I must say to this day I am still scared to death of Owls. Since I was a kid I've been scared. I don't know why. I mean Alice is a beautiful owl and all but I would still be scared to even be near one. I wonder if there is anyone else like me. I do like the video because Alice seems like a nice owl.
@Rubarty Yes, there are other people who are afraid of owls. Most of them have a story from childhood...a situation that really frightened them...that is the root of their fear.
@karlakinstler I thought i was the only one afraid of owls! I used to have nightmares when i was younger being lost in a pitch-dark forest being attacked by owls.
@Rubarty maybe that's not such a bad thing, I saw an owl in the wild for the first time about a month ago and it clawed me on the head out of nowhere when I went to walk away. It made no sound whatsoever, very startling, and gave me a bunch of cuts. Felt like someone wacking my head with a sticker-bush
@MJTOOR Alice is just a tamed owl, so yes, she still tries to bite me if I try to pet her. If an owl is raised from a very, very young age with lots of handling, then they will tolerate or may even enjoy cuddling. You can see owls like this most often in countries where anyone can buy them from a breeder.
@karlakinstler thanks for your response. basically i am about to buy an baby owl from a breeder, i am also considering to take falconry courses before i buy one.
@MJTOOR I assume you live in England? I would highly recommend you take falconry courses before you buy a baby owl from a breeder if you're not already very familiar with their care and training. There's a lot to know to care for the owlet properly.
@shugabuns I'm not exactly sure how tall Alice is...probably close to two feet from the tip of her tail to the top of her head. Females are larger than males, and Alice is a LARGE female.
@maxbps8 To "owl proof" our home we tried to get rid of most shreddable and breakable items, put down lots of carpet protectors, and we clean up a lot of owl poop.
@SayHiToTheBadGuy No, Alice is not a "pet"...she is held under state and federal permits to be used as an educational bird at the Houston Nature Center. The Center is too small to have staff 7 days a week, so she lives at home with me. She was injured when she was only three weeks old and thus grew up thinking she's human...and therefore wants human attention, but only in ways that comply with her owl instincts (so no petting and cuddling like a pet.)
@SayHiToTheBadGuy pet entitles domestication, Alice is human inprinted, meaning she'll respond to humans not so much as a threat so much as another member, but does not respond so well to "human" forms of affection; hugs, cuddles, ect, which you're likely to recieve a mean nip from that beak for.
@sarahscareAH Alice fell out of her nest when she was 3 weeks old and she severely dislocated her left elbow and damaged the end of her humerus. Because of her injury she will never be able to fly, so she has to work for a living as an education bird.
@karlakinstler what do you mean she has to work for a living? if she could say no to educating, would u have to stop 'maintaining' her? whats an education bird anyways? and how is it to have a pet owl, what do u feed her on? do owls feel affection as cats and dogs and some parakeets? or are they soulless like snakes and lizards? sorry for all the questions, i had never seen such a thing......
@omgtkseth She has to work for a living because a bird that can't live in the wild that isn't used as an education bird, foster parent, or in research or breeding has to be put to sleep. An education bird is used in school programs or is on display at a nature center or other facility. Alice likes to eat gophers best, but rats and rabbits are good too. Owls aren't affectionate like dogs or cats, but they are more than reptiles...no cuddling or petting.
dude your awesome for posting this video! Beautiful Gods Creature!

I think they are the best bird there is as they are so spectacular to look at. I like eagles as well for the same reason. So beautiful and majestic

if you pet a trained owl , even then they get annoyed or bite ? ...
even if you raised them up from that way , i saw many owls like to get petting or cuddling ...

@karlakinstler owls are wild animals I don't think they should be pets. Unless if you are going to hogwarts, thats a different story.

@xRyxRyx There's astroturf on the railing to protect her feet from foot sores. She's wiping her bill on it.
