I have never ever heard this song. Nor have ANY of my friends in Russia i asked about. Sorry but it's too much calling this song folk :D sorry but not knowing prison songs doen't make me less Russian.
cool song, but from Odessa? Odessa must have changed a lot, and not just since I left in the 70's , but its history is being rewritten for a hundred years back. Since when is a peasant Russian/Ukrainian prison song with balalaikas is somehow a folk song from Odessa? People like this used to sell pickles from giant barrels at the Privoz on Sundays when I was living there. Now they have taken over and beautiful Odessa is now being rewritten as some Ukrainian barnyard.
They still do sell pickles from giant barrels. We bought some today! Delicious. Privoz continues to be dominated by "country folk" selling their fresh produce.
You are absolutely correct. Unfortunately, another generation, and uniqueness of our Odessa will be gone. I just hope there will be enough of it left in about 5 years, when I hope to take my kids there.
Well, this is obviously a guitar bard song and they do play it as such. They are only using the balalaika for bass, and only because that's what they have at the moment (it looks to me like this group does both bard and folk songs).
This is truly a great folk song, could you post the words so I can sing, I am learning Russian will be appreciated. What is the name of the guitar-like instrument! :))

Sorry, but is it a FOLK song? It is a PRISON song, this genre is called "tiuremnyi shanson"
:-)

I agree, but nobody knows the author, and every Russian knows this song. In opinion that makes song to be called "folk song".
