I've stopped buying these DVDs because I don't feel that I learn much from them. I actually prefer books, with the exception of Todd Suchermans first DVD (haven't seen the second). But this looks really good, and he seems to have the right focus. Think I might buy this one.
I got the CD and have viewed only one and a half lessons. Already, I see that it is a FABULOUS teaching tool. I've been playing for 40 years and this DVD has already helped with my technique, skills, and speed (which have, unfortunately, have deteriorated a bit over the years). RUN, do not walk, to buy this video.
i ordered this dvd and the new ludwig p4 drum pad, im a 27 yr old marine corps vet and i feel like 13 yr old boy about to get his fingers wet for the 1st time. am i too excited??
Awesome work! Back in the day we did similar work on "pillows" then when we went to the snares for marching band it felt like steel balls bouncing off the heads!! most imortant is the 'work' thanks Mr. Igoe
I'm glad someone finally came out with a dvd that TEACHES you something. It makes me sick to see guys charge $50 for a dvd and they just show off their flashy licks and flashy kit. Everyone: get this dvd
I wonder if someone could give me an advice. Thanks in advance.
Should I stay on practicing one rudiment at a time and get very good with it BEFORE moving to the next? OR should I practice multiple rudiments concurrently?
does this DVD start from the beginning , i am a complete starter, does it go over technique and grips and stuff like that for the complete beginners ? thanks :)
@drumsallout loosens ur hands up...trust me, speed and technique just make everything so much easier, whether it be polyrhythms, hand independency, even approach. then all u need to focus on r ur feet. ; )
@hiphopsucks96 Yea I know I have been playing for 10 years, I actually have my own warm up technique , i do double strokes and doubles on my triplets for about 20 minutes, thats why I am wondering if this is worth it
@zzzzzushi traditional grip..look up it, it's really easy to get the positioning down..hard to master, I learned it sorta early, maybe a few months after learning matched. but u have a significantly different touch when u get it down, especially for jazz when u need alot of ghost notes. sorta awkward to improve on tho...u need completely different technique for that grip. It goes in ur left hand, too, so that makes it ten times worse. but it's a great grip, go learn it. u won't be disappointed!
Finally a DVD you can LEARN from. It's at a more than reasonable price, as well. I'm tired of seeing drum DVD's go for $50 and it's just the guy showing off his chops the entire time. Thank you, Tommy.
Just a FYI...............this is what happens when you have a good solid foundation in that ever hated, ever-compared-to high school band thing called drum corps.
I studied with Tommy for around a year before I had to go off to college. He is a class act who knows his stuff better than anyone else I know. He is by far the best teacher as well and I'm so glad that he's making a dvd of the warmup that he makes his students use :)
I'm going to get this CD. Very rare for me. I can tell by the intro this is the real deal. Thanks for demystifying the nonsense and getting the reality going again. Peace.
@JoeJacari .... I bought the Great Hands for a Lifetime DVD about four months ago ... my hands have never been better and I have not even scratched the surface yet .... this video is a MUST for anyone who wants to have more control , be more relaxed , and who want to constantly improve ... Tommy`s system is really easy , and he is a great teacher .... best of all , you see results almost instantly
@sweetfly66 have u tried any of these exercises for your feet. its hard but its interesting trying to apply these concepts to foot control. I struggle with it because i got hit by a car and blew out my left knee. but Im working on it now. its insane.
@AGExCORE .... thats great man ... i have not applied this stuff to my feet but I guess the basic concepts of relaxation and getting the most bang for your buck should be applied to feet as well as hands ..... good luck to you on your rehab and journey back
man , i love all the positive comments about Tommy`s Great Hands for a Lifetime DVD . I could not agree with you all any stronger .
For the past 2 years or os I have been stumbling around in the dark looking for that magical exercise or grip that would give me the hands I have always wanted . Then I found Tommy`s DVD . 5 months later my hands have never been better and I know I have only scratched the surface ... The GHFAL system is outstanding . Thank you Tommy ...thank you , thank you .
just downloaded this DVD from Hudson last night. holy crap the 10 or so minutes of the Introduction section is one of the best "first lesson" pep talks i have ever heard. cannot wait to dig into this. Tommy is SUPER inspiring & his teaching style is just insanely smart.
I studied with him this summer for a week along with Jojo mayer and Peter Eriskine, Dave Weckl, Thomas Lang... Anyways, We did these exercises in Tommy Igoe's class we did these for four hours.
It was great..
Hope you guys have fun this video is awsome, I brought too. Take care drummers.
This could be the end of all the technique issues I've had. I put in so much time and effort practising but get caught up with technique issues, damn! I'm buying this.
@alqxcute .... A good point you make . As drummers we seem to think there is some magical grip or technique that we can master that will turn us into the drummers we all want to be but its not like that . The reality is that you need a strong foundation in a system and then you need to work your ass off at it . Tommy gives us this solid foundation and the inspiration needed to energize our work effort .
I thinking about buying this dvd and i would love it if someone can answer my question. does he talk about technique and how to do, lets say, double stroke rolls and other simple strokes? thanks
@fireboi55 ... He absolutely does . In fact he has three exercises geared specifically to making your double strokes sound better .
Regarding your question about other simple strokes ... the answer is a definitive YES . Tommy covers rebounding , accents , doubles , ruffs , flams , parradiddles ... furthermore , the over all concept behind the system is this ... playing simple things at a very high level . I could not recomend this DVD any stronger .
Also if anyone lives in new york and would like to setup a group practice Im so in. I have a vid of my practice up its basic but its just to show my basics lol. check it out and leave feedback. Its a very honest vid I dont have my own room, I was playing in my living room, so u will see some hilarious things in it lol.
Yeah this DvD is incredible my single strokes went from nada to 220 in like 2 months. I dont get tired and and these techniques are suprisingly good for your double bass as well. try the simple patterns on here with double bass and u will feel amazing.
Incredible DVD! It's fun to have this "personal" conversation with Tommy and practice rudiments with him. This DVD combined with "Secret Weapons" by Jojo Mayer.... you don't need anything else to work on your technique! Great job, Tommy!!!
Probably one of the best DVD's of all time. Think about it - how many guys do this for you? 90 percent of drummers just show off their band and shiny kits the entire time for fifty plus dollars. Here, Tommy breaks down what you need to do in order to improve the core of your hands (nearly a lost art). Take advantage of this offer.
@Beauxdeauxfinglok Taking a copy of this one is highly recommended! Support Tommy Igoe for this gift, once again he did a great job! This DVD makes SENSE compared to most of this crappy stuff from other "musicians" where you see them 5 hours behind their kit, masturbating on their own skills.
@AGExCORE It's just the truth! ;) But it's getting better, during the last 2 years, there were many USEFUL releases. Benny Greb, Stanton Moore, Keith Carlock, Aaron Spears..... More drummers should start to share their practice methods and little "secrets" with the drumming-community! What are they afraid of? I don't think that too many people are talented enough to exceed those drumgods. ;)
It's all about fun and having a good time with other people. Competition ruins music!
This DVD does exactly what Tommy says. It quickly points to the area of your hand technique that needs improvement. I have been working on it for just a few days now and I have already noticed an improvement. The Lifetime rudiments immediately transfer to the drum set and start showing up in your playing by osomosis.
Tommy is no joke. His "groove essentials" dvd's and attitude on grip (all about options) are totally superb! His dvd's are not only "must have" but his attitude reflects flexibility over snobbery.
i saw tommy play at birdland a few months ago. i'd like to say, not only is he one of the most amazing, versatile drummers ever, but he is so so nice, modest, and just such a great guy. that's what makes him my favorite drummer. i'll support him always
very nice.....brings the drumline aspect of drumming which is EXTREMELY important. I thank my many years of drumline, playing snare drum for what it has done for my drumset abilities.
Picked this up this week. It's amazing badass. It'll be a while until I get to the Great Hands routine at the end, even the basic one, but it'll be worth it. Excellent training video if you have the patience and will to put the time in that's required. No one can make you better if you don't put the time and effort in, but few can guide you better than Mr. Igoe can. If you want to get better, buy this dvd. It comes with an ebook I printed out and put in a three ring binder...great deal!
I like Tommy Igoe and his approach to drumming. Even if you are like me who never charts or reads music and has adapted to playing strictly by ear, this is an excellent five star video for conditioning of the hands. I have always believed in accents, rolls and musical and emotional presentation in playing and feeling the music as you play. VERY GOOD! You dont have to be the fastest or the best to be the best you can be. Be yourself, and not try to be someone else. This video does it right!:)

I agree. I practice to Groove Essentials every day. I can't wait for this one to come out. I need something good for the Hands. He teaches in such a way that you really understand things.

Looks to be another GREAT dvd. To me, Tommy would be the ultimate teacher - totally grounded, totally sincere, totally approachable.
