  • Excellent movie, btw.

  • it s a nice scene,especially colors:)

  • m'agrada la respiració de Savall

  • i enjoyed this vid

  • Wonderfullllllll amazing....

  • c bizarre comment il tient sont archet...

  • What is this film called?

  • lovely song. bahahaha, props to the old guy on the right for not gaping at the musician like the two girls.

  • The only good scene in the film that I can readily recall. Swarm me if you will; but I felt the film was too heavily loaded with melodrama and much less with Music.

  • @dolofonos You have to read the book in order to truly understand the movie :) Because in the book, you don't have ANY music, so that's what makes this movie so special :)

  • Très beau film . Très grand Jean pierre Marielle ! Un grand acteur .

  • The entire world needs more music like this, written in intense scales, be it hip-hop, metal, rock, pop, you name it. MINOR scales rule the whole acoustic spectrum.

  • @DerAnstifter I would say in fact that thier is a dire need.

  • @TheMelanouille

    Vous avez #$%^@$*& raison !!!

    notURmonkey

    (en fait, bertrand_philip)

  • "you play music but you're not a musician"

  • @masaccio95 Thats for a lot of heavy metal guitarrists of today...

  • Jordi savall!!!

  • It's beautiful, but this is just a snippet.

The entire piece -- La Folies d'Espagne -- is about eighteen minutes long. The matchless Jordi Savall, Ton Koopman, Christopher Coin, and Hopkinson Smith have recently recorded it and other wonders as Marais Pieces de Viole (Book Two) on Savall's Alia Vox label.

  • Pure extrait d'émotion, mes condoléances a Gérard D c'est trop fort

  • fantàstic Jordi Savall

  • Each shot in this film is a masterpiece.

  • with this sound I almost physically can feel the bow tearing my heart

  • Arguably the best piece of viola di gamba one can hear. Jordi Savall is a true master and the equal of Marin Marais and St Colombe

  • RIP My favorite director Alain Corneau

  • The coolest of this extract is that the bow and hand movements actually resembles the real performance (Guillaume didn't play gamba). Upstrokes for strong beats, for example, cool!

  • @cyllansse muxiisimas graciass ^^

  • Cool!

  • Whats really sad is, very few people know the greatest instrument of all.

  • @doddsalfa La viola.....oh, how i would love to learn. I have a cello....

  • @cellogirlable check out on Yt Couperin - Suite for Viola da Gamba in A Major - Mov. 4/4

  • Yes, great movies and great mucic. This young man was unlucky, poor little Guillaume. I hope he is in peace at heaven.

  • Yes, that young man died of a cold because of the gross inefficiencies of France's socialized medical system.

  • @chelseagurl97 waow that's so funny, first he died of a pneumonia + a Methicillin-resistant virus which is almost impossible to cure, and the french medical system is really amazing, you should watch "Sicko", compare to that, we're in heaven.

  • Gerard's son died? OMG! I didn't know that. What happened to him. That's terrible.

  • This is great!

  • that was so goddamned sexual, my cock hurt for him. the girl on the left knows what i'm talkin about. fffuuuuccck.

  • @godisanapple That ofcourse is what it is all about-fucking,not virtue and beauty of soul. Where are the legions of priest and confessors to drive simple perverts like you(motherfuckers) back into the darkness because you are ruining the arts?Maybe we do deserve an Islamic takeover.

  • What?! I didn't know his son had died,

  • real art :)

  • What I liked about this film, other than the soundtrack, is that it really brought out the esoteric and almost spiritual culture that surrounded instruments like the viol and the lute in 17th century France. Thanks for posting this.

  • Repose en paix.

  • QUE GATO!!!!

  • Unha pelicula moi boa. Maravillosa.

  • Excellent film! Magnifique!

  • Formidable

  • the look on the old man's face at 0:48 is sooo good! "wtf is that?" is what i get.

    such a beautiful song!

  • @pickleprincess01 his name Jean-Pierre Marielle, a great french actor

  • Looks like Sean Connery.

  • @pickleprincess01 No, I think he is just thinking Depardoo is a 'showoff, how dare he?'

  • what is that at i frist i thout it was an cello

  • it's a viola da gamba... kind of like a bowed guitar. played like a cello but tuned differently, has frets and more strings with a flat back and c holes as opposed to f-holes of the violin family

  • This isn't really an improvisation. It's actually a piece by Manuel Machado entitled "dos estrellas le siguen."

  • This is not by Manuel Machado. The movie is about Marin Marais, a french composer during the 17th and 18th century.

  • Is it just me or is the girl on the left breathing a bit heavily?

  • penjo, she's not the only one breathing heavily......!! ; )

  • i think its the poor camera quality

  • favourite piece, amasing film, amasing music!

  • It is so sad that Guillaume Depardieu died. I love this film very much.

  • Guillaume suffered all his life to be the son of one of the most famous actor of France, Gérard Depardieu, you can't challenge a 'legend'... 'Son of' sometimes can be an handicap for fragile people...

  • @lichtbroeder I'd swear Gerard Depardieu is still alive...

  • He is ... it's his son who died.

  • @MoaiMaea ah ok! :-P

  • 1 minute, cet extrait, 1 minute.....

  • great!

  • .Exelente !

  • is this a scene from a movie or something?

  • yes, from "Tous les matins du monde"

  • Oh my bad, it says at he top and in the info thing. I had no idea what that meant or said lol, thanks though

  • What's great about this improvisation is that he actually imitates the gamba or viol technique in a very disrepectful and vulgar way so much so that it enrages the master to the extent that he smashes his instrument!! It is a good piece of acting in that regard. People often misunderstand that the technique that he show here is stylisitically correct and its not. Remember Jorge Savell is playing not Depardieu's son.

  • I don't know why you have two thumbs down, but you're exactly correct. Sainte-Colombe becomes angry because he feels that there is no "soul" in Marin Marais' playing, and he is about to leave before his daughters convince him to teach Marin Marais.

  • COrrection... viol de gamba

  • COrrection... viola da gamba

  • It is both.

It's like you can call a cello and violin cello.

  • what's the movie name???

  • "Tous les matins du monde" is the title, with Depardieu's son!

  • that guy's cute.

  • Dead last month. RIP Guillaume.

  • Depardieu fils was the only one in the movie that made any attempt to provide a realistic-looking bowing and fingering.

  • i've read somewhere that he really actually plays the viol ... whilst the rest of the cast were ... acting which is their job...ahahaha :-)

  • No he didn't play viol (he is dead). Here he was playing a too young man proud of his technic.- which is explained in the movie but cut here in the vid.

  • well he used to play the viol until he died...

in the movie he played a man who had "good technique but no musicien"

  • 1 - "He" has a name : Guillaume Depardieu who did not play the viol.

2 - The "man" he plays has also a name : "Marin Marais" which some think he was a musician - not only a good technician.

The young Marin Marais who tries to impress Sainte Colombe (another music composer) - with an emphasis technic, which upsets Sainte Colombe who reject him.

  • yes ur right ... i researched it. :-)

He studied cello when he was young... so i think adapting the gamba's fingerboard and fingerings is not that difficult.... for the movie ... :-)

  • Apparently it's a Gamba de viola. Perhaps, I could find one.

  • is a basso di viola - Viola da Gamba bass

  • What kind of instrument is that? It can't be a cello can it?

  • That guy, Guillaume DEPARDIEU (the musician), died two months ago ... Sad.

  • ¡olé!

  • great Movie! great song;-)

  • to solo kai o ektelestis tou me erethizoun tamala!!!

  • Did he learn how to play? It looks very real, the bow strokes, where and when the fingers touch the finger-board, the timing!

  • He learned to play to give credibility to the scenes but actually is Jordi Savall who is playing this piece is on the soundtrack

sadly Guillaume Depardieu died on october because a fulminant pneumonia he was 37 years old

  • Ah one of my favorite parts of Tous Les Matins du Monde.

  • On the viol it takes on a new dimension and the period costume give an authentic setting. Good on you.

  • A.Corelli/La Folia... it's wonderfull...

  • This piece of music always makes me shiver so the sound of the Gamba is warm and pretty <3 one of my fave movie where Guillaume appears ;-;

  • RIP Guillaume...

  • bravo! rest in peace.

  • Magnifique!!! Superbe!!

  • ∞

。。Bouleversant

  • RIP Guillaume.

  • In memoriam..

  • This is the movie that introduced me to him and its beautiful soundtrack.

    May you rest in peace.

  • qe ssexy!

  • WOW!! that was beautiful and very intense. I have to buy this music.

  • the composer of this music is jean baptiste lully

  • if you go to the amazon webpage, you can see the list of musics from this soundtrack and confirm that this track is composed by Marin Marais. I think it's a reliable source.

  • Marais also wrote variations on La Folia... this is just an excerpt of that. :>

  • Does anyone know who's the composer of this masterpiece?

  • Marin Marais

  • Thanks a lot! ;)

  • sorry, but the composer is not marin marais at all (he is the caracter playing the viole de gambe) the composer is arcangelo corelli this piece is quite famous (follia) and it comes strait from middle age music. you can hear there is a huge difference between french and italian music at this time

  • in the movie, the young and brilliant marin marais makes an audition to sainte colombe and plays the folia, but sainte colombe thinks that he is too bad to be his student. if you're nterrested by folia it was invented between portugal-spain

  • I wouldn't say that even Corelli is the composer of la folia, it's been around before him... from the renaissance or even medieval times like you said. Although Corelli did compose one of the most famous folia's.

  • folia is a musical form, many composers wrote some, j. c. bach (son) wrote a beautifull one. but this specific one is composed by corelly i'm more than shure
