The only good scene in the film that I can readily recall. Swarm me if you will; but I felt the film was too heavily loaded with melodrama and much less with Music.
@dolofonos You have to read the book in order to truly understand the movie :) Because in the book, you don't have ANY music, so that's what makes this movie so special :)
The entire world needs more music like this, written in intense scales, be it hip-hop, metal, rock, pop, you name it. MINOR scales rule the whole acoustic spectrum.
The entire piece -- La Folies d'Espagne -- is about eighteen minutes long. The matchless Jordi Savall, Ton Koopman, Christopher Coin, and Hopkinson Smith have recently recorded it and other wonders as Marais Pieces de Viole (Book Two) on Savall's Alia Vox label.
The coolest of this extract is that the bow and hand movements actually resembles the real performance (Guillaume didn't play gamba). Upstrokes for strong beats, for example, cool!
@chelseagurl97 waow that's so funny, first he died of a pneumonia + a Methicillin-resistant virus which is almost impossible to cure, and the french medical system is really amazing, you should watch "Sicko", compare to that, we're in heaven.
@godisanapple That ofcourse is what it is all about-fucking,not virtue and beauty of soul. Where are the legions of priest and confessors to drive simple perverts like you(motherfuckers) back into the darkness because you are ruining the arts?Maybe we do deserve an Islamic takeover.
What I liked about this film, other than the soundtrack, is that it really brought out the esoteric and almost spiritual culture that surrounded instruments like the viol and the lute in 17th century France. Thanks for posting this.
it's a viola da gamba... kind of like a bowed guitar. played like a cello but tuned differently, has frets and more strings with a flat back and c holes as opposed to f-holes of the violin family
Guillaume suffered all his life to be the son of one of the most famous actor of France, Gérard Depardieu, you can't challenge a 'legend'... 'Son of' sometimes can be an handicap for fragile people...
1 minute, cet extrait, 1 minute.....
What's great about this improvisation is that he actually imitates the gamba or viol technique in a very disrepectful and vulgar way so much so that it enrages the master to the extent that he smashes his instrument!! It is a good piece of acting in that regard. People often misunderstand that the technique that he show here is stylisitically correct and its not. Remember Jorge Savell is playing not Depardieu's son.
I don't know why you have two thumbs down, but you're exactly correct. Sainte-Colombe becomes angry because he feels that there is no "soul" in Marin Marais' playing, and he is about to leave before his daughters convince him to teach Marin Marais.
No he didn't play viol (he is dead). Here he was playing a too young man proud of his technic.- which is explained in the movie but cut here in the vid.
1 - "He" has a name : Guillaume Depardieu who did not play the viol.
2 - The "man" he plays has also a name : "Marin Marais" which some think he was a musician - not only a good technician.
The young Marin Marais who tries to impress Sainte Colombe (another music composer) - with an emphasis technic, which upsets Sainte Colombe who reject him.
