why dont more people play the ending on the d string? i think it sounds better going up high on the d rather than staying on the a, but this is one of the few recordings where the performer goes on the d string...
breathtaking. this piece of music, although used very frequently, is the perfect piece of music for a single female skater to skate her short program to.
He is very giving for a musician, most musicians are not very giving. I am a visual artist by trade and grew up practicing classic piano and writing musing on guitar.
I AM SO GLAD I LISTENED TO THE WHOLE THING. I was this close *holds thumb and forefinger up* to changing it because ive heard this song before..but the ending with the harp?!??! THAT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL. I can't believe my ears almost didn't hear that
he's like janine jansen: he plays the cello like few people can. it's excellent to see that there are people out there whom are willing to share their passion and talent with those around them
gorgeously well played...impeccable pedigree mind you...his Mum was a highly regarded piano teacher...his father Professor at Royal College of Music...his bro...The Andrew...(Lloyd Webber)
yes ... looks like a 3/4 or something ... I know the full size bass comes in different sizes also. Did you know the cello is the closest to the human vocal chords? I so love it!
im 13 i play this song i love it so much. this version is so much better than yo-yo ma's version because yo-yo ma drags it out soooooo long this one keeps it real, lively and moving ^_^
to each his own. Cello happens to be the slow paced instrument with a deeper register. Julian chooses to play at his pace but Yo Yo chooses to underscore his deep register by going slower. It is a style chosen by each artist that makes him unique. In singing, Neil Sedaka recorded "breaking up is hard to do" twice. The first time he sang it fast and the second time ( 10 yrs later) he went slower and gentler . Both times the recordings were a hit. Go figure.
I can play this song on the viola, the bass, the cello and the violin,i was part of the string ensemble way back in the junior high, high school, the cello stuck by me through college,i love the cello the best to this very day,the cello and i we fit the part perfectly. When i first begin playing,i couldn't even hold the bow properly,i misread the notes and often play out of tune,i recovered quickly though,i managed to fool the untrained ears, but never the ears of my instructors and the professionals.
snowdancr14. Pavlova was great in her time, but nowadays there's a lot of better ballerinas (and also legendary) Try watch maya Plisetskaya (60's) Or Makarova (70's) performing the "Dying swan" Or if you want to watch beauty on it's peak watch Lucia Lacarra dancing white swan Pas de deux.. Pavlova was great but dancer's technique and artistry have improved big time since then. (watch Lacarra you'll love her)
When I heard the man scream "YEAH" after the piece ended, I was like. How can he even be in the mood for that YEAH after hearing such a soothing tune?!!!
I agree that the screaming at the end was unusual, but I can understand why it was done. This performance was excellent. When I listen to music, I find myself thinking it would be better if only a little faster here or louder there, etc., but not this time. I wouldn't change a thing. I would even go so far as to say that, for me, it was perfect!
LOL Do they have mosh pits at classical recitals now? I think that screaming was a little out of place for this kind of music, let alone for this colossal piece.
I agree with you that too much glissandoing (if thats a word) up and down ruins a piece if its innapropriate to the style, I don't think it is in this piece though.
glissando or vibrato? is glissando another word for vibrato ? i've never heard that term and i was in an orchestra for 12 years. it's a neat word though ... 'glissando' ... rolls off the tongue ...
glissando is the thing where you slide your finger down the string. (or rather he does) We had to learn the word before we were allowed to do it back in grade school :P
Harp and cello playing the Swan, a marriage made in heaven.
My favorite version by far.
