Hogan had special "5° open clubs"? You're kidding, right? A forged club's address lie-angle can be adjusted steep or flat, you can also order clubs with higher or lower face-angles. "Open" or "closed" is a different animal. Apart from moving weight toward the hosel or toe of the clubhead, whether a club will be open or closed at impact is purely a function of how you grip and swing that club. There's no such thing as a special, magical "pre-opened" club.
@telescope3 Hogan used ribbed grips (a rib placed inside the grip running down the back side). He had the grip rib set so the face was 5 degrees open. It was merely a compensation he built in for his aggressive turn through the ball. Back when Nick Faldo visited Hogan in FW he pulled one of Hogan's clubs out of the bag and set it down. "How the hell can he play with these?" was all he could say. It is all about impact position.
It was my understanding that Hogan shaved the heel to the middle of the club, so when it layed on the ground, it was 5 degrees open. The reminder rib was to insure he took a "weak" grip with the club. What I wouldn't give to visit Shady Oaks to see Hogan's actual clubs.
@telescope3 you can bend clubs open, it can be done best using two bending bars. Also Hogan's clubs Driver through wedges were all set at a lie angle of 57* (personally held a set of his irons and it was different). the more flat a club is set, the more open it will lie. The lie angle concept came from Abe Mitchell who is the statue on the Ryder Cup trophy
HOw do you feel Hogans teaching may or may not be as helpful, to everyday golfers, knowing he had clubs that were 5 degrees open.I know 5 degrees open would affect how I swing the club.I would probably prefer irons designed like that but I would not rotate my hands unless the clubs were that open.
Is that the only quote anyone remembers from that book? People have taken that one quote and ran with it. Way more to the book than just that.

Definately had open clubs. Bent open. Not sure how much. But he also grinded down the heel so it wouldn't catch.

Where did you come up with the 57* thing?
Has anyone confirmed Hogan's clubs were like this?
