Political/private-commercial/environmental, and Luddite types of fear and paranoia, fomented by those above-mentioned factions, have, so far, prevented the American people from developing our own High-Ppeed Rail and MagLev systems, to our great economic/cultural benefit — on the contrary, our great can-do, optimistic, science-driver, future-oriented attitude has been deliberately eroded, from within, far more damage than done by any external enemies.

As a Japanese, I feel totally humiliated and inadequate that we are getting further behind. Our record is far below 574 km/h and only stands at 443 km/h. I very much doubt that our railway companies will do anything about this ongoing defeat.
574.7 according to the announcer at the end. Imagine what kind of political resistance the airlines would put up if anyone talked about putting this kind of thing into the US (say eastern seabord Boston<>Philly) or canada (detroit/windsor<>montreal).
20 times less fuel consumption of the same speed as an airplane (according to the announcers around 3min)
Absolutely fantastic!! I love the TGVs. It's wonderful, that the French are so passionate about the incredibly famous TGV. I am personally so delighted that they achieved such an incredible record with conventional train.
