of high scores, and the best teachers in southern Callif....We are being told we are not worth it...we are loosing the best...
Great teachers deserve our support. Did you know that some of the board members don't even send their children to the schools in our district! They attend one of the charter schools. That is dispicable!
It is too bad that so many of these teachers are so misled by the union...
The union and district were negotiating all the way through October before the fact finder was called in... The board asked for 10% in June 2009... and the union said 'Status Quo on Health and Welfare, wages and work days"... The FF said 10.32%. The board was correct.
I have to ask, since they already accepted the cuts, why are they now saying that they can't afford the cuts.
Several of the teachers in this video taught my children and it makes me sick that it has come to this. These are great teachers and most of all they are people who deserve the respect of fair bargaining.
Don't be surprised, this isn't the first or last thing that the District will do to make everyone mad.
