If someone sticks out an elbow or a knee, then they are usually intending to hurt their opponent! Sometimes there are collisions where a player DOESN'T stick out his elbow or knee, and somebody still get's hurt. This is one of those cases!

What exaccerbated the incident was the fact that Cooke had a reputation for being dirty. It was a blind side hit, which was legal at the time. The difference with the Cooke hit is that Matt has a history of dirty play. McLaren didn't.
The Cooke hit was very much the same as what Daniel Paille of the Bruins got suspended for earlier this year.
