these are the tunes that matter when u talk about U2,like i will follow, celebration, party girl, gloria, what started people following em ,still a great sound, better than alot of there new stuff, buts thats just my opinion.
U2 were obviously influenced by Joy Division and having Hannett around made things even more obvious. One of the criticisms of the band is that they sound too much like their influences, followers rather than leaders, and this is a classic example, yet it is a very good track! Had Hannett kept his act together, U2 would of made much better records in the early 1980's, but they wouldn't of sold as many. So you pay your money and you takes your choice...
@djh29971 what can you expect - they were just turning 20 at the time. and the punk and post punk formula was pretty simple, so they merely went along with it at the beginning. but they knew they needed to grow out of it and did, starting with "War". Listen to Altered Images - "I Could Be Happy" could easily be an early U2 song.
This is live at Leixlip Castle, July 1980, not 1981 as it says on the video. And, among some U2 collectors, the live audio is available, I used to have it. It's a little rough.
There seem to be many people around who don't know, that the first three U2 albums have been reissued last year as "special-de-luxe-editions", which all three contain a bonus CD each. On these bonus CDs you'll find all the early rarities: the "Another Day" single, the "U2 3" single, "11 o'clock..." plus b-side "Touch", "A Celebration" and many more...
Let me explain: for six seconds, the track is live, then all of a sudden it goes into the studio version.. also, look at the Edge's hand as he 'suppose' to be strumming that riff.. see anything wrong?
I the video is live however the song is a studio release. This is why I called it a fake. This is not the actually soundtrack to the live performance.
If I remember correctly, this is an official promotoinal video, albeit poorly conceived. The same was done for A Day Without Me, I think. Just a quick, cheap promotional video.
wow, my father was at this show. this may sound like shite but im distantly related to bono, from his mothers side, rankin clan, when my father and mum were dating he met bono in 1981 even, we have an old autographed photo of the band. u2 is my favorite band!+im only 14...
This was 27th July 1980, not 1981. I remember the gig! U2 were supporting The Police, along with John Otway, Moondogs, Skafish, The Q-Tips and Squeeze.
You remember the gig? Skafish didn't even play that day. If you could tell us what mad antic John Otway did on stage involving a curtain, then I'd believe ya!
The jacket Bono is wearing is the same jacket you see him wearing in Chicago street photos of the band back in April of 1981. Yeah, I'm U2 nerd...can you tell?
ah, i wish we could hear the live part of this vid ... that was hilarious, the intro was live, then the studio recording starts, both in different tuning lol

como se nota el sonido Martin Hannett y la influencia de joy Division. Aún se podía soportar la voz de Bono, alias el grajo.

It was huge, or at least huge among the U2 fans, in Ireland in the early '80's.

Radio in America should play this early
stuff from U2. It's raw but the guitar riffs, which later became the signature sound of the band are incredible.

No, the studio version is the best one. It's sad Martin Hannett didn't produced more of their singles-albums.
