Stephen Lawrence "Steve" Winwood (born 12 May 1948) is an English songwriter and musician whose genres include blue-eyed soul, R&B, rock, blues-rock, pop-rock, and jazz. A multi-instrumentalist, he plays the electric organ, synthesizers, bass, drums, guitar, mandolin, violin and other strings. A star performer for nearly fifty years, he has also done notable work as a producer
I'm not the best dancer in the world, but this never fails to have me up and boogeying by the time it's nearing the end...great throwback to the 60's soul sound and one of the best songs of the 80's.
You did a great job by putting this song onto YouTube, elltell1990. I am giving this song a mild "Two Thumbs Up!" because it is the greatest song of all-time.
As much as I like Steve this regrettably is a complete steal from. Hell, he just renamed it Roll with it instead of Roadrunner...But don´t just take my word for it, listen to the original and judge for yourself´s; JR Walker´s (i´m a) Roadrunner.
And now for those of you that aren't that familiar with Steve Winwood ... Check out this one from wayyyy back in 1972 of him performing Low Spark of High Heeled Boys with the band Traffic. watch?v=R8M8R835Ck4
I totally agree with fortunate 1950 below. In my mind Steve Winwood is indeed one of the All Time Top Talents. How lucky we were to be young in a time when his songs were on the radio and served as a backdrop to our lives and loves. Wonderful to be able to watch him on YouTube, including his amazing 16 year old venture into the world of rock music.
Hard to believe that one person actually dislikes this song. This totally amazes me because Steve Winwood is one of the All Time Top Talents. Few can match the beauty and greatness of his music. He is definitely above some of the musical morons running around this planet who have been starving us of real music. Electronic chaos is NOT real music anyway.
Waht can I say..... his voice its pure SOUL.........I love this song and I love Steve Winwood.Thank God to give us such a talent!!!!! Tank you elltell1990 for posting
Do you know what sucks? When you have the 45...and your record player decides to practically blow up in the first minute of this song. I almost chucked it out the window. So unfair...hence why I'm here. But now I can jam out as much as I want! :D
Thank you elltell1990 for posting the longer version of this song. To miss out on the bitchin sax solo and Steve's continued organ solo at the end, it just doesn't do justice to cut a song like this short. That instrumental at the end could go on for another 15 minutes and I'd STILL think it was too short. His music is just fantastic and timeless!!
This man definitely is a blue eyed soul brother. I'm with BloozeDaddy. I distinctively hear a Sam & Dave nuance in this tune. Yes, I agree. This style has a definite connection to the Memphis Sound, which I would like to see make a come back. Steve Winwood has always been on the top of my list from his beginnings. Love to see him get together with Clapton.
This is the best vocal performance I've ever heard out of Winwood...he always sounded so strained in Blind Faith. His voice certainly got better with age. He sounds so purely R&B here you would never guess it is a white dude from England!
You can tell that this man was inspired by R&B music.....take a lesson from this.....If it wasn't for R&B there would be no Rock N Roll! Whether you like it or whether you don't like it--learn to love it! IT IS WAS IT IS!!!!!.......ROLL ON STEVE, ROLL ON!
@tljones9 Well, Rock N' Roll was technically made back in the '50s by Elvis. So, if anything, R&B wouldn't be here if Rock N' Roll hadn't came along years earlier.
@B0SSNINE there you are wrong.......the first R&B hit was in 1947 with artists like Louis Jordan, Sticks McGee. the first rock n roll records (arguably) was in 1951 with "Rocket 88" by Jackie Brenston, and before the King, "Rock Around The Clock" by Bill Haley & The Comets in 1954. Elvis didn't have a hit record until 1955. Check the history books!.....like I said before, if it wasn't for R&B, THERE WOULD BE NO ROCK N' ROLL!
@tljones9 I checked Louis Jordan out, and it doesn't sound like R&B to me (sounds like Jazz with a bit of Swing). And honestly, I never knew that Elvis was credited with bringing RnR mainstream until I DID check the history books. I guess its all opinion, eh? Well, except the RnR thing (which is in history books). So, its me and the history books vs you. Most people will probably side with the history books (and therefore me).
@B0SSNINE I'm sure Ahmet Ertegun (who started Atlantic Records) The Bahiri Brothers (who started Modern Records) would definitely disagree with you....and especially Joel Whitburn (who heads Record Research) would definitely disagree with you as to which came first....they would tell you that R&B came FIRST (especially Ahmet Ertegun---considering he released some of the first R&B records-----in 1947!!!!!
@tljones9 Well, after my grandfather died, my grandmother got into another relationship. He was born in the mid-20's, and made music under a record deal (he wasn't too successful until country music became popular in the '70s) in the late '50s. I asked him which he though came first, and he agreed with me and said, quote on quote, "that guy is just pulling stuff out of his ass" about you. So, eh.
@tljones9 there's no argument that country music was around before both R&B and Rock N Roll, however that not the point......my degree is in music....studied it all, classical, jazz, country, gospel as well.....R&B is a combination of jazz, country and gospel music, but when they fused it with pop music back in the early '50s, it became Rock N Roll.....so, with all due respect, the man that married your grandmother needs to listen to more than just country music and read up on music history!
This guy has more friggin talent than anybody recording top 40 crap today. He can write the music, the words, and play a few instruments. You can't spell crap without rap.
The movie this was in featuring dabney Coleman was good. The scene this song featured in was hot.

memsat2001 3 months ago
I'll refer to it as a 'Sam Cooke moment'.
When you realise that a bunch of your favourite songs were generally done by a certain performer.
I just had such a moment whilst listening to the car radio here in Japan when they did a Steve Winwood encapsulation.
Shit. All those songs. I love them. And that's Steve Winwood/Spencer Davis Group.
Prokofiev is another example.
It makes buying CDs cheaper when you only need to buy three 'best of's for all that.
